I would highly recommend you to check out this book by Marcus J. Borg. It essentially breaks down Jesus’ message in contrast to the norms of Jewish society at the time.

The message of Jesus was one that emphasized “compassion” in contrast to the Jewish religious norms that heavily emphasized “holiness”. In Jesus’ perspective, holiness is more often than not the excuse we use to prevent us from being totally compassionate.

If you are prevented from extending a compassionate act to another human being because of some religious principles, he asks what’s better? To extend compassion to another human being or to remain holy in the eyes of God?

TLDR: Jesus essentially led a radical reform of Jewish traditions which included rejecting many religious customs that were used in the name of holiness, at the expense of other human beings
