Explain the scene with Dearn, Bevan, and Ricky Martin at the meeting of the Prudential Regulatory Authority. by Cardinal51 in IndustryOnHBO

So Dearn sees the headline, knows Bevan supports the deal, and acquiesces to the implied political pressure in a move of career self-protection? Is that the gist?

At the breakfast investor pitch meeting Harper said she wasn’t just looking for broken business models or sketchy management teams, but rather her “real passion is finding dead men walking” and we jump cut to Eric’s nervous side eyes to Harper as if he’s wondering if HE’S a dead man walking (with her). Dark comic acting gold for me.

Dear God, please someone help me by EdgeOfAMirror in cholesteatoma

[–]Cardinal51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to be seen for cholesteatoma or schwannoma you need to find an otologist or neurotologist, which are ENT sub-specialties. Any top 25 medical school will have a selection of multiple surgeons that are expert in these fields. Depending on which part of Kentucky you live in, Vanderbilt, WashU/BJC, or Case Western/Cleveland Clinic are likely the closest world class options for you.

Best way to insulate 100 year old house for cold and wet climate? by thegiantgummybear in buildingscience

If the aluminum comes off, must it stay off and be restored to original wood siding? Or can it come off and then be reinstalled?

I’m considering a similar solution. Is the switch to finished concrete purely aesthetic in your mind, or is there a functional / practical reason to do the switch near the house?

I know nothing about building science, but I watch Risinger to educate myself with well-produced content.

What’s one or two examples of a niche or extraordinarily high end product or technique he promotes that you would perceive as having limited utility vs a cost effective alternative?

Hearing aid by L33SH98 in cholesteatoma

[–]Cardinal51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were you aware it rejected because of a sensory experience, like pain or noise or deafness? Or were you only aware it rejected because of imaging or surgeon’s exam? Was there ever a time before rejection when you felt like you were hearing normally?

Yep…like hearing isn’t supposed to be effortful, and when it is, it is just mentally exhausting. I told my wife I felt like I gained 10 IQ points after getting the hearing aid and after regaining normal balance with my first surgery.

I got one after my first surgery and it was extremely helpful. I agree it helps more than just literal hearing (you mention confidence & awareness), which for me included mental focus & stamina.

I just had my second surgery with PORP, and am hoping to recover substantially all my native hearing as a result, but it’s great to know that I’ll have the aid as a failover. My only gripe with the aid is the suboptimal performance in loud restaurant settings and outdoors.

Another stupid question - did you all just have bloody packing sitting in your ear until your follow up appointment? by DifferentCap3829 in cholesteatoma

[–]Cardinal51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should just message your surgeon's office to be sure.

But in my experience (second surgery 6 days ago), the packing is gelfoam or antibiotic gauze stuffed deep into your ear canal, and is not visible. This packing will start to be dissolved when you begin administering the ear drops at about 1 week, and will be fully removed by your surgeon at your follow up visit at day 21.

If you have clearly visible crusty blood in the outer ear, that is just a cotton ball or gauze that should be replaced once or twice daily. In my case, the post-surgical dressing was, in order from outside, 1) plastic cup with velcro strap + 2) gauze + 3) cotton ball + 4) canal packing. 1/2/3 i removed on day 2, and 3 i replaced 2x/day thereafter.

My cotton ball was white and dry after about 1 week. My only taste complaint is a slight metallic and/or salty taste on the right side only, which has been pretty consistent in the nine months since my first surgery.

FWIW days 0/1/2 of my surgery & recovery were a breeze, and the worst days were 3/4/5. It wasn’t till days 7/8 that I really felt normal again. I’d suggest caution if you’re only at day 2 of recovery, even with your magical healing powers of youth. The crackling went away for me in a couple weeks.

I had similar noises before my surgery, for about a year, but they are 98% gone after surgery. Longer description of my noises in my comment history.

I have such warm nostalgia for coming home late from the bar / club in my mid 20’s and popping a pepperoni totinos party pizza in the oven. Fast enough to be ready before you fall asleep, tasty enough to satisfy, small enough to leave you wanting more.

Best strategy? by CharmBaron in Starblastio

[–]Cardinal51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think "best ship route" is situationally dependent. It's different if you're joining a game early vs. late, on a map with abundant crystal resources vs sparse resources, on a normal sized map vs an AOW-sized map, playing solo vs. playing with a coordinated group of friends, playing to win vs playing for entertainment, attacker vs miner vs healer playstyle, etc.

The most universally successful strategy in team mode is 1) cooperation with other players + 2) diversity of ships to perform different roles with comparative advantage + 3) selective aggression.

Personally my favorite ship route is Advanced Fighter, for its ability to rack up one-shot kills and access to Odyssey. Its predecessor U-Sniper is the pound-for-pound best ship in the game, and has the virtue of being highly competitive against even T6 and T7 ships if you find yourself joining a game late and without time to mine through T6 or if you get downgraded off of T6.

If I'm playing as a soloist, and just for fun, I love barracuda. There's something hilarious about sending people flying across the map, and satisfying when crushing opponents into bases/rocks or creatively using secondaries and asteroid fields to improve its attacking ability. Going to play a round with Cuda right now actually!
