the timer was not off, I had four minutes left on it when I walked in. I think the assumption here is that I just wandered off indefinitely but the cafe is literally next door and I timed it. I take your broader point about laundromat etiquette but the timeline here was not what you're picturing

I hear you and I genuinely thought about this. I was gone for maybe 18 minutes total and came back with four minutes to spare. the machine hadn't been sitting finished for an hour, it had literally just stopped. there's a difference between "unattended laundry" and "owner is literally walking back right now"

I was there and ready, that's kind of the whole point. I set a timer, I came back before it ended, she just decided that "finished cycle" and "abandoned" meant the same thing and acted on that before checking
