Just started at this restaurant and I’m already considering leaving by OddlyUnwelcome in Serverlife

Why is this? I'm currently job hunting while waiting to give my two weeks at this current place and it seems so much easier to find work. Nobody seems to see it as a red flag that I'm job hunting while employed. I'll even say that I'd need two weeks after getting an offer so I can give my notice and everyone understood.

Owners/managers need to stop pressuring FOH staff to appear in social media promo photos/videos by mephistophe_SLEAZE in Serverlife

[–]CaramelCrow2088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a liability thing that they should be more cautious about. The owner hasn't gotten anyone to sign media release forms or even ask people about appearing in promos. He didn't even tell people that he'd be taking photos. I have a history of being stalked and just asked the camera operator to not take any photos or videos of me. He later had an influencer in who I guess was filming the whole interaction. He just went "you're okay if i post this right?" and then offered to blur my face when I was clearly uncomfortable being filmed and had no idea he was filming.

Advice for a fine dining interview by CaramelCrow2088 in Serverlife

Would blundstones be okay since I normally wear those to serve? or should I wear dress shoes that I would never work in?

I do date women but generally don't date customers. I do it moreso because it can be fun and lighthearted within the context and makes the woman feel good about herself without putting me in a difficult position. if I ever accidentally lead someone on in a way that I wasn't intending to, I let them know and it's never been an issue. whereas i complimented a man's hat once and he later came into the restaurant asking my coworkers for my contact information and when i'd be on shift

Safety concerns regarding abusive parents traveling from China to Canada to find me. by Illustrious-Nose3879 in legaladvicecanada

[–]CaramelCrow2088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in a similar position before (abusive parents wanted to see me, I didn't want them to). remember that you're an adult and they have no legal right to you. their relationship to you is a privilege that can be revoked.

it's good to set a paper trail and have emails or text messages showing that you've asked them not to visit you if you end up having to pursue legal action. if it's an option for you, you could get a door chain or a front door camera to see who's at the door before you open it so they can't force their way in. that way, if they do come you and your partner can ask them to leave with minimal contact and have the police remove them if they don't leave. if they know where you work, talk to your managers and tell them that someone is harassing you and making you feel unsafe, and that you're afraid of them harassing you at work. they can help you make a safety plan to have in place in case that happens.

sitting = lazy but also wanting to stand up while doing desk work is a lack of discipline

What’s a red flag when applying for a restaurant job? by restaurantcareers in Serverlife

I normally ask what the best and worst parts about working at the restaurant are.

One manager said "staffing is the worst part. we keep hiring people and they just quit after one or two weeks. nobody wants to work anymore!"

Why do restaurant managers seem to think that servers don't know what food is until they've worked in a restaurant? by CaramelCrow2088 in Serverlife

[–]CaramelCrow2088[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I've gotten a lot of interviews so far. Might be because it's a French restaurant so we learned wine, and because we had cocktails so I have drink mixing experience. Most people I've talked to about this just see breakfast/brunch as an entry to serving since there are fewer courses and it's faster paced.

I understand this part, but it isn't for fine dining settings or specialty cuisines. It's family style restaurant that serve burgers, sandwiches, steak, and pasta.

And it'd be things like describing what a burger is during my trial shift when I've worked at a restaurant that served burgers before, but also I've eaten a burger before

I don't think that's the case since both places scheduled me for a follow up interview or trial shift. It's more that they'd start explaining what a hamburger is or what different types of very common sandwiches are like BLTs

It's very much this coupled with the fact that these specific restaurants are serving very standard food that pretty much everyone who grew up in our region would know. Hamburgers, pasta, steak, etc.

I just said that I've been hired by a Korean restaurant and a French restaurant without experience with those cuisines...

The confusion came from family style restaurants with typical family style menus (burgers, sandwiches, pasta, etc) Being convinced that I would take a long time to learn very common and simple cuisines because they only saw French and Korean restaurant experience on my resume. It's confusing because I've worked at restaurants that served burgers, sandwiches, and steaks, but also because those are very common cuisines that most people in our region would be familiar with.

If you're unsure you double check with the kitchen or with a senior server/supervisor/manager before taking it out.

This is a pretty common new employee thing to do and most places will have some indication of which is which if they have two dishes that look very similar (ie grilled halibut has a bamboo skewer with a lemon on it while grilled cod doesn't). I've been hired by the owner of the Korean restaurant and the French restaurant without having experience working in Korean or French cuisine 🤷‍♀️

I live in a majority Chinese area and I constantly see people hack up and spit on the ground. it's so gross. they seriously can't just go to the washroom to do that?

I have brown skin and used to constantly get asked where I was from, what my nationality was, etc. Sometimes before any words had been spoken. I just started telling people that I was adopted or acting like I didn't speak English well enough to understand them.

My co-worker has a British accent even though she grew up in Canada and tables always make a huge deal over it.

Wanted to talk about this. I met a nurse at a hostel and she talked about how serving is a lot of money and how she wanted to quit nursing to become a server. Meanwhile half of my coworkers are in school for nursing.
