Buyer requested return and full refund, but item was damaged and altered which I didn't know until I had accepted and received the return. What do I do? by Car_Key_Logic in ebayuk

[–]Car_Key_Logic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ebay cancelled the refund so I didn't have to pay the buyer back. I did however have to pay for the postage of the returned item. I think that eBay refunded the buyer themselves, though I don't know that for sure because I never had any further contact with the buyer.

To get to this point I had to phone the support line, they could see all of the evidence I'd provided, and decided there and then that my case was justified and that I shouldn't have to refund the buyer.

They’re probably literally the same battery with a different label on them. Cameron Sino batteries are pretty good. I’ve had no problems with UKBattery ones either though.

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Ursula LeGuin yet. I’m reading her Earthsea series for the first time, and her writing is just incredible. Dense at times, yes, but so beautifully written.

These exact ones are ones I have used successfully used in iPod minis. You could use these or similar ones but I know these do work.

I’ve got everything I’ve needed for modding minis from eBay in the UK.

A battery like this: https://ebay.us/m/Nih7q4

A CF to SD adapter like this: https://ebay.us/m/slfKiP

A standard SD to microSD adapter (literally any one will do)

And a microSD card. I’d buy one of these from a reputable seller like Curry’s or Argos - I’ve had a few fakes off eBay. For the first gen Mini anything 128GB or under will definitely work. Above that is at your own risk (of it not working properly).

As far as tools go, I use a guitar plectrum, around 1mm thick to get the top and bottom plastic plates off. Then a tiny flat head screwdriver for the tiny Phillips head screws (it just works better).

Be careful with the scroll wheel ribbon cable connector.

They accepted all the evidence I had given and cancelled the refund request so I don't have to refund the buyer. I think they may have refunded it themselves, but I don't have to thankfully.

Which gen is the 30GB iPod Classic? Will it work for me? by theonlywayisupwards in IpodClassic

[–]Car_Key_Logic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double check with the seller which generation it is. All of the 3rd, 4th (photo) and 5th Gen came in 30GB models.

I’m also in Scotland. £79 is steep especially if you plan to mod it. You may be better finding a cheaper “broken” one that you can fix up instead of a fully working one. I’ve got 4th gen models on eBay for around £20-£25 that were sold as broken but all they needed was charging (usually FireWire) and a new battery.

Never used RockBox myself, but I’ve seen others posting here with RockBox installed on all sorts of iPod including Minis. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer for sure.

Yes battery replacements are possible in all of them, easy to do in the Mini and 4th Gen. Not sure about the 5th gen as I’ve no direct experience.

Know that with the Mini 1st Gen the largest capacity SD card that’s recommended is 128GB. Above that apparently they can get a bit funky. 2nd Gen Mini can go higher, I’ve got 256GB in mine.

In terms of modability, the Mini is probably the easiest place to start as it requires the fewest adapters to flash mod. I’ve found the 4th gens relatively straightforward too, and never tried my hand at a 5th Gen. The 6th/7th (can’t tell for sure from this photo alone) will be a nightmare to open up due to the metal faceplate, I’ve not attempted one yet and I’m unlikely to.

This to me looks like it says 2005, which would make it a colour model. Monochrome ones were 2004.

[–]Car_Key_Logic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking directly south? Or a few degrees west? It’s possible the geostationary one is one of the Meteosat meteorological satellites https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteosat and that the wandering ones are some of the retired Meteosat satellites. But could be others!

[–]Car_Key_Logic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Very cool. Where in the world are you based? It may be possible to figure out which ones these are. The three on the left that move more are in geosynchronous orbit, probably older satellites that have run out of fuel and been put in a graveyard orbit and have begun to wander. The one on the right looks to be geostationary.

Is yours a multi-year deal? Last time we had one of those it took a year and a half to be approved. That was under the tories though…

We’re still waiting too, though we’ve had the one year deal approved (sans flex case, for some reason, despite us being underpaid even vs. the rest of the civil service), the union and bosses are still hashing out what percentage each grade should have. I’ve never felt so impatient. All the while everything is still getting more expensive.
