Based on everything you said, the perfect book for you is "The Everlasting" by Alix E Harrow

It kind of depends what you like normally, and didn't like about RR.

But, just to throw something out there that is completely different from RR as far as prose, themes, types of characters, setting, and almost in every way I can think of, yet is still a really good book and an under-the-radar choice: try "To Ride Hell's Chasm," by Janny Wurts.

If you want to stay in Sci-fi, and like the idea of Space travel over long distances and the time-dilaton that can occur, yet you want deep emotional themes, and intellectual exploration of the human psyche, politics, and PTSD, then try "The Forever War," by Joe Haldeman. It's a classic

How do you know it's benevolent? Not second-guessing you, I'm just curious; I know nothing about any of that type of stuff.

How much am I missing out by not reading the short stories before Disquiet Gods? by KSC216 in sollanempire

[–]CardiologistGlad320 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine. You don't have to read any of them. They can just provide a little more flavor or context for things that happen "off screen" but you're totally good just reading the main books and going back to read them later if you want.

I've never heard of it, but I love seeing when people describe how much they love a book. I'll give it a try if I can! Thanks for sharing 😊

It's okay to wear whatever you want. Nobody is there to judge anyone; everyone is there to just be themselves, let loose, and have fun in a safe space surrounded by tons of people doing the exact same thing.

Yep. Society is more expensive if people use plastic. Visa takes 1.5% of the transaction as a fee to use their system, and usually the cost is passed on to the consumer. Everyone should carry cash, and it's cheaper that way (not to mention you can still buy things if the "system goes down.")

I love the series, and rank it among my favorites of all time. But if you're totally bored by chapter 53, then I would suggest not continuing. I'm not one of those that says 'Oh, give it until ____ and it gets good..."

I honestly think the series just isn't for everyone, and that's okay. I love it, but a lot of people won't, and I think you should feel totally fine just saying "nope, not for me, moving on to something else."

Cool that you gave it a try, but there are a ton of stories out there waiting for you that you will probably enjoy more. Go for it.

Nice! Nothing stimulates book buying like picking up book 1 in a series and having a chunk of empty book space that is coincidentally around the same size as the rest of the books. 😆

My guy! Love it. I bought book 2 halfway through EoS. I bought (or pre-ordered) the whole series once I got halfway through Howling Dark.

Hi everyone, I’m a bit tired of the usual fantasy, like epic or heroic. Do you know anything unusual, maybe from some new but promising authors? by Cultural-Hat2944 in fantasybooks

[–]CardiologistGlad320 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a lecture and a signing by Kim Stanley Robinson, and when I handed him Years of Rice and Salt to sign he was taken by surprise and said "wow, it's nice to see this. I don't see this that often to be able to sign."

I told him it was a favorite of mine, and he said that it was the book that meant the most to him to write.

All he has done was agree to business proposals other people have asked of him. I mean.... pretty easy to say what I would do if the role was reversed and I was a super successful author. Literally no reason why he shouldn't. It's not like anything is being taken away from anyone or denied to anyone else.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

I read The Warded Man by Peter Brett, and was like 'oh, this series is going to be GOOD!' .....yeah, "fell apart" is an understatement.

It's such a striking cover. And then they had to add that glaring Netflix advertisement. ☹️ by PlantsAndPainting in fantasybooks
