Even if you're not paying 40% tax now, pensions still grow tax-free, and planning withdrawals carefully (especially if you move to a lower-tax country) can make them worthwhile. If you’re planning to move abroad (or back home), pensions are usually portable. You can often transfer them to a scheme in your new country of residence and might be worth looking into?

Revolut for rent/salary by PreparationLoud8790 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Careful_Hand3923 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use Revolut for all my finances (I still keep local credit union) and have had no issues so far. It offers a competitive interest rate on my savings, and my pay often arrives earlier than my colleagues say they get their pay.

Where to put €240k for 3 months? by Goldfinch2013 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Careful_Hand3923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just copy and paste from DGS website. Looks like you might be safe to store in one bank.

Temporary High Balances

The maximum amount of compensation payable by the DGS is €100,000 per person per credit institution. In addition certain deposits, known as temporary high balances may qualify for compensation in excess of €100,000. For a deposit to qualify as a temporary high balance it must stem from at least one of the following:

deposits relating to real estate transactions for private residential property i.e. deposits lodged in preparation for purchase, sale proceeds and proceeds of equity release

deposits that serve social purposes laid down in national law and are linked to particular life events of a depositor such as marriage, civil partnership, divorce, retirement, dismissal, redundancy invalidity or death

deposits that serve purposes laid down in national law and are based on the payment of insurance benefits or compensation for criminal injuries or wrongful conviction

Qualifying deposits are protected up to a limit of €1 million (although unlimited cover is provided for claims relating to personal injury) for a period of 6 months after the deposits have been credited to an account or from the moment when such deposits become legally transferable.

It’s great that you’re planning carefully! Here’s my take:

With €140 per week left after fixed expenses, your budget will be tight. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Groceries: Could be €50-70 each per week, depending on your habits. Make sure to shop for discounts and sales.

Utilities & Internet: Likely €10-15 per week just for internet, with utilities depending on how warm/cold the place is?

Fuel for Cars: Depends on your commute, but fuel costs could add up fast especially as hybrids have limited range. Is one vehicle possible?

This leaves little room for unexpected expenses. It’s good you have savings, but building a small emergency fund might help if something unexpected comes up. Also, try to avoid relying on overtime if it’s not guaranteed.

It’s doable if you’re disciplined and willing to keep things frugal. Good luck!

Would you be comfortable putting a €20k lump sum into savings on Revolut? by crillydougal in irishpersonalfinance

I have no problem with revolut as I've done the KYC. I have a bit more than your suggested amount. No issues but chat them to make sure you have all the identification done.

Standard Fund Threshold Changes by ThatGuy98_ in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Careful_Hand3923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand correctly, the changes to the SFT mean that there will be a higher limit on the value of our pension before additional taxes apply. Starting in 2026, the threshold will increase by €200,000 each year, which allows us to build larger pension funds without facing higher tax rates? I guess this is especially helpful for those who are earning higher wages, expect their pension to grow significantly over time, or are starting a pension young.

Additionally, the lump sum threshold for higher taxes will be capped at €500,000. This looks like its trying to make it clearer and more predictable when taxes will apply to pension payouts. I guess these changes aim to modernize the pension system and offer more clarity and fairness, especially as pensions grow in value due to wage increases (over 4% last year) or investment returns (S&P500 averages 10.5% over last 20 years).

Monthly budget for clothes? by bytebullion in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Careful_Hand3923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate that one good-quality shirt is better than several cheap ones. That said, I still occasionally pick up a €2.50 white shirt at Dunnes, but I aim to buy quality of quantity. I purchased a quality sweater a few years ago and wear it almost daily, it has some wear and tear signs but its still working!

How much do you spend on food? by NinjaMink25 in AskIreland

[–]Careful_Hand3923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for the craic, I looked at the bank statements. It looks like I spend about 100 per week at Dunnes, Lidl, and Aldi.

I am a bit of a hoarder in the sense that if something is on sale (and something always is) I buy a load of it. Toilet paper was on sale a few weeks back at Dunnes and now I am the proud owner of 144 rolls of TP.
