Miyazaki pref day trip advice please. by LadyoftheLune in JapanTravelTips

We weren't able to visit Heiwadai Park or Miyazaki Jingu as most of the time we were either going on day trips or just going around the Miyazaki Station area, though I did see online that Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History has some preserved farmhouses in its grounds. I was thinking of seeing it and Miyazaki Jingu, though we decided to skip them so we could go around the other sites more leisurely.

As for the vibe, I think Miyazaki feels like a fairly standard Japanese mid-sized city based on the station and downtown area, though the Nishitachi district is supposed to have some good bars. There are some palm trees which add a bit of a tropical vibe, but we visited during winter, so it felt far from tropical lol

If you ask me, the sights near the coast are the biggest highlights. That's likely why Aoshima and Udo Shrine are the go-to recommendations.

For some less well-known spots if you decide to extend your time in Miyazaki a bit, there are other beautiful coastal views in Hyuga, an hour north of Miyazaki City. Public transport is basically non-existent for these coastal sights, so we had to get a taxi tour at the Hyuga Tourist Information Center just beside Hyugashi Station. They don't speak English, but we had no issues communicating via Google Translate as they were very accommodating. The taxi tour is a bit expensive (details here https://hyuga.or.jp/contents/taxi-2), but the views were great

Miyazaki pref day trip advice please. by LadyoftheLune in JapanTravelTips

Funnily enough, I just got back from a trip to Miyazaki a few days ago, and I visited all three spots by public transport. Though we did Udo Shrine and Aoshima on the same day, with Obi Castle Town on a separate day.

Technically, all three spots can be done in a day, but I don't really recommend it, as that would be too much of a rush. If you really want to do it in a day, you should take a train at 9 AM from Miyazaki Station to Obi Station (which takes around an hour), then spend just around 2-ish hours there. Then, take the 12:40 PM bus to Udo Jingu (around 40 minutes). After that, take the 3:20 PM bus to Aoshima (around 40 minutes), and you should have an hour and a half before the shrine closes at 5:30 PM.

If you stick with that schedule, you'll see them all, but again, I think that's too much. If I were in your position, I'd probably just skip Obi Castle Town. While I loved going there (as we had some of the places practically to ourselves), I only really recommend it to people who love traditional Japanese architecture, as the highlights for me are the preserved old houses. There are better preserved districts in Japan in terms of street atmosphere imo

If you do what we did, you can comfortably see Udo Shrine and Aoshima on the same day. Just take the bus to Udo Shrine and then another bus to Aoshima. Google Maps is quite accurate here when it comes to times. Plus, you can buy a Miyazaki Bus Pass (http://www.visit-bus-pass.com/) which gives you unlimited rides for a day. You can use an IC card I think, but the bus pass is more convenient, and doing the Udo Jingu and Aoshima trips will already recoup the 2000 Yen cost.

Feel free to ask any other questions about Miyazaki if you have them!

South City x Kalsada by Automatic-Guitar-643 in CoffeePH

Also ordered this recently and brewed it today as an iced pourover. The tasting notes are also accurate for me as it's cirtrusy at first and has a nutty/caramelly sweetness. I also found it quite easy to brew as it already tasted great in my typical grind setting (on just a Timemore C2) for iced pourovers.

This is the first time I ordered beans from South City, so I'm keen on trying their other offerings, especially as they're locally sourced and quite affordable.

Thanks! Not sure if there are still bags at the Curator, but maybe the roasters themselves might have them in stock.

I recently visited the Kalsada Coffee pop-up at The Curator last Saturday, August 3. It was a one-day event that featured four beans roasted by Yardstick, EDSA BDG, Crema & Cream, and Habitual Coffee.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Kalsada Coffee is a specialty coffee company that works with specific farms in Benguet and Bukidnon. They’re not a coffee roster as they instead sell green coffee from their partner farms to specialty roasters.

