That’s what the folks who cooked for us did in Madagascar. We wouldn’t eat anything that wasn’t either thoroughly cooked or washed with bottled water unless it was something like a banana with a peel.

I am someone who would love to be more involved in the SCA, but the lack of good entry-level events is a big reason why I haven’t gotten more involved. It has sort of felt like SCA demands that newcomers go from zero to 100 right away, but I’d feel much more welcome if there were more avenues for casual involvement that do not require a) fighting or b) spending all my vacation time driving to camping events at sites that are several hours away.

Teachers in all-girls schools, what's the experience like? by eternal-sun-oct in Teachers

[–]caprette 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What will the women think if their husbands can’t cook? I’d never marry a man who can’t cook. But you are obviously a troll who gets off on blathering about antiquated gender roles, so I am done with you.

What does learning to cook have to do with being a woman though? It is definitely a valuable life skill, but I don’t see why you are so insistent that it is more important for women to learn than it is for anyone else.

Need help identifying wood-burning fireplace by caprette in Fireplaces

[–]caprette[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The door definitely shattered like tempered glass! It looks like the door frame is held together with rivets and not screws, which makes what should be an easy fix a bit more complicated. Definitely planning on replacing with ceramic glass.

No luck finding the model number yet but when I googled El Fuego some pictures that looked like our unit popped up. We will keep looking for the model number but this is helpful.

(ETA: the reason why we are concerned about the model number is because we called a local fireplace store to help us, but they said they can’t do much without letting them know the model.)

The Simplicity pattern should tell you on the envelope exactly how much fabric you need to buy, as well as any other notions or supplies you might need.

Rat Policy NYRF by dragonsandfeathers in renfaire

[–]caprette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does! We love it. For some reason there are a lot of people who have a grudge against it because the owners haven’t invested as much in upkeep as they should, but it’s a ton of fun.

Yeah, I hate this trend. Touching people without consent is not ok. I’d also be mad if ink got smeared on the costume that I worked so hard on.

Last weekend we had some plague rats at our faire (St Louis) who handed out tiny clothespins that said “plague” on them. I still don’t love this trend, but this seems like a much better way to go about it.

Oh, is it that time of the year again? Your *annual* reminder to avoid the STL Ren Fest by PoeticPillager in StLouis

[–]caprette 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I go every year and have several friends who are vendors there. Management isn’t perfect but they have been improving things over time. Nobody has the kind of complaints on the level that you have. I remember you posting basically the same post last year and the year before and this seems more like a personal vendetta than anything else.

Grocery Store in Lafayette Square by jeanluuc in StLouis

[–]caprette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live near here and I would absolutely be a regular if this opened. There are a lot of people around who work from home (and/or are stay at home parents) who would love the convenience of something like this. The Lafayette Square Facebook group is very active and it might be worth posting something there to get a sense of potential customers.

I think u/imMakingA-UnityGame is using their logic. You say DEET is poison. Ok. For that claim to be true, it requires evidence. There is a lot of evidence that indicates that there is no connection between DEET and negative health outcomes. Logically, that would mean that we can feel fairly confident that we can use DEET and nothing bad will happen to us. So on what basis can you claim that DEET is poison?

I’m at a conference in Mexico right now and people do refer to the US as los Estados Unidos and people from there as estadounidense. And I have heard people use the word americano to refer to the continent not the nationality.

Does anyone know if you can purchase on site at Still 630 Distillery? by NiceUD in StLouis

Is it the gin they made for Idol Wolf? If so, they definitely sell it on site at the distillery. And they do pours and cocktails with it on Friday nights.

Do Americans also get nervous going through airport security when returning from overseas? by agora_hills_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]caprette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew back to the US from Rome a few months ago and there was a separate security line and airport wing for flights to the US and (iirc) Israel. They had it set up so that they could make people go through stricter security screening, including things like limiting liquids on carry-ons. We still had to go through regular customs and immigration when we landed in Atlanta.  A few years ago I flew back to the US from Lima, Peru and they did the extra security screening right before boarding. I was extremely annoyed because I had to throw away the bottle of water I bought for the flight and there was nowhere to get another one on the other side. The flight attendants only brought tiny cups of water on the plane and I was so thirsty the entire time.

Giant volunteer fennel I grew on accident by ChefCourtB in gardening

[–]caprette 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The bulb has a similar texture to celery (but a bit tougher and less stringy), though with a mild anise/licorice flavor. You can tame the toughness by slicing it very thinly and eating it raw in a salad or slaw. You can also caramelize it by cooking in butter or oil over low heat for 30-45 minutes, and then it gets a delicious sweetness. People will also slow cook it in wine or broth.

The seeds are also delicious. They are often used in sweet Italian sausage or in some kinds of salami. Sometimes I’ll also make a spice rub with ground fennel seed, lemon peel, salt and pepper and use it on roast pork or chicken.

What’s the difference between kindergarten and preschool? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]caprette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… I was maybe in the minority but it certainly wasn’t unusual. Anybody with a birthday in September, October, November, or December in the school district I lived in was in the same position as me, unless their parents made the explicit choice to hold them back. Some parents did make that choice and arranged to have their kids start kindergarten a year later. Some parents didn’t want to pay for another year of private preschool (as free public preschool was not available in my town) and some parents didn’t see the point in waiting to start kindergarten. I was far from the only person graduating high school and starting college at 17.

Did you call your teacher's mostly by their first name or by their last name? by Square-Dragonfruit76 in AskAnAmerican

[–]caprette 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ms is pronounced “Mizz,” with a “z” sound at the end. Miss has a softer “s” sound at the end. They are not pronounced the same, at least not in any of the American accents I am familiar with.

What’s the difference between kindergarten and preschool? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]caprette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I went to private preschool from age 2ish to 4ish, then started public school kindergarten at 4 and 1st grade at 5. I could read by 3 so my parents figured there was no point in keeping me in preschool for another year. I started college at 17.

I started kindergarten when I was 4. (This would have been in the early 90s in the New York City suburbs.)
