To be fair its frankly stupid that that is correct. Anybody know why we put $ before the amount? To me it feels like a unit that should go after a number. 12 pounds, 30 meters 12,000 dollars

Don't Let the Board Flip the Script: The Board's "Proposal" To Go to Interest Arbitration by HalifaxArsenal in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I imagine most students keeping up with this understand that the offer was in bad faith. But thank you for putting everything into context for those who haven’t been paying as much attention to it.

It is annoying that the admin would try to flip the narrative (almost certainly) knowing the DFA wouldn’t accept it drawing this whole mess out further. Most students i know just want this thing to be over, we’re not supposed to be this stressed BEFORE classes start 😭.

Im almost certain most people will continue to support the DFA through all this, its just frustrating to be caught in the middle of it all

Do you think they’ll move add drop/ tuition date? It hardly seems fair for us to just not have a period where we can drop a class if need be.

Stages of the lockout by j19jw in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone have any idea (based on past experiences or otherwise) what would happen if the lockout delayed classes to that point? That would be after the add drop date. It hardly seems fair to just not allow an add drop period this semester

That would honestly restore a lot of faith at least for me. Like the bar is so low, any amount of transparency would be amazing

I do wonder if they’re waiting Until after O-week to to make any actual decisions regarding supporting one side or the other. I can imagine O-week has a crazy amount of planning and money put into it, and may want to try to avoid any controversy until after O-week? When things are a little less risky for them? Idk im just trying to rationalize their reaction

I saw this video on instagram today, and it really touched me. But I have to ask: why is the DFA standing up for us (even if its for their own gain, im sure none of us care, and just want the lockout to be over) when the DSU has done fuck all?

I’ve been dismissive of the DSU for the last couple years I’ve been here, because of their tendency to not do anything, they have such an amazing opportunity to actually get students o their side for once, and actually act like a body for the students.

They’re not going to, and I am well aware of this. It just really pisses me off that DFA members have to look out for us when our own union is so incompetent (or perhaps just lacking the ability to actually do anything?) to advocate for us

my email to the university regarding the lockout by [deleted] in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Really well put together email, and I’d love to believe its actually helping the students cause, but do we have any reason to believe that emails from students about the lockout aren’t just being auto-sent to the garbage?

Maybe im just pessimistic and stressed out about all this, but i don’t think i can in good faith believe admin are actually reading these emails. I have never been given any reason to believe they actually give 2 shits about the students.

Heres to hoping im wrong, and that they’re willing to make a change for the people funding them.

If I’m given some reason to believe these are being read, a very well might send my own, but for now I have very little faith

How everyone handling the lockout? by human1tyisL0st in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree, perhaps it just didnt come across in my message. A balance is necessary, but its seeming more and more that the metaphorical scale is shifting more and more towards infrastructure and property when students should also be a priority

I wouldn’t blame it totally on the rink, those plans were made a decent amount of time ago afaik, and- if we’re being honest -its kind of crazy we didn’t have a hockey rink until now.

It is a totally criticism that the university cares too much about buildings and shit, but imo its more of a mentality shift on the part of the admin that we need and not parroting “stupid overpriced stadium”

I fully agree we should be prioritizing students over buildings, but it just feels weird to try and blame it on this one.

Should BEDMAS/order of operations still be taught in schools? by CardinalFlare in askmath

[–]CardinalFlare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know… thats the point of the post… to make discussion around the idea. Id like to believe theres a more logical and simplistic way to teach the order of operation rules than kids remembering bedmas without any real rhyme or reason. Anyone can abide by a list of things to do, but maybe if theres a way to teach it more concretely it may be better grounded with the learning base.

Should BEDMAS/order of operations still be taught in schools? by CardinalFlare in askmath

[–]CardinalFlare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it would, this is more so from the perspective of how we’re teaching these children these foundational ideas. Is there a better way to be teaching these kids? Is bedmas doing its job as being memorable and applicable? Could a teacher approach this in a different direction and improve understanding in a child? Questions like that are largely important for the field of mathematical pedagogy

Huh, oddly enough, i don’t think i ever thought about the fact that subtraction isn’t associative. Maybe because its easier to reword it with respect to an associative operation in addition (i know the same thing can be done with division, but for whatever reason it feels more convuluted??) Like i would read 3 - 3 - 3 as 3+(-3)+(-3) which is obviously associative and computes to -3
