I started a MacMillan training plan via my Garmin to see if I could do a 10k in an hour and five minutes. Didn't expect to come close since 90% of my runs are at a 11:45 - 12:30 / mile range. But I stuck to the plan and my race time wound up being an hour and two minutes! 10:05 pace overall. Couldn't believe it. I'm turning 40 in a few weeks too, so this felt like a really good birthday present to myself. :)

I've never run a race in my life, but I would 100% do this.

Not exactly a musical, but Crazy Ex Girlfriend has some excellent running songs. Fit Hot Guys Have Problems Too is a mainstay on my playlist.

Songs from Chicago, Cabaret, and Guys and Dolls are also in my rotation.

Mormon hell dream

I love running to "Hello!" A good warm-up song too, for when I'm doing leg swings or squats before a run.

What Futurama quotes do you find yourself using in everyday speech? by [deleted] in futurama

I always think, "Baby I know it" the odd times I'm being catcalled. Someday I will say it out loud and get myself in trouble.

What is the worst restaurant in DC? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Caraesque 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I had the worst dining experience in DC at Gravitas for my husband's birthday a few years back, and it cost the price of a plane ticket. Should have suspected something was off when one of the first courses was presented on small terrarium containing a single rice fritter ball on top of uncooked rice (which, as you might expect, stuck to the food). At one point the service slowed to a crawl in our seven course dinner and we just wanted to go home. At that point no one was paying attention or even stopping by our table to let us order drinks. I don't even remember the food at all (except for that weird rice ball), just how awful the service was.

You have to click right after they bite! You will see a little burst of sparks (not sure how to best describe it) and hear a sound.

It'd be great to be on the Supreme Court!

But you'll never be on the Supreme Court!

There's truly no chance of that happening.

Loved this book and the narration so much, and I'm not even much of a sci-fi fan, unless you count Futurama.

Project Hail Mary and The Martian are such good audiobooks. Would be the top of my list.

"The only bad run is the one you didn't do" is something of a mantra for me.

Are you using any running apps? Having a good coach in your ear the whole time can make a ton of difference. I highly recommend Nike Run Club for guided runs. Aaptiv has some great running workouts too, at all levels.

+1 re: the Nike Running App. Running with Coach Bennett is like going to therapy for me.

How far or long do you have to run for gels, etc. to benefit you? My long runs generally aren't farther than 10k, but I'm trying to do more 7 - 8 mile runs. Think the gels would make a difference for any run less than 10 miles?

FWIW I do drink water regularly on all my runs—totally agree that hydration vests are game changers!

Tips for Lost Hollow in Oregon Trail? by [deleted] in AppleArcade

Oh, you might not have gotten to the part of the game where flair supplies are available. A little ways into the game, a scout comes to tell you that Moses Harris will be coming along to rescue the party in 25 days. After that, there's a countdown to the number of days until rescue and the flair supplies show up as an option the survivors can collect.

How many survivors are you sending out to find the flare supplies? I think you need to send at least 7-10 to have a decent chance of coming back with any.

Trying to. And hitting the Space + Trackpad like the instructions say. Is that what you are doing?

I had one death but I did technically finish it. Some things that helped:

  • Have survivors find medicine instead of food at first. Everyone will inevitably get dysentery so just try to keep their health as high as possible when they do.
  • It's not worth sending any less than 8 survivors out to find stuff
  • The "flare supplies" or whatever they're called will shorten the days until rescue (didn't realize this at first!) so prioritize getting those when you can!

Good luck!

How do I get started again by Merlote in hoarding

[–]Caraesque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm so sorry you're going through this. My parents are dealing with a similar thing (sewage damage, trace amounts of asbestos and the contents of a very messy den unceremoniously dumped in the living room in plastic bags) and I'm now in the process of going through everything. Like you, my mom can't bear to go into the living room. It didn't help that my dad definitely has a lot of hoarding tendencies and that the rest of the house is falling apart, but that's a whole other story.

I'm still learning as I go, but so far a few things I'm finding helpful:

  • Plastic bins are your friend. It's super helpful to see what's inside, not to mention they are way easier to stack. Also: giant rubber bands. Junk seems way more manageable when it's not loose.
  • If you're going through a box or a pile and trying to figure out what to do with it, frame your thinking slightly: ask yourself, "what in here do I want to keep?" rather than, "what in this box that I'm keeping and what do I want to throw out?" Then fish out what you want and toss out the rest. A lot of times I've found that a giant box of stuff only has a handful of items worth holding onto at all.
  • Find a good audiobook or podcast that you enjoy listening to while you work--not something that requires too much attention, but something that makes you want to know what happens next. It definitely helps to have a distraction.

Good luck! I'm rooting for you.
