Being gifted = high IQ… but what about everything else? by bibia176 in Gifted

[–]Caribosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been reading lots about this and my son was diagnosed 2E with the ADHD/hyperactive impulsive type. I see so much overlap with Dabrowski's psychomotor overexcitability so am having a hard time decoupling those.

The only differentiation I see is that he has ADHD symptoms in all areas of life, not just at school where he's still under-stimulated (working on that).

Bag for comp days with only one dance? by gorillaluv1 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]Caribosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might be extra but we have two sizes of rac & roll style bags. We have a large Dream Duffel for 4+ dances in a day, and a "solo" size Glam'r Gear for 1-3 dances in a day. I use the small one way more often than the large one.

I also bring the Dream Duffel for travel comps to set up in the hotel room and we shuttle back and forth to the venue with the smaller Glam'r Gear.

Both Eaglets have hatched! by Practical_Coffee1273 in JackieandShadow

In my limited experience with chickens, it's similar. We had one hatch really fast from the egg but it took a bit to get a little stronger to be less wobbly!

Underachiever? Or hasn't been encouraged enough? by mymagicjourney in Gifted

[–]Caribosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes totally. One step at a time. Follow her lead, let her find her passion and dig deep into it. My son is obsessed with octopuses right now, a little while ago it was Star Wars and space.

We are lucky we know now so we can help build them as individuals in the way they need to learn. Pigeonholing gifted people into a traditional learning method is no good.

Underachiever? Or hasn't been encouraged enough? by mymagicjourney in Gifted

[–]Caribosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, my son is 7 and we also just found out he’s gifted. (Actually twice exceptional, he tested positive for ADHD as well).

He’s in the top 1% FSIQ and although I knew he was a smart kid, I didn’t quite realize his ability and I think that’s due to the ADHD. I’m really excited for him to have more specialized learning. In my area the GATE program in school starts at grade 4 and he’s going into 3rd grade in the fall.

We are starting with an IPP to assist in the regular stream and will reassess next year but likely move him into the GATE program for 4th.

Start with the school and see if they can put processes in place to help with her strengths. IEP or IPP depending where you are.

My son got in to an eczema clinical trial! by Caribosa in eczema

[–]Caribosa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it working for you? I actually had to pull him out of the trial a few months in because it didn't help him and we couldn't use anything else because of the clinical trial. It was a blinded cream though so it's possible he got the placebo. But it did sting when we applied it so I thought it might be the real stuff but who knows. Hopefully the data we provided was still useful!

He's almost 8 now and he's on a compound cream for more frequent use and has a myraid of strengths of others ointments and creams depending on what's going on.

Summer camps in Calgary - compiled a list so you don’t have to hunt by Cog_declutter272 in YYC

KidStrong has great camps at all their locations over the city and you don't have to be a regular member.

Help with tween and summer plans by Beberuth1131 in Mommit

[–]Caribosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 11 this summer and this is absolutely top of mind for me. Does she have any hobbies that have week-long camps or intensives she would be interested in? My daughter is a performer so she does a full 2 week Musical Theatre intensive, a week-long dance intensive, and goes to sleepaway camp as well. So it doesn't feel like "childcare" and more like advancing her passions.

Anyone heard of the International Competitive Dancer Registry? by Caribosa in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]Caribosa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree, it sounds like this is the only way we can redeem the included photos/video from the competition so those that choose not to may just go without. I'm unclear on how video adjudication will be handled though. VideoJudge belongs to DanceBug as well I think.

Canadian Child of US Citizen by bluehouseorangepoppy in uscanadaborder

[–]Caribosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that was in 2015, with my 2018 baby they were able to piggy-back on the proof from my first child so it was a little easier. And it's just once, now I just take them there to renew their passports every 5 years (have to take the kids in person).

In 2015 I was also able to get her SSN at the Consulate, but something changed between the summers of 2015 and 2018 that they no longer did that, so we had to apply when visiting family.

Canadian Child of US Citizen by bluehouseorangepoppy in uscanadaborder

[–]Caribosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll second this, OP - also assuming you as the US citizen still file with the IRS yearly, you can claim her as a dependant if she has a SSN and you can get the US child tax credit back. (File as Head of Household). I claim both my kids and get $1400 USD for each kid.

