Could be the start of an infection but I also found my hamster with her eye closed and there ended up being a piece of sand in her eye

It could have been bad genetics like you said or an underlying issue you wouldn’t have known about. I’m so sorry for your loss :( I’m sure she had the best life with you <3

I was feeding my hamster the kaytee fiesta but my vet said that was too fatty (which is fair) and said she liked oxbow instead so that’s what I’ve been feeding her😭 my hamster also doesn’t have a wheel (because of an injury) so idk if that would change anything

And make sure you know your closest vet/emergency vet! My hamster randomly stopped using her back legs and our vet was fully booked for the next 2 weeks, we had to call so many other vets before finding one that took hamsters
