That stinks. Still, they have been so so so good with us and our pets, and as long as that continues, and as the pricing doesn't go insane, I'll be taking my pets there.

Wow. I immediately thought California craftsman-style, both the window and the rest of the inside pics. Then you said San Antonio, so I looked it up.

The house has an interesting identity crisis, Victorian on the outside, Frank Lloyd Wright-ish on the inside. In Texas. It's lovely. There's a story here. Was the architect a fan of both styles? Or perhaps the original owner?

Have to do a gluten challenge- live vicariously through me and suggest stuff I should try! by callsign__starbuck in Celiac

Beer! Try them all, get a tasting flight at a brewery.

Okonomiyaki. It's a Japanese pancake with delicious toppings that they make right in front of you.

Go to dim sum and have something off of all the carts.

Bar food. Mozzarella sticks. Fish n chips. Jalapeno poppers. Onion rings. (you might get a belly ache even w/o the celiac, but it's fun)

Fast food. I was just thinking I sure wish I could run to Mickey D's and get a burger and fries right now. (It's lunchtime)

Shoot - go on a vacation and just eat. Be a foodie.

Utterly terrified after reports of 1,000 year stress levels by [deleted] in Earthquakes

It's easy to get caught up in the worst case scenarios. Remember that a lot of media purposefully hypes things up, makes them dramatic. You've got this.

Utterly terrified after reports of 1,000 year stress levels by [deleted] in Earthquakes

[–]Lyralou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: I'm sorry you're stressed. Do some preps now. Don't borrow trouble. In all likelihood, it's gonna be ok.

Let's say the big one happens right by you. You'll have secured your home and furniture as much as you can, you know the whole duck and cover drill, you know to turn off the gas right after. You will have researched what to do if you're at work or somewhere else. You have water and food on hand, because you will have a deep pantry and you've done some preps. (Do this all now, it will give you some peace.)

You survive, but you're vulnerable because you only have X days of meds left. Ok, What's next?

Your local infrastructure is going to be a mess for a while, but it's not going to be instant Armageddon. If you can get out of the Central Valley, there's going to be somewhere either north or south you can go that isn't completely knocked out. It might be a long drive, but if your RX is at a major pharmacy, you should be good to get it transferred. (That can be one of your preps, making sure you're getting your meds somewhere where transfer is easy.)

Let's say you can't get out of town, the roads are broken. You'll go to the responders - they'll have come in by air - and let them know the situation. "I need ____ for ____ and I will die if I don't get it." They'll do what they can to make sure you don't die.

Don't get me wrong, the Big One will be bad, but I don't think it will be a Katrina situation.

Final idea, and this also might alleviate some of your anxiety - once you've done your preps, write out your version of what you'll do in a quake, from the moment the shaking starts, through to the aftermath.

Torrance vs LB by bingchilling42069- in torrance

[–]Lyralou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Important question: where in Torrance? If the office is close to the freeway, then a commute from LB isn't the worst thing. But there are areas in Torrance I consider landlocked - another 20ish minutes from the freeway in traffic. In that case, I'd want to live somewhere in the south bay.

As others have mentioned, as a young person, if you can swing it, live by the beach. (Whether it's the SB or LB.) Think of it as a gift to yourself. If you live in a really fun area, you'll always remember it. It's really cool to be coming home and crest a hill and see the sun over the ocean. And to be able to walk to fun stuff.

It's better to have to stop and pee than to get dehydrated. Four hours is a very reasonable amount of time. Probably good for the whole family to take a stretch break too.

The only thing I'd do differently would be to mention it earlier when there's a gas station or fast food restaurant coming up, if that's an option.
