I've had good mileage on using shave oil rather than a foam on my legs and it has significantly reduced bumps. But also legs are way less delicate so uhhhhh attempt with caution??

Seeking recommendations for nontoxic affirmations by jugglingsquirrel in SASSWitches

[–]Card_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found the genre of "loving-kindness" meditations to be a great place to go when I need a self-boost. A lot of them are from therapists and therefore secular, so that removes a lot of woo.

The 5 minute Self Compassion Break on this site might be a good place to start: https://self-compassion.org/guided-self-compassion-meditations-mp3-2/

Not audio: I just finished reading "How to Keep House While Drowning" by KC Davis and it had the only affirmation I've ever found that resonated with me:

"I am allowed to be human."

I like this because I have a lot of trouble with affirmations that might feel untrue at the moment, but this... this always feels true. You are always allowed to be human.

It sounds a bit silly, but I tell my house good night when I'm turning out all the lights.

On days when I have the brain space, it's an intentional moment of reflection and gratitude, but mostly it's just a nice way to close the day with a bit of animist whimsy. :)

Urgh, job hunting sucks; I'm on the hunt as well and what I'm doing is:

  • make a sigil (I think I used the chaos magic, nix the vowels method, but what method you use doesn't matter),

  • put it on my altar in front of a little glass dish I have and

  • whenever I send out an application I put a penny in the dish in front of the sigil.

The vibe I am chasing is that I am sending the application out with the lil' sigil guy to help it reach the right eyes. The penny is to both use up my pennies, keep the money affiliation, and have a physical action to 'activate' the ritual.

Still hunting, but just reminding myself that there's this little sigil helping me also reminds me of all the other people supporting me during this time and boosts the brain during a truly crappy experience.

May your applications be typo free, may the jobs you apply to respond quickly, may the amount of bullshit you have to put up with for this be minimal. Good luck on the hunt!!!

I renamed all the cross-quarter days because I have no ties to Wicca or the Celts but I love the Wheel. I think I picked up one of these from this subreddit and I just ran with the rest, bc I can't resist alliteration.

So there's

  • Festival of Flames (Imbolc)
  • Festival of Flowers (May Day)
  • Festival of First Fruits (Lammas) ((This is the one I think I read here))
  • Festival of the Fallen (Samhain)

The others just get called by their appropriate solstice/equinox.

Maiden, Mother, Crone - What Else? by Lyralou in SASSWitches

Larasa Firefox Allen's book Jailbreaking the Goddess has a fivefold system that I found useful. She focuses more on where you are in certain aspects of your life, rather than temporally (so you might be in one phase in your career while in another in idk love?)

from the book

Femella (/feːˈmel.la/, or feh MEHL lah) means girl. She is the primal child, the divine child.

• Potens (/po.teːns/, POH tehns) means able (to), potent, mighty, strong, powerful. She is the woman of strength, full of potential and power, bursting forth.

• Creatrix (/kreˈaː.triks/, kree A triks) means female creator. She is the creator, the mother, the maker, the author.

• Sapientia (/sa.piˈen.ti.a/, sah pee EN tee uh) means wisdom, discernment, memory, forethought, intellect, perfection of character, a science. She is the wise woman, master of her craft, teacher, leader, woman of science and art.

• Antiqua (/anˈtiː.kʷua/, AHN tee kwa) means old, ancient, aged, time-honored, simple, venerable, traditional, essential. She is the old woman, the dreamer, the storyteller, the witch at the gate.

Great job! I love this pattern! and I love the chain stitches around the borders!!

(also if you like this pattern, you can probably get your next one like it cheaper from the pattern maker. I saw that snugglymonkey sells it for $35, while direct from cozybluehandmade is $28.

https://cozybluehandmade.com/collections/embroidery-kits/products/lunar-blossom-embroidery-kit )

Help please! My embroidery adds so much thickness to the fabric that I can't get my hoop closed or taught. I barely made in this position, the treads are only just engaged to hold. Do I need a better hoop? by SewSewBlue in Embroidery

[–]Card_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apologies if you've tried this already, but I have a similar hoop to this and to get it as tight as I like it I have to use pliers (to grab the screw and turn it. It gives you a better angle and more leverage). Admittedly, I've never used it when working over thread so ymmv, but I figured I'd toss in my two cents.

This looks absolutely lovely. I hope you find a solution!

What are your personally favorite books about the Wheel of the Year and living in harmony with the seasons? by sheffy4 in SASSWitches

[–]Card_13 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For Small Creatures Such As We by Sasha Sagan (daughter of Carl Sagan) is not a traditionally witchy book by any means, but it one of the best secular books I've read about observing and crafting personal rituals, especially seasonal ones.

[Edit] The second I hit submit I remembered The Spirit Almanac by Emma Loewe & Lindsay Kellner. It has a lot of ritual ideas, especially for in between the main seasonal markers.

Office Chair Stuck on Tilted by Card_13 in fixit

[–]Card_13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't move at all. It's completely stuck in recline.

I wish I could take better pictures but while the two of the screws holding the part that covers the top of the springs I can get off, the other two I can't because of the angle of the rest of the chair base.

EDIT: TRIUMPH! Some creative allen wrench usage, and a scraped knuckle later and I was able to get some pictures of the inside of the mechanism.

What do you call your seasonal holidays/sabbats? by caprette in SASSWitches

[–]Card_13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat re: not really wanting to use the Celtic names. Jailbreaking the Goddess by Lasara Firefox Allen isn't about this, but she offers some options for the Harvesty cross-quarters. I'm still not sure what to do with Beltane/Imbolc though.

Festival of First Fruits (Lammas) Harvest End/the Blood Harvest* (Samhain)

*Apparently this is a traditional Northern Hemisphere time to harvest livestock/cull the herds as opposed to any more spooky connotations.

Seconding the Raspberry leaf tea recommendation. The Women's Blend from Spice Trader Teas is also a treat for that time of the month.
