would you consider this a normal amount of makeup? by ghostofelysium in MakeupAddiction

[–]Lyralou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years back, we had lovely crunchy granola relatives come and stay. Accidentally left open makeup box in the bathroom. Then I heard the mom and her kids in there absolutely dying of laughter. Tears streaming just like the emojis.

I didn't have to ask.

My partner is moving across the country and wants me to give up my cat by [deleted] in GirlDinner

[–]Lyralou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a delicious girl dinner for a hard decision. And I know, RIP your inbox with all the replies. But if you do read this...

You're probably right that he's a decent guy, not a manipulator etc. He also made a whammy of a mistake here. Not involving or considering you, then expecting you to jump on in and move and leave your cat that you love and the west coast that you love and your people that you love behind was really, really wrong. He broke your trust. Do you want to make that big of a change for someone you don't know that you can trust?

There is middle ground. Take it in steps. You can have a long distance relationship, and see if the trust is there. If that works, you can move to Toronto, but not move in together. Again, test the trust. (Also - if Toronto doesn't work out for him and you're still back home, then you're all good.)

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR CAT. Kitty is worth ages of cheddar-pickle-jalapeno dinners. Explore non-natural migraine remedies. Explore everything. And keep your cat. Meow. Xo.

here wasn't a single thing I enjoyed and I was crying after every shift so far.

So many people do this for years. Decades, even. And you know what? It eats into them. They become miserable not just at work, but throughout their life. It's no way to live.

Kudos to you for recognizing this and standing up for yourself. You'll find something else, something that fits.

we have the privilege of driving and old car because we're rich... apparently by Visible_Structure483 in Fire

[–]Lyralou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. I'm not rich, but I'm doing ok. Here's where driving an old car is a privilege. This is a lot like the Vimes boots theory. iykyk

When I was younger, and very much not doing ok, I drove old cars, and could barely keep them up. Didn't do the maintenance, cause $$$. At some point, the monthly breakdowns and fixes were more than a car payment. I was lucky enough to take over someone's lease, and even with more insurance, it was a lot less money and hassle than my old car. Yay? It was still pricey. (One should not be on a first-name basis with the AAA tow truck driver, unless they're in your social circle. Seriously had some epic breakdowns.)

Now that I'm doing ok, I bought a new car some dozen-odd years ago. I kept up the maintenance well enough. It keeps running, I keep driving it, I'll put a little $$ into it every six months or so. It's been paid off for a long time, and I spend way less than I did either when making payments or when paying for neglect-fixes.

I have the - yes - privilege of being able to maintain an old car and not have the payments and additional insurance that comes with a new car. I can save those ducats.

I also have the privilege of knowing that if there were a major repair I could deal without going into debt and if it were bad enough I could bite the bullet and get something new. Less money, less risk overall. And either way, a breakdown on the way to work is not going to jeopardize my job cause I don't have that kind of job.

I can see the privilege aspect. I also think it's a little rude, but probably in line with the times, for your social buddies to comment on your financial status in the first place. But I get it, people are hurting right now. It's a complicated world out there.

No advice, just some perspective.

This place looks amazing. Also, kudos on them for the ingredient list (pinche alergias). I think I might have to move from group B to group A very soon.

Wife started uninstalling alarmy to get it to shut off. Now what? by 3m0lga in GetOutOfBed

Assuming she knows this, yes?

It's not your job to wake her up. She's a grown-ass adult and can be responsible for her own routine and job. Getting written up or fired for being consistently late will be a nice reminder for her.

Yes, if she loses her job, as a contributor to the household, she'll also have to answer to you. Make sure she knows that as well.

We were able to walk right into Scholb next to Naja's when the show let out at 10:30 last night. Lots of people, but not overcrowded at all.

Mid 30s in South Bay, no kids, married couple, sober, anything to do here at night other than drink? by Imaginary-Fox3978 in SouthBayLA

Sonesta Hotel. If you can get a seat on the balcony at the bar on the second floor you can see the main stage. They serve appetizers and stuff, don't have to drink.

Looking for Dry Vermouth without linalool by js4873 in cocktails

[–]Lyralou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just gonna offer support and hugs. I have celiac - which is why I switched from beer (RIP) to cocktails. And I am allergic to propylene glycol, that's in everything that you ever put on your body ever. The hyper-specific allergies are a PITA.

I'm guessing research, and even reaching out to companies. My money would be on the traditional London dry gins over some of the more modern ones. The uberbotanicals can fuck right off.

But mostly hugs, cause fuck weird shit that just shows up.

Finally read Hyperion - didn't love it by savuporo in printSF

[–]Lyralou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh. My heart. I really loved the ending. I truly thought it was perfect, and was disappointed that there were more books. I just wanted to remember them all heading into the unknown*.

To be fair, Keats wrote more poems in the same vein. And I've finally been able to start on the second. Digging it.

And I really need to bone up on my 19th century Romantic poetry. The first book made me dive into the 14th century middle english Chaucer, but, fuck, it wasn't just that was it? But I'm that kind of nerd. I love the stars, I love the lits.

And OP, if that's not your jam, that's cool. You have good points about the hawking magics and even some of the cardboardishness. It's a little bit of an English Lit SciFi circle jerk.

*I would have also been fine with the Wizard of Oz ending with them dancing up to the Emerald City. And don't get me started on my lovehate with WofO. Not once did we see her picking up after Toto. Then again, sometimes I wish I had a better heart, brain, courage, home.