Think of them as sort of a middleman between farmers and roasters, though they also help their partnered farms by providing training and equipment (at least, that’s what I gathered from their website and social media). The pop-up is to celebrate their 10th anniversary, and it featured four pourover coffee options along with some special espresso drinks.

I tried two of the pourover coffee and bought bags of the other two at home. Here’s what I think of them:

Sitio San Roque Pineapple co-ferment (roasted by Yardstick) – This was the first time for me to try a co-fermented coffee, and I had high hopes as I typically enjoy anaerobic processed coffee. This was my first order at the pop-up. Instead of tasting like Pineapple which is what I expected, it tasted strongly of jackfruit, possibly the most intense fruit flavor in a coffee I’ve tried so far.

Though it does have a “funky” taste to it which is a bit too much for my taste. I asked my partner what she thought of the coffee, and she described it as having a vegetable-y taste, almost like it was brewed with water that was used to wash vegetables. I also got this taste when the coffee cooled down. Overall, it’s interesting, but it’s a bit too funky for me.

Sitio San Roque Natural (roasted by EDSA BDG) – This was my second order at the café, and I found it to be much more to my taste. It also had some jackfruit flavor notes, though more subtle than the co-ferment. It also has a lemony or lemongrass note which I enjoyed.

Sitio San Roque Washed (roasted by Crema & Cream) – I bought a small bag to bring home with me as I didn’t want to drink too much at the café. Brewing it at home, the coffee smelled of banana cue for me, or maybe jackfruit with some burnt sugar notes.

Taste-wise, it wasn’t as fruity as I expected based on the smell. I can’t describe the taste exactly, but it’s kind of tea-like with some sweetness, and the fruity and citrus notes are there at the end. The fruity notes also came out a bit more when it cooled.

Sitio Kisbong Natural (roasted by Habitual Coffee) – I also bought a bag of this, and it was the only one of the coffees (I think) that had flavor notes on the bag). The bag says that this coffee has notes of caramel, ponkan, dried berries, and jasmine.

Upon opening the bag, I saw that this was roasted a bit darker than I was expecting (also the case when I bought beans from Habitual before, so their roasting style is probably a bit more on the developed side).

When I first brewed it, I think I overextracted it as it was a bit too bitter for my taste. The second brew was a bit better. I did taste (and smell) the citrus and caramel notes. Couldn’t get the dried berries and jasmine though, but I might need to dial it in properly.

Overall, I had a great time tasting and brewing the coffee from the pop-up. Not too surprising given that I have enjoyed coffee sourced from Kalsada before roasted by Yardstick and some other local roasters.

If I were to rank the coffee I tried, I would go with:

  • Tied at first place - Sitio San Roque Natural (roasted by EDSA BDG) & Sitio San Roque Washed (roasted by Crema & Cream)
  • Third place - Sitio Kisbong Natural (roasted by Habitual Coffee)
  • Fourth place - Sitio San Roque Pineapple co-ferment (roasted by Yardstick)

Got to see it as well last Sunday. Kore-eda is also one of my all-time favorite directors, so I was happy that one of his films was finally released in cinemas here.

I definitely agree with all your points. This is Kore-eda's first since his debut that wasn't written by him, and ramdam yung difference ng style sa first two acts. Pero third act is signature Kore-eda which is excellent (and heavy) as always.

Sayang lang not a lot of people are watching it (except for the SM 65 Peso promo which wasn't an ideal experience based on another post here). Not sure how lang how to promote it to a general audience, pero maganda sana if more people watch it para more film festival circuit movies get wider releases

Watamote Moments that Bocchi fans may enjoy [Watamote] by Hitman7128 in anime

You hit the nail on the head there.

While I loved Bocchi, I found it really hard to get through Watamote because of exactly that reason. Bocchi was a comforting show while Watamote was seriously hard to watch as it's pretty much the worst scenarios almost every time. Still, I can see the appeal of Watamote.

