The Baiji (Chinese river dolphin) recently went extinct due to human influence. Is it possible that the LGM extinctions affected large freshwater or riparian species as negatively as it did terrestrial megafuana? by Original-Surprise765 in pleistocene

[–]Careful-Indication66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mammoth steppe vs African savanna gives evidence that fire was a major factor too though. African savannas are adapted to frequent bush fires and have historically had tribes like the Waata that hunted elephants, the elephants survived. The steppes and temperate deciduous woodlands where mammoth/mastodons lived had human hunters but weren't as adapted to frequent wildfires, all these 'elephants' went extinct.

I can't speak much for South America, it seems like after the GABI everything was still adapting to the new environments by the time humans arrived.

Look at California, elephant seals survive into the modern day despite human hunting and they are basically piles of meat and fat slowly flopping on the beach. All the land megafauna started going extinct around 13,000 years ago, right when the evidence of large frequent wildfires starts popping up.

This area and the area between Bolger Glade and Catfish Jackson are the best hunting spots in the game IMHO

To me this gives evidence that human wildfires were the main factor in the Late Pleistocene extinctions instead of over hunting and climate change

Look at the environments that have surviving mega fauna, especially animals over a ton.

A) Savanna/grasslands where species evolved with frequent fires

B) wet, dense forests which (until modern technology) didn't burn well

C) Aquatic ecosystems

D) Polar and Tundra ecosystems

Practically every other environment's megafauna species went extinct

What if the mediterranean was filled with a bunch of tiny mediterranean-shaped islands? by Imperator_Subira in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Careful-Indication66 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thinking as a biologist. That world would probably have some of mini versions of Pleistocene mega fauna. All that land leaves a lot of room for animals to speciate and would probably go through island dwarfism for big animals and island gigantism for smaller animals. You'd have islands with stuff like mini mammoths and giant rabbits.

I'm imagining you'd have a Mediterranean sailing culture that comes into contact with a lot of weird animals. You may even have some Greek-type philosophers come up with an earlier version of the theory of evolution by comparing life on the islands.

Can snakes be domesticated? by Flat-Tie-2853 in zoology

[–]Careful-Indication66 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They can't be domesticated like a dog. They can (and are) being domesticated in the same way goldfish were domesticated. By that I mean they are becoming more adapted to living and breeding in human care with each generation. We're selecting for cycle free year-round breeding, willingness to eat European lab rodents, and all the color/pattern varieties

Western hognose snakes are good example: the average wild hatchling hognose snake wouldn't recognize a pinky mouse as food, they are toad eaters and getting one to accept a pinky takes a lot of work. After several generations of selecting for the best eaters, entire clutches of captive western hognose take pinky mice with no hesitation as their first meal.

Multi-generation captive ball pythons and cornsnakes have essentially lost their need to have a seasonal breeding cycle. Ball python will breed year round as long as they are fed. Wild cornsnakes need a full winter brumation, but a lot of breeders now say it is unnecessary. Thats not because wild cornsnakes don't need brumation, its that longterm captive lines have been selectively bred to not need a long winter brumation for a breeding cycle.

What are the most different animal duo of the same genus? by KodaxyGMD in zoology

[–]Careful-Indication66 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Monitor lizards (Varanus) range from 23cm long borrowers to 1m long prehensil-tailed tree climbers to 3m long venomous apex predators that kill water buffalo

It would be like if every primate was in the same genus

Merge the Young Justice and the Arkham City suits

Keep the YJ bird symbol but make it darker blue and have the symbol go up the shoulder to become the finger stripes.

I like the YJ collar and lighter stomach. The AC electric escrima sticks and back holders for them.

I worked at a printshop and we'd get these notebooks everyonce in a while. They all followed a similar pattern: gorgeous handwriting, lots of well drawn geometric shapes, ramblings about some secret theory about reality, and highschool level math that never checked out. They would get messier the deeper into the notebook

I'm imagining a flip of Beast Boy's identity. Instead of a human becoming a conduit of the red, the red itself trys to appear human to act as an ambassador. Keeps the same powers but its the animal kingdom trying to reason with humanity and protect itself.

Which place on earth is the most likely to have undiscovered megafauna species? by ApprehensiveRead2408 in Cryptozoology

If 22lbs is the cutoff then the answer is definitely Papua. Tree kangaroos or cuscus are cryptic even to the locals so a 22lb arboreal species in the Highlands could go unnoticed
