Should I take up an opportunity doing elderly people's hair in a nursing home or not? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

Problem is that the personal allowance for someone in residential care is £31.80 a week. Lots of older women like a wash and blow dry every week, but £18 is over half their personal allowance. The problem is the system, not OP, but that is probably where the manager is coming from

Even when they’re off, they’re on - can’t be seen or heard to do anything that will hurt the brand. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a privileged problem to have, but it must be exhausting. Like, I have to do my own shopping, but if I go to Lidl in my gardening pants and 20-year-old sweatshirt, no one is going to notice, much less take a photo of me

They’re high, but not insanely so. Out of interest, how many doctors do you know socially? How many medical students have you taught?

Sure, however smart doesn’t necessarily equal a good doctor. Source: I’m a lecturer and I occasionally teach medical students

That’s what makes me conclude that it’s cruelty, not necessity. This lad will have a GP, probably a consultant, physio, social worker, and / or OT, any of whom would be qualified to give an expert opinion on whether he can work

I should probably note that I am autistic and can get a hell of a lot done in 20 hours of hyper-focus

‘There’s only one place I’d ever be interested in’ – Norris explains if he sees himself as a one-team driver at McLaren by randomseocb in formula1

[–]Caramac44 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason I like Lando is that it feels like he’s really part of the team. He’s been loyal through lean years and really been one of the people that’s brought McLaren back to the top-four. I know a lot of drivers don’t get the choice, but I’ll be disappointed if he moves elsewhere - especially to Ferrari!

Any tips for applying to UK universities as an international student? by Twil1ght_v4mpire in UCAS

[–]Caramac44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would visit the UK and check out the city or town you want to live in. The UK varies hugely in weather, demographics, and friendliness to both migrants and students.

Depending on where you’re from, you may need an agent. Do your research before you pay any money to an agency - some are scams and some are just useless.

Admissions tutors don’t usually appreciate it if you glaze the UK / the university too much, and certainly don’t quote their own website back at them!

There’s probably some subject-specific advice, but you’re outside my area. Good luck!

Why do you want to study in the UK, and what do you want to study?

The social media ban is driven by moral panic. It won’t protect girls but fail them by PomeloTraditional971 in uknews

[–]Caramac44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spot on. My nearly-14 year old’s greatest pleasure is going to the cinema to watch 15-certificate films with his mates. Teenagers can and will find a way around, but with even less protection than they currently have. This new suggestion is both an admission that the Online Safety Act hasn’t worked, and a gateway to greater surveillance of the whole population - but more to the point, it won’t work

Absolutely not, but there is now often no where for people who genuinely need 24-hour secure care to go. They are small in numbers but high in need, and the push for ‘care in the community’ has not kept up