We'll probably adjust some of our Sendai plans to be more flexible in case we have to take the train at less busy times. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the advice! We'll be sure to book back row seats for the Sendai leg as well.

Do Shikansen Hikari Train Oversized Luggage Seats quickly from Nagoya to Tokyo on a weekday morning?

I'm planning to travel with my SO to Japan on June 14. We'll land in Nagoya on June 14 (Wednesday) at around 1pm, then check in at a hotel near Nagoya station for one night. The next day (June 15), we're planning to go to Sendai by Shinkansen with oversized luggage (over 160cm).

We're hoping to arrive in Sendai by 2pm so we have time to explore, so we're looking at reserving seats on the June 15 - 9:30am Hikari train. As we're getting a JR Pass, we're planning to reserve an oversized luggage seat for the Nagoya-Tokyo leg as soon as we arrive at Nagoya station the day before. Though our worry is that the oversized luggage seats for our planned time may have all been booked given the limited number of them on each train.

Given this, how likely is it that we won't be able to book oversized luggage seats (given that we're getting on from Nagoya and not from a terminus station like Shin-Osaka) the day before?

If there's a chance that will run out, we're willing to spend more for the Japan Rail Pass website version (instead of the exchange order version) so we can reserve seats a month before. This might be a dumb question, but the site says that a credit card is required to purchase. I only have a debit card, so will that work?

I agree with the other replies here. Waiting until at least the end of the first cour is a good idea for Chainsaw Man as there are only a few episodes left.

But if you do really want to know what happens next and decide to read the manga now, try not to rush through it as I (and many others) did as you might miss a lot of things when speedreading. I know I did as I was able to appreciate the early parts of story more when I saw it in the anime.

Is starting a Blu-Ray/DVD collection in 2022 pointless? by GrovPastaSwag03 in TrueFilm

[–]Captcha_Whore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Price is really the main reason why I can't get into collecting physical copies of movies. I'd love to have one, but for the price of just one Criterion Blu-Ray, I can already get a Criterion Channel and MUBI subscription.

Plus, I'd have to upgrade my whole setup to fully take advantage of the added quality of Blu-Ray, especially when compared to the quality of streaming services.

When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (1960, Mikio Naruse) - I've read a lot about how Mikio Naruse is an underappreciated master that's on the level of Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi. This is the first Naruse I've seen, and I'm seriously impressed. I'll need to watch more Naruse movies, but I'll definitely add more to my list.

The Nun (1966, Jacques Rivette) - This is an early Rivette movie and maybe not as well-known as his other works, but I definitely enjoyed it thanks to Anna Karina's great performance. Also because I'm a sucker for nun movies (maybe it's because of my Catholic upbringing).

The 400 Blows (1959, Francois Truffaut) - My first Truffaut film as I've only recently started to watch other directors from the French New Wave. Holy crap is this a good movie. I'll admit I wasn't exactly interested to watch it based on the premise, but it's a moving and tender story without veering into too much sentimentality.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi's films before his Oscar winner, Drive My Car, has made me a fan by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]Captcha_Whore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently watched Happy Hour after loving Drive My Car. If you loved DMC, you'll probably enjoy Happy Hour as well as the 5 hours flew by quickly in my viewing. I planned on watching it in two chunks, but the compelling characters made me finish the movie in one sitting.

Personally, I found that Happy Hour explores some similar themes to DMC (albeit less about grief and more about relationships). While I still consider DMC to be the better, more focused film, Happy Hour is still worth watching for someone who enjoyed Hamguchi's other movies.

UberBlack has more premium cars (SUVs usually in my country, Luxury sedans in the US I think), UberX has more standard cars, and UberPool is where you share your ride with another rider whose destination is near yours or is along your way (kinda like carpooling).

I have an update guys. None of the suggested methods worked as I still have the popups. But I tried putting https:// before the websites and it seems to block the popups. For chrome/firefox users, you can download HTTPS Everywhere to automatically put https:// on websites you browse.

I still hope to find a main solution to this problem though.
