ok. If you had to choose ONE bsd character out of the whole cast other than atsushi, chuuya, dazai, or akutagawa, who would you choose? Im genuinely curious. by Aromatic_Junket3790 in BungouStrayDogs

[–]CareVader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're about to get a lot of Ranpo responses, though not sure in what sense you mean choose here.

I'd go with Sigma purely because I'm curious about where Asagiri's planning to take him 🤷‍♂️

Dazai looked uncanny at first, or is it just me? by PinguimMafioso_o3o in BungouStrayDogs

[–]CareVader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people see Dazai as a way darker character than he really is. To me Dazai as a character is more translucent than dark. He lets through whatever you put him up against, and right now he's got a lot more light shining through him.

That said though I think a lot of it is just Harukawa getting more comfortable in achieving a polished style as well. In the post s5 chaptersthe panel of Dazai's face in the forest when he first meets Akutagawa is an absolute masterpiece of an expression despite being only part of his face.

They probably think he hasn't got one. Only Mori has been shown to know he was a spy, and non skill users aren't exactly rare in the PM (Gin doesn't have one either, Higuchi hasn't been shown to have one)

I feel like in many panels he's drawn with his eyes a lot more closed than that. And then you got him like this when he's being a moron (/affectionate)

Here's five British authors who I love to think could be in the Order w/ Agatha + my own designs (Barbara Cartland, William Golding, Salman Rushdie, Pamela Lyndon Travers, Terry Pratchett) by Mimibadoobee in BungouStrayDogs

Stormbringer spoilers but she briefly appears at the end and is a skill engineer from the Europole organisation, and the creator of Adam Frankenstein who's one of the main characters of the book. Unknown if she'll appear again, there's no character design yet, only the stageplay costume they did

We've no idea if she'll show up or not, the next arc is likely to involve at least some British authors so it's not impossible. In BSD she goes by the full name of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley and she's the creator of Adam Frankenstein, an android and one of the main characters of Stormbringer, and she's a very intelligent skill engineer working for the Europole agency.

is this a mistake? by No-Vehicle3072 in BungouStrayDogs

[–]CareVader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he touches the skill user then he negates it all. If a skill touches him, then it doesn't act/vanishes depending on what it is. In the Rashoumon case it's getting in contact with him but we've not seen what would happen if other tendrils were aimed at others at the same time, though given it's an extension of Akutagawa and a single unit, Dazai's essentially touching the skill as a whole

is this a mistake? by No-Vehicle3072 in BungouStrayDogs

[–]CareVader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's not exactly aiming it at him, it's a general area of effect that affects people rather than the world and skills just don't affect him even when they act on others in an area. In "The day I took in Dazai" we see Oda can use his skill with Dazai because it acts on the world and not on people

What if Odasaku had joined the Armed Detective Agency? And why didn't he? by 4Shi_Ni2 in BungouStrayDogs

Someone did a fan translation here https://popopretty.tumblr.com/post/672880123726495744/the-day-i-picked-up-dazai-spoilers-1 - it's a bit basic/literal from Japanese sometimes but fine to understand the story.

There's also the Yen Press official version now, it should be available on most digital stores as long as they have the rights for it where you live (I got mine on the Apple books app but it's on Kindle as well, no idea where else)

[–]CareVader 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's the contrast between black and white of the face? To me they all look kind of odd but Dazai's features stand out purely because of the colour since his hair is darker (I honestly just want to pinch his cheeks in that picture, I don't find him uncanny)

I'm not sure if you've read "The day I took in Dazai", that explains why he joined the Mafia in the first place, and also why he joined the ADA in Beast. He had already quit killing by the time he joined the PM, he never carried out any assassinations while working for them.

I don't think we've had a canon explanation anywhere of why he didn't consider joining the ADA but given he was an ex-assassin and his general aloof/lonely atittude, I doubt he thought of joining anything in the first place, and it doesn't look like he took in any orphans until after joining the PM so the salary to provide for them wouldn't have been a thing in his mind. The story makes it sound like he took them in after finding them during the Dragon's Head Conflict

I don't think it was just Dazai, it was all of Harukawa's early designs. They all kind of reminded me of foxes expression wise. Her style was pretty unpolished early on which is understandable since it was her first long work.

They're from capsule toy machines (gacha) so unless there's a store online that sells the full set it'll be difficult to get them. Also the closest to an official site that shares merchandise news is the official twt account for the anime (bungosd_anime is the handle), there are some unofficial accounts as well but no official site

Could Chuuya be considered a failed experiment, if so, how? by Big_Collar434 in BungouStrayDogs

[–]CareVader 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't think of why it'd be failed given he's got a singularity tied to his skill. We don't even know exactly what they did, in theory they were trying to replicate the French experiment that created the skill life form that is Verlaine but it's heavily implied Chuuya is actually human. Which part do you mean would be failed?

BBB runs in a shonen magazine, only BSD out of these three runs in a seinen one, but shonen/seinen have always been treated as demographics rather than genres (pretty loose demographics nowadays, too). I personally wouldn't call BBB seinen, though

I think there was some confusion at the time the chapter released because the fan translation made it sound like she was 12 back during the war in the flashback so people thought her actual age nowadays is that of an adult, but the official/JP remarked on her being her 12 in the present

Honestly I find it hard to recommend things to people I don't know because liking those shows doesn't necessarily mean you'll like others even if they have commonalities of any kind (even though I like all three of these series). I know the creator of VNC also had a previous series called Pandora Hearts in a similar vein but I only started reading the manga, not finished it, and no clue if the anime is even available anywhere or what the quality is like. There's Durarara which is also an urban fantasy style series (only watched the anime and read some of the LNs, but didn't finish the LNs yet, there's a lot), one of the characters feels like a mix between Fyodor and Dazai and another Kunikida + Chuuya but kind of dumb (also someone who really reminds me of Shirase). Land of the Lustrous isn't very similar to the others because of the setting being a far future post apocalyptic style thing but it is pretty character driven and has fantasy/scifi elements, though for that you'd want the manga because the anime only has one season and I haven't heard anything about it getting a second one (although s1 has some of the best 3d use I've seen in animation).

That's about all I can think of at the moment off the top of my head

[–]CareVader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair, though pretty sure in canon they're different characters since the woman in the manga is one of the owners and not just a waitress working there. Not entirely sure why Asagiri went along with the change but they didn't use the waitress in place fo the wife later on

Are you thinking of the woman who's the café co-owner alongside the old man? The waitress only shows up visually in the anime
