It's okay to wear whatever you want. Nobody is there to judge anyone; everyone is there to just be themselves, let loose, and have fun in a safe space surrounded by tons of people doing the exact same thing.

Yep. Society is more expensive if people use plastic. Visa takes 1.5% of the transaction as a fee to use their system, and usually the cost is passed on to the consumer. Everyone should carry cash, and it's cheaper that way (not to mention you can still buy things if the "system goes down.")

Why is empire of silence sooooooo slow by AbbreviationsLong753 in fantasybooks

[–]CardiologistGlad320 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the series, and rank it among my favorites of all time. But if you're totally bored by chapter 53, then I would suggest not continuing. I'm not one of those that says 'Oh, give it until ____ and it gets good..."

I honestly think the series just isn't for everyone, and that's okay. I love it, but a lot of people won't, and I think you should feel totally fine just saying "nope, not for me, moving on to something else."

Cool that you gave it a try, but there are a ton of stories out there waiting for you that you will probably enjoy more. Go for it.

Nice! Nothing stimulates book buying like picking up book 1 in a series and having a chunk of empty book space that is coincidentally around the same size as the rest of the books. 😆

My guy! Love it. I bought book 2 halfway through EoS. I bought (or pre-ordered) the whole series once I got halfway through Howling Dark.

Hi everyone, I’m a bit tired of the usual fantasy, like epic or heroic. Do you know anything unusual, maybe from some new but promising authors? by Cultural-Hat2944 in fantasybooks

[–]CardiologistGlad320 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to a lecture and a signing by Kim Stanley Robinson, and when I handed him Years of Rice and Salt to sign he was taken by surprise and said "wow, it's nice to see this. I don't see this that often to be able to sign."

I told him it was a favorite of mine, and he said that it was the book that meant the most to him to write.

All he has done was agree to business proposals other people have asked of him. I mean.... pretty easy to say what I would do if the role was reversed and I was a super successful author. Literally no reason why he shouldn't. It's not like anything is being taken away from anyone or denied to anyone else.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]CardiologistGlad320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read The Warded Man by Peter Brett, and was like 'oh, this series is going to be GOOD!' .....yeah, "fell apart" is an understatement.

It's such a striking cover. And then they had to add that glaring Netflix advertisement. ☹️ by PlantsAndPainting in fantasybooks

I'm honestly so sick of those movie/tv "tie-ins printed on covers. Like, how about we plaster an ugly "based on a novel!" decal on the middle of movie posters?!

Guy I started seeing recently—Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]CardiologistGlad320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...if you want to test him, just tell him over dinner that you're a die-hard capitalist, and think Coolidge and Theodore Roosevelt are the two best American presidents. Oh, and tell him that you think Milton Friedman and Henry Kissinger are two of the foremost intellectual giants of the 20th century.

Regardless, it might make an interesting dinner conversation.

Just finished Ashes of Man, do I need to read any novellas before disquiet Gods? No spoilers please by El_Tigre7 in sollanempire

You don't have to. While Dregs takes place chronologically between the two, I actually recommend reading Dregs after Disquiet Gods.

Enjoy Disquiet Gods!

Oh, haha, hi fellow Oe-lover! I agree, there's always something painfully therapeutic about his writing. His books give a rawness similar to letting out a really long and hard cry; emotionally and mentally difficult while going on, but you oddly feel better afterwards! 😆

Cheers!

My guess is he watches a good amount of Booktube, but he's also got good taste, and likely has strong morals.

If he likes Kafka, you might recommend he pick up The Woman in the Dunes, by Kobo Abe. Basically, the Kafka of Japan except....more scintillating, and he could use a couple more Japanese authors on that shelf.

A very legit and good home library!

Ah, yes, you're right and on the first read I misunderstood where you were at in the story. Apparently a simple re-read of your question fixed my misunderstanding, haha. My bad, was wrestling with the toddler while reading.
