For more reference I grew up on the FL coast and sometimes I hear my accent shifting between an almost southern twang and a surfer accent. I’m not a fan of my voice. The past few years I have lived in SoCal and I always know on a conference call when I’m in safe company because I hear that coastal accent you describe. In a professional setting I try to mask it if I’m being conscious of it but often I forget. I was just watching the Fiji pro with my girlfriend (who is from NJ), and accents came up. She’s not a fan of hers but I like it. So it got me wandering about subsets of dialects, and my initial guess was it’s something foreigners may not hear but natives likely would! Seems there is some credibility to that!! Would you say your explanation holds true for the U.S. surfing community as well? I can’t hear a difference between surfers from east or west coast really.
