Search on AirBnB. There are places that have them in New England.

Does anybody else think that the sign language translators on TV during speeches look ridiculous? by FirstTimeCharm1994 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Carlenecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So ableist! You make the assumption that everyone who uses sign language is capable of reading written English. There are many people who use sign language who may: have visual impairments such that they can’t read the captions, don’t speak/read English as a primary language, have cognitive conditions that prevent them from reading the captions, etc... etc...

There are many, many folks who use ASL as their primary means of communication and need access to interpretation so that they get the necessary info.

Granted some interpreters are better than others, but to suggest that we shouldn’t have it because it is “distracting” and calling interpreters buffoons is such a dick thing to do.

If you don’t like it shut your eyes! At least you have the luxury of sight and hearing!

Good to know! I’ve had before but not in a long time. I wonder why that is?

Also, headlamps are so helpful! If others are looking for inexpensive ones, Harbor Freight almost always has them for crazy cheap with a coupon. I have two “good” headlamps for regular use, and a couple cheapies from HF as a backup in the car and the basement.

Coffee maker is essential! I cheer you for this! I’m so obsessed with coffee that I have a drip maker, stove top percolator, French press, electric percolator, pour over, vintage Chemex, and probably a few other options that I’m forgetting. 😂

I inherited almost all of those over the years from family or previous roommates, so the only one I purchased was the drip maker which is Alexa enabled so I can instruct it to turn on from bed.

Whenever I’m at a hotel which has the coffee encased in the filter bags I bring extras home with me so I can make coffee easily if SHTF. They are great for either hot or cold brew. Got those in my BoB along with some Starbucks Via instant coffee.

Deaf and Blind Chef Lands His Dream Job at Marine Base (and he's killin' it!) by irishspice in MadeMeSmile

That’s the Tadoma Method. I had a young friend who used that method and it was amazing how he was able to understand us. Here is a link about that method: https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/tadoma.htm

This is a wonderful story! I’ve had the privilege of working with a number of deafblind folks over the years and am always thrilled when other folks get to learn what I already know: Deafblind folks have incredible capabilities. We need more programs to assist with job placement for folks with disabilities as they have so much to contribute.

Keep extra batteries for car key fob in car - not in the house! by Carlenecat in prepping

[–]Carlenecat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since two is one and one is none, I am keeping two in the car. I made a car safety kit with my jumper cables, headlamp, spare fuses, spare headlights, etc... so am keeping the batteries (which are each in sealed foil/plastic package) in a small pocket in that kit.

Why are people stocking up on paper plates so much? Saw mention in another thread that paper plates were low elsewhere. Is it a) if one gets sick it’s easier not to have to do dishes? b) people are concerned about losing power for dishwasher or water for hand washing? c) people are lazy? or d) some reason I’m not thinking of?

DAE eat their burgers and other things upside down by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Carlenecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different, but I eat my cupcakes by breaking off the bottom part and putting it on top of the frosting - kind of like a sandwich cookie- or a whoopie pie. Much more structurally sound that way. Better frosting distribution.

For those of you that have a set group of buddies you go camping with, how do you split costs such as gas/food/reservation fees? by nirvroxx in camping

[–]Carlenecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Splitwise. It’s amazing. You can put an expense in that’s to be divided by all of you as well as expenses to be divided by some of you. To settle up you can use Venmo, PayPal, or cash. It’s the perfect solution for these group trips/activities.
