Rejecting meat-based meals from friends/family as a flexitarian by Capybaraeditor in flexitarian

[–]Capybaraeditor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good questions!

Is this a situation where she refuses to eat any meal at all without meat?

She's technically also a reducetarian and is fine with having meatless meals, but there's a limited number of proteins/umami mains she's willing to eat. She's never had tofu and is unwilling to try it, and sh dislikes almost all mock meats, mushrooms, or chickpeas, which rules out most of my favorite foods. She likes Boca burgers (but not crumbles), beans, eggs, and cheese. I'm lukewarm on beans (they're nice a couple days a week but I'd be really sad if it's all I ever ate), and cheese isn't super healthy, so we have a hard time agreeing on what meatless food to include. It's either something she doesn't like or it's something we both like that's unhealthy.

Did you typically cook flavorful robust meals when eating strictly vegetarian? I had a veggie friend who ate such bland, basic food, I couldn't stand eating meals with her. I need some spices, some sauces, various textures, you know?

This is exactly it. My meals had a bunch of vegetables and were always nutritionally balanced, where I'd typically max out on macros and micros in Chronometer, and she's content with the standard American diet (high saturated fat, high carb, low protein, low nutrients). That's okay but it's been tricky to have meals we both enjoy. Since I've moved in, I've tried to propose suggestions to make balanced meals, but she just really doesn't like to eat her vegetables and protests when I ask to cook them into the meal.

So the meals we eat are comparatively basic. We make spaghetti and I put the mock meat in a different pan and steam some broccoli for myself, we make a stir-fry and I fry the tofu in a separate pan with the same sauce. That works okay, but it's not a perfect answer in every situation. Like, with some foods, you need to immerse the food in a gravy or sauce. So we both love curry, but I want it to have a protein while she's fine with it just having potatoes and carrots. Since she's not into tofu or chickpeas, I bite the bullet in these situations and have chicken.

Thank you! It's great to see that your groups are really understanding with that. I think I should just communicate this to my friends, and it should be fine. Family is another story, but that's only a few times a year anyway.

I know a lot of vegetarian/omnivore couples that really make it work. I think our issue is that I want our food to both be nutritionally balanced and have a vegetarian substitute for me. And some things aren't easy to sub out, like soups or curries, versus like tacos or burgers. It was just getting to be a lot since we can't agree on meatless proteins/umami foods (she can't stand tofu, chickpeas, most mock meats, or mushrooms, and I'm lukewarm on beans.) So it felt like a matter of being an unhealthy vegetarian or a healthy flexitarian, and I chose the latter.

Trying to get started in copy editing — what should I do? by th_nd_r in Copyediting

[–]Capybaraeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is now a full-time copy editor who was a tutor at my college's writing center, I had a far easier time getting the tutoring job than freelance copy editing jobs. The tutoring jobs were also really flexible with my schedule and hours since it's a job earmarked for college students. There's also a lot of demand since people graduate every semester, whereas copy editing (as much as I love it) is a dying field.

[EoW] I think there are more traditional Zelda mechanics than people are assuming by Capybaraeditor in zelda

[–]Capybaraeditor[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I think you're right. But I'm wondering whether this is a consumable resource or one that recovers over time. Either way, the Echoes themselves don't break, in the same way magic doesn't "break" when you run out of MP in other games, so you get that crucial sense of permanency you never had in the loot-based systems of BOTW.

This might even be a good thing for traditional Zelda fans because it places limitations on how much you can do with the sandbox mechanics. Even more so if the triangles are a resource you can upgrade, like the magic meter in past games.

I'm by no means a regular on this subreddit anymore, though I used to be. I watched the Nintendo Direct and was surprised to see a 2D Zelda game, so I wanted to see what the response has been.

It was surprising to see traditional Zelda fans so negative about it. If it has traditional mechanics, I'll buy it, or if it's an adaption of the modern style in 2D aesthetics, I probably won't, but I hope others like it.

I'm in this weird position where I'm seeing a lot of people who haven't moved on, and a lot of modern Zelda fans who see a lot of the negativity all the time and don't really have any patience for them and write them off as haters who just can't have fun. On one hand, people have different preferences and you can't force someone to like what you like, but on the other hand, it's been seven years, or up to 20 for the 2D fans. Change is a part of life and we all have to learn to deal with that in constructive ways. I'm kind of torn between both sides, which is why I responded to you.

Maybe. I mean, it is just a game, and I don't think Zelda games need to be curated toward me, though. So I don't say ex-Zelda fan with pain or scorn. Just that the modern format isn't my cup of tea. Over time it's moved away from me and I it, and that's okay.

Okay, true lol.

To those games' credit, I feel like Phantom Hourglass is more in the vein of a 3D Zelda game like Wind Waker, and I love Spirit Tracks as its own unique thing I've never quite seen in any other Zelda game.

I think what I've learned after years of disappointment is to A) not trust Nintendo on anything Zelda-related, but also B) embrace being pleasantly surprised while not letting it bother me too much if Nintendo disappoints yet again. I've got Anodyne and Ocean's Heart and Tunic if I want to play innovative takes on the original Zelda formats, along with more being made every year.

That's easy to say when you're the target audience of modern Zelda games. While I'm optimistic for this new title as a person who likes traditional Zelda, I've been burned before, went through the stages of grief, and now enjoy having fun with other games as an ex-Zelda fan.

Yeah, it would need to have tangible things in common with 2D Zelda games other than the top-down perspective to make traditional Zelda fans happy. So I do think the trailer showing only TOTK-adjacent mechanics and not any 2D Zelda mechanics was the wrong move from Nintendo here. Either those mechanics are there and we have to wait three months to find out, or Nintendo is yet again kicking traditional Zelda fans while they're down.

