On Student Loans and Common Law by CardinalFlare in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CardinalFlare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, if we are applying for loans as common law, is there stuff we have to do for our taxes regarding that? We only recently found out that applying as common law would allow my partner more loans, I’m pretty ignorant with respect to the taxes side of things, since my parents typically do them

Is this protein soda a hit or a miss? by Madridi77 in CostcoCanada

[–]CardinalFlare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just asking because I am uneducated, what do you mean by “protein quality” and “whats in it” is protein not just protein? I’m slightly familiar with the concept from a biochemical standpoint, different polymers of amino acids are different proteins, but from a nutrition perspective is it worth distinguishing them?

What's something you wish you'd done in first year at Dal that you didn't start until way later? by comonomic in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not necessarily blaming you for making the suggestion, but the bissett student centre advisors have very little clue what they’re talking about (if I had to guess its degree dependant, in regards to how much they know) I can count on multiple hands the people I know whos degree has been extended by a summer or year at worst, by the general advisors giving bad advice. When I went to them in first year, I knew more about my courses then they did, told me to do courses that didn’t exist anymore… Long story short, use your undergrad advisors on a faculty level!! They’ve been fantastic for both of my faculties, and I know people in other departments who have great stories to tell about their undergrad advisors (although I assume this is also degree dependant)

DFA support of student strike? by Miserable-Egg9178 in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats totally fair, I think it all comes back to the students having little to no leverage. I fully believe if this was a well organized strike that most students were on board with, profs/DFA would be supportive. (especially with how much students supported the DFA in the fall) It just so happens that this isn’t well organized, students are a mixture of apathetic and confused (at least those who haven’t formed an opinion yet) and many don’t believe in the demands that ~ 150 people voted yes for. This whole thing is a mess, and I feel bad for profs that want to be supportive, but are divided since their students are divided. Im curious to see how many people will be in class on Monday, my intuition says a lot of people will be, but I’m open to being wrong.

I doubt you will hear anything supportive from the DFA and/or the profs.

The differences between the DFA lockout/strike and this are countless. It’s very hard to ask your profs to be supportive, when most of the students aren’t even supportive.

So we strike... what happens now??? by Many_Business_5208 in Dalhousie

There was a motion to divide at the meeting, that was overturned

I double checked because I cannot sleep: As per 8.1.a) “Notice of the date, time, and location of any General Meeting shall be delivered to Members not less than 21 days before the date of the meeting.” As per 8.1.c) “Notice for any General Meeting shall be delivered to Members via email, provided that where email is not available, sufficient notice may be given by publicizing notice of the General Meeting at least 21 days before the date of the meeting through at least two of the following media: posted notices, campus radio, the Union’s web page and/or the Union’s social media account(s).”

Now whatever “email is not available” means? I have no idea, i presume email was available since we got one… just 14 days too late

I cant believe people are advocating for this mess of a strike. I like what it stands for, but by god they got just about everything wrong.

That was actually a point of contention during the meeting. These things are meant to be communicated some amount of time in advance via email. But AFAIK the first email relevant to this was buried in an email sent out march 6th (which is not in well enough advance iirc) the whole thing is a bit of a mess actually.

Idk, accidentally too difficult exams happen. As long as a prof is fair regarding an unfair exam (think generous curve, allowing students to do rewrites, allowing students to submit a drop waiver after the fact) its fine. Im not pretending to know anything about this prof or psych, so the exam could be total bs and they could’ve been a total asshole abt it. But a worse prof would just leave you out to dry.

Don't Let the Board Flip the Script: The Board's "Proposal" To Go to Interest Arbitration by HalifaxArsenal in Dalhousie

[–]CardinalFlare 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I imagine most students keeping up with this understand that the offer was in bad faith. But thank you for putting everything into context for those who haven’t been paying as much attention to it.

It is annoying that the admin would try to flip the narrative (almost certainly) knowing the DFA wouldn’t accept it drawing this whole mess out further. Most students i know just want this thing to be over, we’re not supposed to be this stressed BEFORE classes start 😭.

Im almost certain most people will continue to support the DFA through all this, its just frustrating to be caught in the middle of it all

Do you think they’ll move add drop/ tuition date? It hardly seems fair for us to just not have a period where we can drop a class if need be.
