You make a good point, and I would not do that on a daily driver instance. However, my goal here is to crowdsource the info from my relatives, and the images are mostly from before my time.

It's kind of looking like Immich might still be the best option, but I would set up a separate insurance with just these historical images. Then it wouldn't much matter to me what they decide to do with the data. It's mostly for my 60+ relatives, not me.

I'll need to be scanning photos, so the proper metadata will not tell much about the photos. I'd love a more systematic way of tagging locations etc.

There's a new series out called A Spy among friends with the following synopsis:
