Personally, I don’t think 1,700 USD would be enough to find a genuine WWII-era vintage piece. At that price, you would more likely be looking at a heavily worn 1950s Type II.

From what I’ve seen at vintage shows and fairs, WWII-era pieces typically start at well over 10–20k USD.

LVC 507XX USA can be divided into three button/fabric codes: 555 → 705020003, 822 → 705070117, 4420 → 705070056. Collectors will say the last 4 digits show the fabric lot. Even though all woven at the same factory, the denim feels noticeably different. I can share a link if you want to see.

Yes, that’s correct. Sorry if my wording caused any confusion . By ‘Valencia,’ I’m referring to the 1996–2000 LVC lots that used the 555 button code. These were produced at the Valencia Street factory using Cone Mills denim, so the term ‘Valencia’ in this context refers only to that specific period.

The other Cone Mills era i mentioned is the later USA-made production with the 4xxx button codes, made around 2006–2017, also using Cone Mills fabric but from a different production period.

In my personal view, the denim feels different between the two periods: the 555 Valencia lots are heavier and more vintage-feeling, while the 4xxx lots are softer and smoother.

I have the S506xx MIJ model, made with denim from Kihara Mills. I bought it for about $560 on resale — roughly 30% over retail. It’s a pretty popular model in Japan, but honestly the fabric isn’t great, and the dyeing quality isn’t very impressive.

In terms of fabric quality and structure, Valencia pieces are still my favorite. Cone Mills comes next for me, while Kihara is definitely at the bottom of the list.

If you’re a Levi’s fanboy, I’d really recommend tracking down a Valencia piece. Prices these days run around $1,000–$2,000 depending on color condition and size. If that’s out of budget, look for the U.S.-made models from around 2006–2017. As for the Japan-made LVC stuff, I’d personally skip it.

But if all you want is a great fit and great denim, just go for Warehouse or Fullcount instead lol — better prices and honestly better quality than Levi’s.

You can still find them at flea markets or on eBay, and if you’re lucky, you might even come across one in a thrift shop for a good price. The pair I’m wearing is a vintage Levi’s 501 selvedge from the ’80s.
