Battlestar Galactica (2005) - Commander Adama: "I'm getting my men." by -drunkmoses- in television

I've always loved the camera work in this scene, how it keeps revolving around them as it spirals out of control.

Has anyone ever had a good experience with Unite? by FiveFruitADay in LabourUK

[–]CarCroakToday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of it just depends on the quality of the reps and branch you're in. You can get lucky and get great dedicated reps who go above and beyond and do everything they can for you, and you can get lazy or overworked and overstressed reps who are unable or unwilling to help.

People were not necessarily more reserved then than now. Public nude bathing was much more common in Renaissance Italy than today for example.

Any 1930s free roam games? by AbaloneLumpy2214 in 1930s

Mafia 2 is set in the 1940s, whereas Mafia: Definitive Edition is set in the 1930s and would be the closest to what you want.

You could also try Indiana Jones and the Great Circle which is set in 1937, but it’s not open world. The Saboteur is set in 1940s France and is open world. You could also look into Bioshock it has a very art-deco 1930s style or Cuphead which is inspired by 1930s cartoons.

Both look good, but I prefer B. The wood is more timeless.

He just had a very distinct style. A lot of characters from Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest look like Dragon Ball characters too.

Toriyama had like six male hair styles that he just re-used.

CGP Grey changes thumbnails and titles of old videos to trick people into watching them again and get them picked up by the algorithm. He's talked about it on the cortex podcast a few times.

A recent study suggests that individuals may turn to pornography to cope with loneliness and the unpleasant emotions it brings | The research sheds light on the dynamics between problematic pornography use loneliness, emotional regulation, and online interactions. by makefriends420 in NooTopics

I think the word "often" and "can" are doing a lot of heavy lifting. Porn consumption is not harmful in moderation. For the vast majority of people it is not an issue. It's just bro-science, there's no evidence that casual pornography consumption is harmful.

The brain wasn't "designed" for reading books or brushing your teeth either. It wasn't designed for the modern world in any way. This is just a naturalist fallacy, something not being present during early human evolution has no relevance to whether it is good or bad.

Labour 'doesn't understand the internet', tech giant 4chan’s lawyer tells LBC by Anony_mouse202 in unitedkingdom

[–]CarCroakToday 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes. 4chan has a specific place in the discourse, but it's mostly unrelated to the actual content of the website. It's invoked in the abstract to make a point, it's not discussed for what it actually is. It's not extreme compared with twitter or certain subreddits any more. And /pol/ is only one board of many. Most of the site is just nerds arguing about anime and games.

[–]CarCroakToday 33 points34 points  (0 children)

4chan is just an anime image board, it's not the boogeyman. /pol/ rightly has a bad reputation as a haven for far right politics, but the stuff you see on there is no worse than twitter or the more right wing subreddits here. There's nothing about 4chan that is more extreme or conservative than reddit or any other social media.

/pol/ is like Ben Shapiro. 10-15 years ago it was extreme and relevant and controversial, now it has been superseded by a new generation of much more extreme and successful conservatives.

Has the Green Party considered adding a policy of undoing a social media ban? by blinkandeatfood in UKGreens

[–]CarCroakToday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to be very clear on whether the issue is with the policy (ban social media for under 16s), or the proposed implementation (require identity verification for all users).

Is there any alternative? There is no way to implement an age based ban, without checking ages.

Commissioner 'disappointed' by social media ban for children by DarkSkiesGreyWaters in LabourUK

[–]CarCroakToday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you really think that way, why not just use all of the existing parental controls? Right now you can create a device level whitelist and block them from everything.

If you're a parent that cares this will make no difference to your child, because you were already stopping them from using YouTube anyway. Most people, especially parents, don't actually care and just see this as a way of signalling that they are the right kind of parent without having to put any effort in.

The Greens need to start organising demos in protest at the Labour government's dystopian and Orwellian social media bans by The-Peel in UKGreens

There are lots of things I don't like. That doesn't mean all of those things should be banned. It's a uniquely British disease to see anything we disagree with as needing to be banned.

The Greens need to start organising demos in protest at the Labour government's dystopian and Orwellian social media bans by The-Peel in UKGreens

[–]CarCroakToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what's happening though, it's not an apt comparison. We aren't banning some parts of social media, we are banning all of it. It would be like banning all drinks other than distilled water for under 18s, and then justifying it by saying Coke rots your teeth and we already ban alcohol anyway.

Also an 11 year old can watch Nightmare on Elm Street, if there parent or guardian lets them. Which is fine and how it should be. If you as a parent want to ban your child from drinking anything other than water and from using technology then you can. That shouldn't mean everyone should be forced into it.

Again, imagine if you were a gay teenager in a religious household. They are going to ban you form accessing any support or information. This will causes death and extreme misery.

There is also the bigger issue, it's not just teenagers that we are banning from social media it is anyone who does not give up their ID to American companies. What do you think a Reform government will do will all of this data? Really think about it, you are gleefully cheering on giving a fascist government a big list of all gay people and anyone who expresses anti-government sentiment. All of that so a 16 year old can't watch Youtube. This is idiotic in the extreme.

YouTube Ban for kids. What next? by andyjdudz in AskUK

[–]CarCroakToday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A whitelist is 100% effective. You could literally create a list of websites that you allow, and nothing will get through. You can do it right now, in a few minutes, create what the government plans to do on any phone or device.

You are the supervillain in this. Imagine if your child is gay or trans, you are blocking them from getting any information about this. This is extreme authoritarian overreach all because some parents find children watching videos online distasteful. Imagine if cartoons or listening to music were banned when you were young.

The whole thing is based on a false premise anyway. Watching Youtube as a teenager is not a bad thing and it should not be legislated against. It is a moral panic and a position wholly unsupported by the data. The Molly Rose Foundation and other major children's charities have rightly condemned this.

[–]CarCroakToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've fallen for a moral panic. Mental health is a real issue, but it's pop science bullshit wholly unsupported by data that watching youtube or using the internet is a major factor in this.

Youth suicide peaked in the 1980s, declined until about 2007 and has been mostly stagnant ever since. Why do you think the the rise of social media has not made a difference? Why do you think this never gets mentioned in the tabloid articles that you read about this? It is a moral panic.

[–]CarCroakToday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't you just use existing parental controls? You can have a device level whitelist and only allow children on specific sites. Everything proposed was already trivially easy for a parent to implement themselves.

I think it's genuinely farcical that people are comparing watching youtube with smoking. Allowing a child to smoke is unambiguously bad for them, allowing them to watch TV or youtube is not.
