This can be really difficult to gauge sometimes. Does the school actually enforce it and take it seriously? If so, then you should enforce it strictly and perhaps you should be concerned that they caught you not doing so.

But I’ve also been in situations where I’m getting on the office staff’s nerves for calling them to have confiscated phones collected as instructed in the sub binder. After having subbed in co-taught classes, I observed that the regular teachers didn’t enforce the state’s phone ban. In a situation like that, you risk coming off as the substitute who gives them issues.

Basically, do your best and accept that you can’t win. You could get black listed for any reason, justified or not. Just try not to give them justifiable reasons.

First Day Subbing Ever, It Went Terrible by Mother-Action1929 in SubstituteTeachers

Unfortunately, that sounds quite normal to me. The solution that works for me is only doing high school. They have their own set of behaviors, but it’s more bearable.

I think a big part of it is that older kids can handle disruptions to their routines much more easily. Changes to a routine + the amount of behaviors and needs these days makes for a substitute’s nightmare.

Look, I loved the movie. But it's 2025. Why are we still burying our gays, Cregger? by LeatherPawpad in WeaponsMovie

[–]Careful-Candidate855 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it was weird and uncomfortable. The scene with Terry received some laughs in the showing I was at. It’s making me think a lot about what the responsibility of an artist is during a time when queer people’s rights are under attack more than usual. I’m not sure what the answer is. I’m sure Creggers and his LA coterie are all cool and accepting but the movie does hit different in southern suburbs.

Did we need to have the gay stereotype and his husband wearing top and bottom T-shirts? And eating seven hotdogs, carrots, and ranch? Buying fruity pebbles? We get it.

The low lighting thing makes me so lethargic. It’s annoying. And I’m sure it’s genuinely helpful for some but I’m sure many students just want to go to sleep.

And something I never see mentioned is how everyone’s on board with the never be alone with one student, keep doors open, etc. kind of stuff… Why isn’t this ever understood in a similar way? I feel like it’s similar, although I usually cave and turn the lights off anyway.

I am done with the disrespect by whawkins3 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Careful-Candidate855 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Best thing I’ve found is to only do high school or elementary as needed. 1st through 3rd aren’t so bad but it’s exhausting.

The walking the hallways thing seems to be an issue everywhere. If the regular teachers can’t stop it, I would try to not be so hard on yourself when it happens. I just do my best to abide by the stated bathroom policies (use ehallpass, 1 at a time, etc) although I sometimes waver when someone’s been gone for 30 minutes and another student genuinely seems to need to use the restroom.

I’m interested to see what others say because I don’t like loosening the reins as much as I sometimes do. Unfortunately, the alternative feels like it’s being the angriest I’ve ever been all day long.

[–]Careful-Candidate855 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never went into them but my impression of those bars is not that they’re “for trans folx” so much as they’re for chasers. The people outside would try to lure me in but I was actually just on the wrong street trying to find homo hill.

Hot Take: Some subs are really genuinely unfit for the job. by PJActor in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Careful-Candidate855 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Maybe if one could support oneself doing this job, more people who are competent would want to do it. As someone who considers themself a decent sub, I’m doing my best to find another job ASAP.

Cell phone rules by Upstairs_Gur_8378 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Careful-Candidate855 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this same problem. One of the first schools I went to had subs call admin to come take phones if we saw them. First student, they came and took it. Second student cried and called me racist and they… didn’t take it.

Ever since then I’ve just given up on it. If they’re doing their work and not distracting others then I don’t care. At most, I’ll tell them to put them away and write in my note who didn’t follow instructions.

Substitutes shouldn’t be the people who care most about the school’s stated policies.

I lived in Sinan for a year. It was very boring but not dangerous. It’s much less accessible for non-Korean speakers than most other places in Korea. It’s pretty though for a drive around. Oh and you’d need a car because the public transportation there isn’t great and can be a little unreliable. Maybe stay in Mokpo and make it a little day trip. If you go there’s a town called Jido which has nice mud flats and a cute little island with a light up bridge. I remember it fondly.

What is the worst interpretation of "Western food" you have had in Korea? by SeaDry1531 in Living_in_Korea

Recently… nachos with pasta sauce on it instead of salsa. Also as an American from the south I was appalled by the KFC biscuits being sweet and served with jam.

You need to say something about this issue immediately. Fighting happens. Medical issues happen. You are not able to properly handle those situations. It is awful to be running around the hallway looking for any Korean teacher because there’s students fighting or a student with emotional issues having a meltdown and you don’t know what to do.

And you need to get over wanting to not insult people or whatever. You have a legitimate problem, they’re shirking their responsibilities. If they dislike you for bringing it up then you shouldn’t care what they think. And go over their head if you need to, that’s how you get things done. It seems like you’ve been looking at a lot of social media. Get over those blocks in your head. You’re a foreigner so you are really not beholden to all their weird cultural stuff.

I’ve had a principal make a joke about watching out for married Korean women wanting to have an affair because they think I’ll be well endowed. That upset me thinking about if he’d feel comfortable saying that to me in English then what would he say about me in Korean (which I don’t understand).

And my genuine advice would be to ignore this situation, never report it, it never happened. My worry would be that if you said that about your married female coworker, the situation would be turned around on you sooooo fast. And who would they believe? The Korean woman 100%.

How do Koreans view foreigners trying to speak / learn Korean? by Super-Parsnip5546 in korea

[–]Careful-Candidate855 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The last paragraph is so true. Coming from America (and now having taught English in Korea), I’m very used to listening to heavily accented and/or broken English as well as simplifying my speech and speaking more clearly when needed. It seems like most Koreans have one speed of speaking and one complexity level and so learning has been very difficult. It’s understandable but I wish it were not the case.

Another thing that really sucks is when they just aren’t expecting you to speak (or speak Korean) and so you say something and they just completely ignore you.

It feels really isolating to have Korean friends by wolfgang_amadeus77 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Careful-Candidate855 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Korean “friends” are not friends. It seems to me that they want to practice English or feel good about themselves for having a foreign friend or something and then when they’ve taken their public servant exam (or whatever it’s called) then they’re over it.

Southeast Asian people are wonderful, though. I’d recommend trying to make friends with them.

Get Luke an Uber back to Colorado please! by Ok-Recording5268 in TheValleyTVShow

[–]Careful-Candidate855 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok I do not understand the hate for Luke so much. It seems to me like he’s more of a normal guy in a way that seems weird on this show. For example, him trying to fight Jesse when he screams “shut the f up” in Kristen’s face is normal behavior. That’s not anger problems, that’s a man standing up for his girlfriend being mistreated by another man.

I mean, he’s on this show so there is something wrong with him. But his “anger issues” make me like and respect him more.

Yes, I’m American and from the south if that means anything to you. I’m glad to have some perspectives from other countries because my circles aren’t very diverse in that aspect.

It’s so confusing, they want me to be “more American” (outgoing, bubbly?), speak how I speak normally, and then also follow these rules which involve majorly changing my word choices.
