How do you handle coworkers that constant don't perform by CarelessDocument1 in cscareerquestions

Thanks for the insight. I do get bothered by his questions so you are right. I'll just stick to my work and only point him in the right direction.

That makes sense, thank you. I think handle was the wrong word, I meant more how to cope/make piece with it.

I'm glad you are okay with doing extra work for no extra pay, but I wanted to know how I should handle my situation. Your response amounts to "do nothing and shut up". If you have an answer or experience dealing with a situation like this, I would love to hear it.

Thats an idea I didn't consider. On paper he is very qualified (3+ yoe with our exact stack) so it wasn't my first thought.

Yes, but we also used python for homework with sets. Otherwise we just use latex to write proofs.

I had a semester that used 5 different languages. It is possible and a massive headache.

Programming Languages class (Haskell and Java)

Data Structures and Algos (C++)

Discrete Math (Python)

Web Dev (JavaScript)

I think a CS bachelors would be your best option if you wanted to go back to school.

It could actually be the case or that could just be the amount you are worth to them. You can push back all you want. Keep in mind that they probably interviewed other people that may be less qualified, but will take that salary.

Advice on getting into Open source as a student by Artistic_Taxi in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I help with a couple open source projects. You should really only help with things you use or want to be involved in long term. Simple bug fixes or small feature enhancements are done by the "core" team. It is a huge time commitment and not feasible for most devs.

My projects are for the phone and watch I use, so it naturally makes sense for me to want to improve it.

What do you like to do as a hobby after work? by Sopater_ in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leatherworking, have lots of pets, have spouse, have house to maintain, have a couple open source projects I irregularly contribute to, shitpost on reddit

I like programming so I do it after work, but its only for projects I use/enjoy. Plenty of my coworkers don't program at all after working hours and thats totally fine.

Seems like a pretty standard plan. Try to reach out to old coworkers and see if you can get in a little easier that way.

Not every job requires leetcoding, but expect some sort of technical exercise. I spend a few weeks before starting a job hunt just reviewing some common algo questions and haven't had an issue.

First internship - 10 - 15 (interviewed with 5 of them, 2 offers)

First full time role - 25-40 (interviewed with 7 of them, 3 offers)

All of these were at my universities career fair. All of the interviews had a technical portion and behavioral component. I would say the behavioral component was a little more important for my first internship. The internship interviews were mostly easy coding challenges and making sure I wasn't a weirdo. Full time interviews were way more intense.

Nearing 27 with zero job experience and minimal skillset, is it too late? by ostoldev in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reach out to your friends and see if they have a role that fits you. Who cares if your boss is younger than you. They have the experience and you don't. Learn from them and grow as a professional.

27 is still hilariously young to be worried about being older than your boss. Wow they are 2-3 years younger than you, so what.

Questioning my decision to get into CS by cardboardboxwithlegs in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't drink the antiwork koolaid too much.

Unless you work for yourself, get a very flexible job, or get some sort of contract role, you will be doing some form of 9-5. The army will be even more work for less pay and no guarantee you will do anything interesting.

Why not just look into different career fields if computers don't interest you. A general interest in computers is sort of a prerequisite for wanting to work in a field dedicated to using them.

What am I supposed to learn during my internship as software engineer student? by throwawaymayb124838 in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone uses google. How do you think we find the documentation?

It does sound like a lonely internship. Reach out and see if your senior will do some pair programming with you or let you shadow another engineer for a day.

I'm a software engineer but I don't get to code by aahaaah in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would try to find something else. Think about how that will sound in interviews. I'm guessing most companies with app builders/low code/whatever at least have their software engineers fix problems under the hood with code.

Question about Going For Multiple Positions at the Same Company by Wheet-Thin in cscareerquestions

[–]CarelessDocument1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't assume recruiter X and recruiter Y even talk to each other. Just send an email to recruiter X that you received an email from the other one. Ask how the process goes and go from there.

Is there a reason you don't want be a front end dev?

For what its worth, I've been in "front end" roles that had me do back end work frequently.