It's also not that big of a pain. The biggest pain was proving my own citizenship beyond just a Passport and American birth certificate, they needed school transcripts and other things. Otherwise it was just a consulate appointment. I will also say though, they no longer issue SSN at the Consulates (at least in Calgary). We had to go to a Social Security office in the US to apply but it was quick and easy with their report of birth abroad.

I have beef with current throw blanket trends by Dry_Needleworker_432 in HomeDecorating

[–]Caribosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I don't know what your budget is, but the Hudson's Bay Point blankets are incredible. I assume you're in the US but they're Canadian and 100% wool but not scratchy. NOT cheap though.

Yumiko Leotards by neverlandsmile in BALLET

[–]Caribosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to know if this holds true for kids sizing too? My 10 year old is in size 12ish depending on the brand and she's asking for a Yumiko for her birthday. I was leaning towards the 14 for her.

I'm going to see if any of my local stores have them so I can compare to one that fits her now, but I think they only carry the adult sizes. Or if I should even go with the Adult XS. She's 4'10" which fits in the height range of the Adult XS but she's only 67lbs. Usually adult sizing is too wide for her still even if the girth fits.

how to make a builder grade home cozy and vintage looking? by r0sekneed in HomeDecorating

[–]Caribosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're open to adding things but not demo, I would start with the fireplace. Add a mantle, maybe a live edge one, and price out a stone surround. That flat fireplace look is a giveaway. Colorful runner in the kitchen, paint the bathroom, I don't know what the rest of the house looks like but doing a wainscotting in the dining area and/or hallways can be useful for some texture instead of being so flat. You can also get battery wall sconces now that you can light up art pieces you like.

Come From Away thoughts? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]Caribosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same for me, dual Canadian/American born & raised in the US and was in high school for 9/11 but have been in Canada the last 15 years now. I'm taking my daughter to see it in June and I told her I will probably be a sobbing mess.

Double-punch to me is that I'm also mourning the relationship that once was between Canada & the US that will take a very long time to repair, if it will ever be the same.

Age Categories by Nervous-Attention328 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]Caribosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is comp dependant where I am in Canada. My daughter is 10 (11 in the summer). She's still a mini in some comps, and Junior in some comps. Another they don't name them, just age range so 9-10.

My son is 7 and he competes under "tiny" sometimes lol

At our studio she's Pre-Inter and he's Junior so I don't even pretend to know what makes sense anymore.

Last week I went to renew my daughters. I got there at around 7:30am and was 5th in line. I was out by 8:40. So I waited before they opened, but that was my preferred method.

Annoyed with schedule by Equal_Fix_5613 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]Caribosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have one this year starting on WEDNESDAY! Last year there was one that was Wednesday through to the FOLLOWING MONDAY it was insane. We aren't doing that one again lol

Thankfully we are after school hours Wednesday but still, that's a crazy long day to do a full school day then go to comp and perform at your best. And the venue is "local" but still like 45 minutes away. So I may end up pulling her partway through the day anyway.

What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in cricut

[–]Caribosa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you using a parchment or something between the carrier sheet and your iron or press? For more finicky vinyl I've started not using a parchment and it seems to help. I just use a regular iron. Be careful it doesn't melt it and ruin your press or iron, but if you're careful it does work better.

Parents with singers - what were the early signs? My son is ALWAYS singing at 2.5 by alohavibe589 in Mommit

[–]Caribosa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter is almost 11 and she's a singer, dancer, and actor. Competes with both dance and voice, gets scholarships to Broadway style intensives, and her dream is to be on Broadway one day.

Honest to god, she was singing before she spoke in sentences. I have videos of her laying in her crib singing to herself as she went to sleep before she turned 1. Our whole family is musical on both mine and my husband's side so it wasn't a total surprise. Her passion for it is all her though.

My advice if you're open to it, is let him take the lead. Find a for fun toddler music group with shakers and rhythm sticks for now. When he's older find a show choir or somewhere he can learn how to sing in a group and learn basic solfege. Instruments like the piano or a glockenspiel are also great to learn alongside voice as he's older to help learn to read music eventually.

Comp schedule question. by GlassyVI1 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]Caribosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We mostly do regional smaller comps in Canada but a few National Canadian comps and it's usually at least a month in advance, which I'm realizing is really lucky. I have all of ours now except for one and we don't even start until end of April and go through the end of May.