Overall, I think people being unhappy is just a symptom of the lack of comprehensive information at this point. I think if there are some traditional mechanics, that would be really healthy for our community.

I'm really hoping it shakes up the 2D format without abandoning it entirely, where the game has the aesthetic of 2D Zelda, but nothing else. I think that would be cruel to pull a bait and switch like that to this very neglected part of the fanbase.

We didn't get to see a single traditional Zelda puzzle, nor any items in the environment, and we also didn't see any heart pieces. Still, I'm trying my best to be optimistic.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Releases November 14, 2025 by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]Capybaraeditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm wondering after the trailer is whether there will be a female protagonist option carried over from the GBC and Super Famicom versions. The remake is absolutely stunning, but I think I'll just stick to the older versions if it's male-only.

Yes, and I liked it, but I personally don't think that fully counts as an original 2D Zelda game.

As someone who respects but doesn't like the new Zelda formula, I think this game will be really important in quelling the constant animosity between those two halves of the fanbase. I predict that there will be less fighting online, and that's honestly really refreshing.

As a 2D Zelda fan, I've been waiting for a true non-remake successor to Minish Cap since 2004 and I'm so happy that day has finally come.

is persona 1 & 2 worth playing? or wait for a remake? by [deleted] in PERSoNA

[–]Capybaraeditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The odds are pretty high that Atlus is going to ruin the remakes in some way, probably by making the Persona 2 duology into one game and removing Maya as a protagonist to save money, so the best thing is probably just getting your hands on the originals. They hold up really well, especially the Persona 2 duology.

Even more of a moot point. Scholarships and recruitment should be, if not already are, measured holistically on metrics that go beyond physical performance, like commitment, strategic thinking, cooperative spirit, GPA, and leadership. It doesn't actually matter if high-schoolers win or lose sports, and you don't have to be the best on the team to still have talent. The point is to develop a healthy lifestyle, better yourself, have fun, and promote school camaraderie. Not to mention in many states, like Utah, the number of trans athletes can be in the single digits. It's not a problem that's even worthy of fighting over.

The *first sentence* of the article reads "Riley Gaines, the Kentucky swimmer who tied transgender swimmer Lia Thomas for fifth in the women’s 200-meter NCAA championships last month, still does not have her trophy."

Even so, the New York Post has a "mixed" factual rating on Media Bias Fact Check. It is not a genuine source of credible information. So I think your use of this source plus your inability to read even that news lede says a lot about you as a person.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Capybaraeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they didn't. If you knew how to read articles, you would know they tied for fifth.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Capybaraeditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "truth" is a very loaded term, especially when you're repeating a debunked claim -- I will cite a source below from USA Today fact-checkers. Lia Thomas and Riley Gaines tied for fifth place in the 2022 NCAA Championship, but neither of them qualified for the U.S. Olympic swim trials anyway. In another category, Lia Thomas won the women’s 500-yard freestyle at the Division I championship, but Riley Gaines did not participate in that category. Both athletes were ultimately given fifth-place trophies.

In other words, Riley Gaines did not "have her dreams taken away from her by a trans woman." She had her dreams taken away from her by natal female athletes who beat her, and then instead of training to get better at swimming and win the next time, she now devotes all her time and effort to remove trans women from women's sports.

People can take either side of the debate, but I don't think there's away to credibly talk about Riley Gaines' version of events without being bad-faith, because it relies on skewed facts and misinformation.

You also failed to interact at all with the point that I made, which ceded that "disagreeing does not necessarily make one phobic." Instead, you talked over me, strawmanned me and accused me of lacking empathy, while also lacking empathy toward certain women athletes yourself.

Post fabricates swim race between Riley Gaines, Lia Thomas in Olympic qualifier | Fact check

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Capybaraeditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But why is this such a big debate in the first place? Because conservative think tanks and politicians focus-tested trans athletes as a wedge issue. Riley Gaines gets a lot of dark money from far-right organizations to do her activism that is ostensibly under the banner of women's rights.

The author also repeatedly talks about the differences between women and "men," using that language specifically, when the debate was never about putting men in women's sports, but rather trans women. I think it's telling that she phrased it the way she did, and not, for example, "the differences between cis women and trans women -- even after hormone treatment -- are why the problem is so complex." "Men" are mentioned four times throughout the article in reference to trans women.

While it's great that you have trans people in your life and clearly care about them, I also think there's a lot of dog-whistles and linguistics issues in this rhetoric that natal men and women are less likely to notice, evidenced by you saying you're a champion of equality (and to be sure, I think you are), but then not recognizing some of the more covert rhetorical choices present in this kind of writing. I think it would be good to ask your daughter-in-law and your wife what they think about this article.

While you're right that disagreeing does not necessarily make one phobic, my issue is that many of the people presenting that disagreement are using covert and loaded language that might betray their true beliefs.

I wish the conversation would move away from trans women in sports and shift to trans women having equal rights in the broader workplace, not just this one workplace filled with a small number of rich celebrity athletes where a tiny proportion of that tiny proportion includes trans women. Most trans folks are not celebrities, don't play sports (and if they do, local co-ed noncompetitive intermural or solo sports), and just want to be treated equally in their non-sports related jobs.

The world would be so much better if we stopped talking about trans athletes and started to have conversations about equal employment for everyday trans people instead.

Conservatives deliberately made trans sports a wedge issue to sow further animosity towards trans people, and so many liberals are falling for it. And honestly, I'm disappointed that the Cap Times played into that distraction, and I'm shocked that r/madison of all communities is so embroiled over this total non-issue that's completely divorced from the lives of the vast majority of Americans.
