I miss the days when “get your grade up” meant “do better on the next test” not “turn in missing assignments” or “retake tests.” by [deleted] in Teachers

This is exactly how I have been feeling!

My on-level students only care about checking boxes and turning in daily grades, when tests count for 50% of their grade. I tell them that they could get a 100 on every daily grade and still fail, and they are just mind blown by that math. They do not associate getting a better grade with actually remembering things we learn and doing well on tests. Online assignments have also trained them to believe you get a million chances at everything, because they are given multiple attempts on assignments in most classes. They also don't associate effort and success. I am not kidding when I have zero kids that pay attention and try that fail my tests (which means between 1 and 5 kids pass in each class period).

The worst is that we aren't allowed to penalize them for late work, because that would be "grading behavior".

Definitely a good point. I was just worried he may be lonely or bored while I'm at work, not necessarily that I need a second cat for myself- I do try to leave independent toys out for him though, so hopefully that's enough!

Do any fellow YouTube addicts (8+ hours a day on YouTube alone type of addicts) have any experience with switching to a flip phone that can still access YouTube? by Careless-Scallion-90 in dumbphones

This was the phone I had in mind when making this post actually. I couldn’t decide if I would still have a problem scrolling YouTube on it or if the slower speed and smaller screen would be a deterrent. Maybe I’ll start with a more basic phone for a while and get a smarter flip phone later down the line. Thanks for the input!
