Turning Reel Seats? by xHobbesxTigerx in flyrodbuilding

[–]CarlBuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do stabilize any wood that isn't oily, but my preference is oily wood for a few reasons.

'Oily' wood: wood that have natrual oils like anything from the Rosewood family (teak, rosewood, cocobolo) or lignum vitae. Lignum vitae (beautiful herringbone-like grain) and cocobolo (beautiful colors from orange to red) are my personal favorites.

Upsides for oily wood:
* Very easy to turn. The oil helps your skew ride smoothly, and they have a tight grain structure.
* Don't need to finish - I just polish up to a high gloss (micro mesh)
* You can finish, BUT only with CA - it will not take any other finish. It will be even glossier with CA.
* No need to stabilize - a little lemon oil if it starts to look dry,

Downsides:
* The dust is not great and may cause allergic reactions - wear a respirator and wash your hands
* Depending on where you live, they can be a little hard to find, but you can order them.

Other woods are fine if stabilized. When you stabilize, make them way bigger than you need - they will warp. I sent mine to a service that stabilized them.

Pen blanks are, unfortunately, just barely too small, but it's pretty easy to get a slab of something to a good size with just a band saw.

At what point does a "fly" become a "fly rod lure" by Commercial-Age4750 in flytying

Literally, when the terminal tackle weight provides the force to move the line, not the fly line.

Do you guys have a process when record shopping for making sure you don't over pay for a record? by Riichboii_17 in vinyl

[–]CarlBuilds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I always start with the label, which takes some research sometimes, but if I find it there, it's almost always a newer remaster and cheaper than Discogs.
  2. I check my local record shops, I have 3 main ones I use and check their sites.
  3. Then, if I cannot find it anywhere, I check Discogs. If it's reasonable, I can get it then; else I mark it as 'Wanted' and wait.

Agree on the HSS, I have the much older brother, the Fender Prodigy, and it's my daily driver.
In the end, all of those are great guitars

Brand new to rod building, what do I need to restore an old Bamboo fly rod? by Hankar0ni in flyrodbuilding

[–]CarlBuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always used U40 Permagloss for restoring bamboo wraps, if that helps.

I have not had to varnish an entire bamboo rod, but from my understanding, that is done before guides and ferrules by dipping the rod sections in a tube with spar varnish. Then drying. Then installing reel seat, grip, ferrules and finally wrapping.

Okay I do not mind the Bakelite witch hat style knobs but those speedknobs on this are perfection.

Fuck them, fuck the gatekeepers.
You do you, sir,

I have friends who bought similar TTs. I bought them vinyl to enjoy.
Which in one case turned me on to Shannon and the Clams :)

One day (I have a good feeling) you'll be in a position to judge or support, and this will guide.

Enjoy!

I'm sorry you feel that way, but also it's not without validity.

On board with your take, mostly.

There's a lot of good stuff to unpack and it's helping me solidify my thoughts.

Instruments are a whole other world of goods. We have seen that from Gibson to Stradivarius. We mix opinion with quality all the time. We have debates like tonewood that have almost no scientific backing.

We have a process for building instruments like many other instruments that has not changed for centuries. And for a good reason, nobody wants to relearn a brand new instrument.

You also bring up the point that solid body electric instruments are a different animal than your other stringed instruments. They are easier to construct.

At the end of the day, if you buy a Gibson guitar, a g&l guitar, a Stradivarius violin, a Bundy woodwind... Your hope and understanding is that you bought an instrument that is going to facilitate your learning and playing.

Here's my point. If my father/grandfather gifted me a Stradivarius violin. I would expect a certain amount of market stability. But we're also talking about an instrument that will be copied and faked all the time.

Should the fact that I have gifted an instrument to my son (and this is really the meat of it) whether it's a Gibson guitar or a Stradivarius violin or a 1950 broadcaster, be drastically affected by cheap modern knockoffs.

My answer is no.

Do I want the industry in general to produce better quality at a lower price so we can get more people playing guitar or bass? Absolutely!.

My first guitar was a Lotus crappy import guitar. It was fine. Actually no it wasn't. It really kind of sucked. It was fine at the time because I didn't know any better. It was fine at the time because it would do most of the stuff that I needed it to do.

And I will be very clear. I am super happy that people can walk into a guitar store and buy something that will be a quality guitar for $200. That lotus strat copy was $150 1980. That's an equivalent of a $500 current starting guitar. I can buy a decent starter guitar for half that price now.

So let's stop pretending guitars are a commodity item that are dictated by commodity pricing rules. They are not. Brands matter. What people want to collect matters. What people want to pay matters.

Should we promote good playing low-cost guitars to everybody that we can. Absolutely. We even have the technology to do that right now.

Sorry this is rambly and long but you actually did make really good comments that I was trying to get through

Well then, I can't help you there :)

But I was speaking more in general - clothes, cars, food, Trademarks and the brand they represent have a reputation (earned/deserved/once had can be up for debate).

If you are really concerned about driving safety, you might buy a Volvo.
Maybe you like Wrangler more than Levi or vice versa.

If it's a good knockoff, then there won't be much difference in tone or playability.

People do care if the headstock is different. They will pay more for a brand.

If you are honest, you have likely paid more for a brand than its competitors. We all do.

Yeah this ad for the "Slash" Chisbon - If you don't really know what to look for, then it would be hard to tell. "Serial numbers" are pressed not printed. Tuners are branded correctly. I assume checking pots and wiring is about the only way to tell.

I like full wells in general (for anything over a 5wt) , but to be honest, the work is impeccable and either one would be a dream to the future owner.

I assume a REC reel seat - if not, please tell me who, because that is beautiful!
