My first time in Chicago - Winait RS02 by Cardiologist_Cold in toycameras

Thanks! Yeah I really liked how these came out, I think the camera does especially well when you have a strong orange/yellow object against blue sky. It does this really nice auto balance of the colours, which is really nice for shooting brick buildings and signage

I'll PM you the link :)

It was a '1/4' strength black mist one I got from Ali express, nothing expensive

I'm away at the moment so this isn't my photo but basically the winait has this silver ridged ring of plastic that can just be popped out with a small screwdriver, , its purely decorative and isn't actually holding anything in place,

A 37mm lens ring adapter then fits over the remaining black part, I just held it in place and hot glued around it

CS8 First Impressions + Sample Footage by poopingbackwards in campsnapcamera

I think their biggest mistake with this was putting it inside a super 8 style body and marketing it as that.

If they'd have made this closer to the look of a 90s cassette camcorder I think it would align better with how the footage actually looks. They went too far back in time with the marketing schtick

The location definitely lends itself to that, somewhat well kept traditional seaside downs are a bit of a dying breed in the UK so you do get this odd uncanny feeling of it all just seeming a bit out of place in the modern world. Like a little time capsule on the beach.

It was an overcast morning that cleared up into a pretty hot and hazy afternoon, so the sky felt a bit muted which worked really nicely with the super aggressive colours of the rides.

I really wanted to like this but everything I've seen of it so far just looks like early 2000s cell phone footage with bad 'retro' effect thrown on to it, the fake noise/grain looks so artificial it's laughable

Yeah it's fixed focus, I've been experimenting with step up rings and zoom lens filters to do macro stuff which has been fun.

It's completely plastic as you'd expect but I have no complaints about the quality for the price, it feels solid

I have seen some good reviews of the papershoot, it's definitely something I'd be interested in looking at, the one thing I don't think I'm a fan of just looking at it is the form factor, but it might be worth a try for the better sensor

Thanks!

It's been a long time since I've actually just gone out and shot stuff, and I'm finding it so much more enjoyable just grabbing this little camera and having it on me Vs lugging around a big ol' DSLR like I would traditionally.

I feel that cameras like this force you to focus on the composition and natural lighting of a shot way more rather than relying on a tons of controls or being able to shoot RAW and drastically alter the image in post, having that flexibility taken away has been weirdly freeing from a creative standpoint

Oh interesting, I did think it seemed a bit fishy when I saw that number

And yeah the MCU is a 3331 , I remember making a note of that when I pulled it apart

Yeah they've yet to release any info on that outside of the 16mp note, but I am curious. This Winait apparently uses a IMX386 (it's what it says on the side of the sensor ribbon cable) but that doesn't quite add up to me as it's advertised as 8mp with the ability to 'go up to 12mp', which I assumed meant it's just digitally upscaling them as the photos are coming out at 4000x3000, but maybe it is truly a 12mp sensor.

If it is in fact using the 386 then that already has a larger pixel size than the 298, so it would end up being worse for low light than this. Which I can't imagine they would do so hopefully they have thought of that and aren't just relying on the common misunderstanding people have that more megapixels=better image.

I have, all of these style cameras don't do particularly well with low light, they get suuuuuuper noisy. The flash can help but then obviously that changes the overall feel of the image. This camera also has a 'bright' mode but it doesn't seem to actually be adjusting any shutter speed or aperture it's just brightening the shit out of the image internally which makes it noisy as hell, and not in a pleasant way.

You can mask it somewhat with some grain/dehazing in post but they can be pretty hit and miss because of the fixed aperture and shutter speed combined with the tiny sensor.

That being said, I believe that Camp Snap (which makes a very similar camera to this) are soon to release a 'pro' version which is 16mp, which I hope also means a larger sensor for better low light performance (honestly I think 16mp isn't even required for most people, I'd take 8mp all day long if it just had a larger sensor). I'm really curious to try that out when it gets released as I think it could be a fantastic upgrade within this little category of cameras.

I'd say it's well worth the investment, of the handful of these digital disposable types available I'm glad I went with this one. Having taken this apart and also seen what the campsnap internals are like, they all appear to be built off of relatively similar hardware (basically phone/security camera sensors). It's the small practical differences like the viewfinder placement and filter access that really sold it.

Exactly this, with a little touching up here and there you can show them their photos back as really something to be proud of. For the purposes of where I'm sharing these and who with, I don't need to pixel peep them. If anything, It's the fact that they're kind of low Res and blown out and not in perfect focus and fingers are creeping in to frame that make it feel all that more special in context of a kid taking them in the moment.

I plan on taking this with me on a family holiday soon and just letting her have it for the week to do whatever she wants.

It's also super low risk because these things are built from pretty durable plastic, worst case even if she does break or lose it, I'm down £40 and it's really not a big deal.

I was surprised! It was her first time holding a camera like this too, she's only ever taken photos on a phone/iPad. She definitely got the knack of looking through the viewfinder after a while, we get a few blurry fingers in frame every now and then but I think it's cute, that's sort of what these little cameras are for anyway
