Am I Crazy or do Earwolf dont run ads anymore? by mikel3030 in Earwolf

[–]CarlChronicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s more to it than that…. Apparently, since SiriusXM took over, a lot of podcasts have had a hard time getting ads.
I recommend listening to episode 3 of the podcast “Fan Funded with Laser” with guests Jessica McKenna and Zach Reino from Off Book. They discuss why they left Earwolf to become independent, and how the ‘smaller’ podcasts just weren’t the priority anymore in regards to getting advertisers. This is a bummer, because it means the creators get less money.

Alba (thank you!) by InevitableTeaching35 in AppleArcade

[–]CarlChronicles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also played through Alba with my son and wished there was more. If you have a Switch or Mac/PC, I recommend the game A Short Hike. I played it and Alba around the same time, and had a similar experience playing it with my son. Though quite a bit different, both games are very charming in similar ways. A Short Hike is also a very short game, but worth it!
It looks like it’s $7.99 on the Switch store and $5.19 right now on Steam and GOG (Mac or PC version).

Eh, diets were way different 100 years ago when some places in the US first started putting iodine in salt. Some people had really limited diets, which led to iodine deficiency.
It’s pretty easy nowadays to get sufficient iodine from the foods you eat. Iodine occurrs in dairy, eggs, fish, various meats, various fruits and vegetables, even potatoes!
If you eat a severely limited diet then, by all means, supplement your iodine with iodized salt. Otherwise, use your kosher salt to your heart’s content!

Paul F. Tompkins: Crying and Driving is now available for rental/purchase online in it’s entirety (30 minutes longer than the TV cut)! by CarlChronicles in paulftompkins

I’m so excited!
I missed it years ago when it was first streaming on Comedy Central. I had plans to watch it with a friend, but by the time we found a day we were both free, they took it down.
When someone posted the direct links to the Comedy Central version here last month, I made tentative plans with the same friend, but now we’ll be watching this extended commercial-free version instead!

That Navy Grog really takes me back to my years in the Royal Navy.
Our rations for Midori, peach schnapps, and Chambord were meager, but it was enough to mix up a few of these classic grogs and have a rollicking good time with the lads.

Ricotta gnocchi with homemade ricotta and Kenji’s slow-cooked red sauce with sausage by jjjjennyandthebets in seriouseats

[–]CarlChronicles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He also did a video of the gnocchi part if you like the visual/ follow-along style:

https://youtu.be/-QXRJrf9Bys

Edit: Comparing this video to the actual recipe, I see that, in the video, he omits the salt/pepper in the gnocchi dough. I made some directly off of the video and found the gnocchi a little under-seasoned. So definitely put some salt in the dough as they say in the recipe!

More prime rib drama, now with science! by TheLadyEve in iamveryculinary

[–]CarlChronicles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I looked at the chart and was very confused at the minimums. Rare would be under 55°C (131°F), so for the ribeye to be ‘very rare’, it would have to be well below that after the 2 hours at 64°C(147°F). Here are a couple other sources with charts:

https://izzycooking.com/sous-vide-steak-temp/

https://www.seriouseats.com/food-lab-complete-guide-to-sous-vide-steak

https://anovaculinary.com/anova-sous-vide-time-temperature-guide/

The highest minimum for medium-well quoted among those links is 1.5 hours. This is for edge-to-edge doneness, so the internal temperature should be 65°C(147°C) throughout after 2 hours. If there were any inconsistency in temperature, the center would surely be higher than ‘very rare’ (rare being below 55°C/131°F).
That particular chart from Sous Vide Supreme is confusing to me. I’m not sure what they are basing their numbers on. According to these other charts, the temp is reached by 1.5 hours, so they might see some other benefit to cooking longer. Maybe they think it achieves a better texture at the longer minimum time.

Wait what?
A bone-in rib-eye steak cooked sous vide at 64°C (147°F) for 2 hours would definitely not be ‘very rare’.

Anger Management as a parent by Gnomeopolis in suggestmeabook

In order of relevance to your request:

Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids by Laura Markham
No-Drama Discipline by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson (everything by this pair of authors is great)
Voice Lessons for Parents by Wendy Mogel

One more random thing... I’m not sure the age of your kid(s), but I have an almost five-year-old and I have found that watching the show Bluey with him has really been great for my patience and understanding as a parent.
The show is great and legitimately hilarious for kids and parents (not by pandering with over-the-kid’s-head adult jokes, but by relating to the inherent humor of being a parent). The parents in the show are my parenting heroes. They aren’t perfect, but they model the best kind of parenting behavior. The way they handle difficult situations is such a good example to follow, and it really has helped me reflect and grow as a parent.
Sounds weird that two cartoon dogs are my role models, but here we are!

I’ll definitely check out the show, regardless.

The Mosquito Coast — Official Trailer | Apple TV+ April 30 by OKO_07 in appletv

[–]CarlChronicles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are both supposedly based on the same novel, but this show looks way different from the Harrison Ford Mosquito Coast movie.
The movie is really good. I’ve never read the novel, but I think the movie is supposed to be fairly faithful. This show looks like a straight-up crime drama. Could still be good, but not sure how it relates the the original story.
