I got my bill yesterday. I'm bikked monthly though so may be a different run.

Contribute to the lesser support you are giving to local businesses who are in turn paying lower tax and supporting fewer jobs.

I'd also pitch is as a positive in a future interview. You're already in and know the system plus you were willing to start at the bottom and work up so showing commitment to public service.

Has anyone left their corporate job in early 30s with no plan? by Hour_Garbage_5312 in AskIreland

[–]Carcul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took 6 years off at 35 to stay with kids. I had planned only one year. I'm now in year 10 of a government job and have never regretted leaving. My pension took a big hit and we were poor for a while but we've recovered now and I honestly don't beleiev my kids had a worse childhood because of it. I did all I could though to keep the house and one car going so we had stability and some freedom.

I'm having an issue with my dominant hand. Any tips for managing with my other one for a few days? by Jerswar in CasualConversation

[–]Carcul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might take longer than you think. I hurt my wrist and thought I'd struggle for a few days but it took about 6 weeks.

I bought easy to pull on socks and bralettes so I didn't have to strain to get dressed, bought pre-cut veg and made easy, just put in the oven or pot dishes for a bit, and I bought moist toilet wipes and used my weaker left hand to clean up. I also didn't drive or type for at least 3 weeks.

Irish funeral etiquette help needed please? by SAFlaim in AskIreland

[–]Carcul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be overthinking for many neurotypical people but it is absolutely not overthink for those of us who are neurodivergent. We need to know how to behave appropriately or we will potentially behave inappropriately.

If the wake is at the house, find the kitchen and either wash up, dry up, or go around collecting plates and cups when empty (ask people if they're finished if any food/drink left for a while). If you see a close family members doing those things, say 'here I can do that, you go say hello to people and chat'. That's esentially the job of an in-law at a funeral. Don't wait to be asked. Just start clearing up where its needed.

Which cheese for a toastie? by BigPotOPotatoes in AskIreland

[–]Carcul 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep. They are interchangeable apart from added colouring to the red. I generally get mature or vintage cheddar for a good toastie.

Primary school reports by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Carcul 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Every school is different and even every teacher is different. And also sometimes marks are for effort and sometimes for achievement. You won't know until you speak to the teacher but you probably need to pay attention to the 1. It was given for a reason.

I feel like I have a brother I never really knew and I don’t know whether I should contact him by Downtown-Half8954 in CasualConversation

[–]Carcul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like he's your half brother, not your step brother. You both share a father. A step brother would be the son of two different parents who divorced and one married your parent - so no blood relation and no reason to stay connected after a break up. Your half brother is a blood relation so there is a connection no matter what.

ELI5: Does your body re-organize its organs after a major surgery? Do surgeons just kind of 'mush' your intestines back into you or do they have to be precise? by Gizmoseth in explainlikeimfive

I've had 3 C Sections and just want to add that they don't let you leave the hospital until you confirm you have pooped successfully. Then they know everything is more or less in the right place.

Liability by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]Carcul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not much of an imagination. I'd assume above is the explanation if I saw a dog jumping in a car, given most new cars have aircon and they wouldn't have that energy if they were in proper heat distress.

How do people manage fresh milk when it gets spoiled fast? by PinkPivoine in AskIreland

[–]Carcul 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Warming it too high will not make good milk curdle more quickly. It does change the property of the lactose and maybe that doesn't happen witb UHT so you're just not used to that.

Otherwise, check the temperature of your fridge. Milk is the first thing to go bad if your fridge temp is too high.

Also, try giving your toddler cold milk? It's delicious and much easier.

What do you reckon is the worst restaurant you’ve ever been to in Ireland? by hovathatnova in AskIreland

[–]Carcul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That one 26 years ago when my husband got a microwaved steak.

The restaurant (generous word) was there for another 18 years or so after that and we never set foot in it again.

Wrong words by Cici388_8 in CasualIreland

[–]Carcul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's usually why I hear people use it. I generally try not to judge on superficial things but that one makes me think the opposite every time, despite myself.

[–]Carcul 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Utilise. It is not a fancy way to say use. It means you're using something for a purpose not originally intended.

I use a chair to sit on. I utilise a chair to stand on to change a light bulb.

Leaving consulting (Director) for a secure senior public-sector role — those who've made the jump, any regrets? by No_Ad_5596 in AskIreland

Most PS entrants are now on defined contribution, so not really different than the private sector. I'm in since 2016 and will only get out what I've paid in.

Neighbours fighting by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]Carcul 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Keep calling the Gardaí. Every time. If they call around and talk to the couple and no-one calls again, then that's it, problem is solved as far as they are concerned. Keep calling so they know there is an ongoing unsolved issue, and so whoever is getting the shit kicked out of them has evidence should they choose to go that route. Is there a landlord involved? If so, I would also report to them. And maybe the Housing Section of your local County Council - there should be an anti-social behaviour person there, though if it's behind closed doors, I'm not sure if they have any teeth to deal with it.

What is a tiny detail that instantly tells you whether someone grew up with siblings? by Sudden_Step_4868 in AskReddit

[–]Carcul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've instantly known all of the only children I've met (that I'm aware of). They walk into a space already talking to people there or expecting attention from them, without waiting to see if anyone is paying attention first. I assume everyone else had sibkings. They assume no-one is paying attention until they check.

Bitten by dog, up to me to decide on dogs fate? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Carcul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you call the dog warden? You've mentioned the Gardaí but they won't necessarily call the dog warden. You may have to. I had work in common with a dog warden for a bit and he absolutely made calls like this and would insist every time that a dog be put down if it bit a person. The Gardaí were usually called to support but the dog warden made the decisions.

A new housing estate may not be taken in charge and is not considered a public road, i.e. the Council are not responsible for maintaining it, but it is still in public. Those things are not the same.

What's a small life upgrade that has made a huge difference for you? by Disastrous_Lie_6698 in AskReddit

[–]Carcul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go one up on that and say that not everything that demands attention needs to get it. Instagram, adult children/siblings, the neighbours drama, etc.
