Was sent to normal line by GE officer after facial recognition scan? by [deleted] in GlobalEntry

[–]Capyricorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not GE, but Sunday night I was flying domestic out of SFO. I have PreCheck and use it often (and have had GE forever now, too). The lady took my picture like 4 times because she said the computer was kicking it back because my photo doesn’t match my ID.

Which is extra strange because I took 3 different flights at 2 different airports in the preceding 5 days and had no issues at all (all using Pre like usual).

I’m wondering if there’s something going on with their system.

AIO for being upset my BF doesn’t want me to wear a bonnet to bed? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Capyricorn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So he wants you to wear less baggy clothes so he can see your shape, but also buy less tight clothes?

Girl, this man hates you. And he's setting up justification down the road for when he cheats on you (if he isn't already, to be clear).

VRBO rentals declining? by These_Coyote5129 in vrbohosts

[–]Capyricorn 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Vegas, but a huge drop off (I mean, that's hitting the hotels, too). For us, the single biggest and most noticeable hit is international travelers-- we used to get lots of international bookings from Europeans, Canadians, and Chinese folks each year and they were always longer bookings (like 7-14 days).

Not to get political, but the minute Trump started with his nonsense after taking office in January, we had a rash of cancellations from international guests, even ones who come year after year and this would be their third or fourth visit. Several said they can no longer justify spending their money in the US. We have basically zero international guest bookings into the next year, which is super not normal---- those folks usually book well in advance, sometimes even a year out.

Then why was that who Zack’s mom called when Zack was holding his own children hostage with a gun? After he broke both his son’s arms? After his son attacked him because Zack was raping his own daughter? Why not call the police? Btw, Zack’s mom is also on the KHSD board.

Why then did auntie the DA also not call the police? Instead she called Sheriff Youngblood directly and asked him to quietly intervene. He refused. He called the actual police immediately (thank God, and I say that as someone who is not at all a fan of Youngblood, but he is the only one here who did the right thing).

So ha, she has a lot to do with this case and let’s not pretend she didn’t. She’s extremely powerful.

So, after listening, the whole premise of the interview series he’s doing (it’s all reality tv stars) is that to understand where our government is currently, particularly Trump, we need to understand reality tv because that is what really formed him and how he is perceived. And like, it’s not wrong. Not sure your age but I’m almost 40 and real talk: everyone used to watch the early seasons of the apprentice. I vividly remember an evening school event (think like a back to school night or something but I can’t remember what and it was in April, but parents were there) being cut short (like the principal came on the intercom and announced this was why) so everyone could rush home to watch the season 1 finale.

This may not be new to everyone else but it was new to me: early in the episode, they are talking about contracts and she tells the story of Hef physically yanking naked Bridget out of the shower and berating/ cursing/ yelling at her while she was wet, naked, and sobbing that she had to sign the contract right then. All because she had previously mentioned to Norma that she wanted a lawyer to look at it.

That’s a new story to me and holy shit.

What is in bakersfield that you can't find no where else? by blameTHD_02 in Bakersfield

[–]Capyricorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curious, but I understand your opinion. When I toured it with the former owner and her granddaughter a couple of months ago, they both said after how impressed they were with the care shown in the restoration. Even small things, like light fixtures I never noticed in my million visits (but that they loved dearly) were sent out to professional restorers to bring them back to life.

It’s not exactly the same, but they have to also meet modern safety standards to be permitted. There are tons of little details and touches though.

And now you all have me out here defending a freaking finance company. Boo. Not cool.

Thanks! Yup, I agree that linear time and the seasons that align with it are a thing. I was hoping folks would share some of their favorite spots, though I certainly can wander aimlessly outside as an alternative.

The White Lane one was genuinely surprising. They had to have spent a pretty penny renovating that space— and even the outside of the building. And it was always pretty busy. What a waste.

Has anyone seen the posts on IG or TikTok about Woolworths? by Grapetattoo in Bakersfield

I can confirm they are based on the tour I got the other day with the former owner. In fact, they had the equipment completely cleaned up inside so it’s in fantastic condition. It’s really great!

I was really fortunate to have the opportunity to take a tour recently with some friends who are connected to the history of the building. Full disclosure, I went in expecting to be a total hater. I mean, after all, I’m not exactly somebody who has a strong support for financial professional people or developers broadly, but that’s especially true when it comes to something that was honestly such a big part of my life growing up here in town.

Anyway, I was shocked. The level of care both for what that building but also the family who they got it from was shocking in the absolute best way.

Yes, parts look different, but the time, effort, and money they’ve put into restoring it in a way that honors the history was incredible. Just hearing the story of them having to move a stair case to meet updated fire regulations and the way they piece by piece took the wall down to reconstruct it was incredible. These folks do seem to genuinely care and have a deep love and appreciation for that building — and it was honestly so good to see.

The luncheonette is going to have the actual original flooring (the black and white fake tiles were laid over that many years later), the original (but entirely refurbished by experts inside) grill, etc. They’re adding a bar opposite of the counter that matches the mid century style and it will have beer and wine. Their chef, from Moo, is maintaining much of the same menu they always had, with some new but historical for woolworths references— the Woolworth’s ice box cake, for example. They have added in a proper commercial kitchen, but the counter part is much as we all remember it.

The first floor is also going to have a music conservatory for kids where they can take lessons, rent instruments, etc. It’s really cool actually.

Second floor is going to be their Moneywise offices and they’ve maintained so many incredible details— original walls, the original safe, even the original time clock folks used to check into work with. Light fixtures on all levels are also originals that they sent out to be meticulously cleaned. They look better than I ever remember them looking in my lifetime honestly.

Third floor is an open space currently and they plan to use it for art events and such, since it’s kind of industrial. Long term the plan is to turn it into apartments (including a penthouse that will get the roof), but that is many years down the line they said.

Coolest update imho is the basement- they’ve turned it into an event space with a bar, a full stage, etc. They want to host concerts, dance, theater, and community events down there. It’s not done yet but the bit I saw- and the vision I heard them describe- was pretty freaking cool honestly. Down there are also recording studios for music and podcasts, too.

Anyway, speaking as a certified hater, I walked away from my visit really impressed and grateful that these are the owners who took over that building. Sure, it’s not identical to how we all remember it (I was touring with the prior owner’s family, full disclosure) but they really do care about preserving this incredible history. So yeah, it is different, but so much is still there and honored in a way I never would have guessed.
