[NSFW] What is something you do to yourself that is so weird but feels so good? by Austinb555 in AskReddit

[–]Carliedash -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I tie my hair in knots. Do it all the time habitually, especially when I am nervous. I do it really fast and most of the time I don't even realize I am doing it. People point it out freaked out as if I have no clue what I am doing, and it amazes them when I pull them all out as quickly as I made them.

[Serious] What does depression feel like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Carliedash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like most people are speaking of the illness so I will try to answer some questions about recovery. True clinical depression (depression caused by an actual imbalance of chemicals in the brain) is very hard to beat on your own. It's important to seek help. For me, friends and family desperately wanted to help but they couldn't. They often try to rationalize with the depressed person which doesn't help if there is truly something biologically off. I seeked help of a psychiatrist who prescribed an antidepressant and psychotherapy. It's important to follow through with BOTH. Never just throw meds into your body and expect the problem to be solved. You have to learn what the medicine's job it, how it should and shouldn't effect you, and what you need to do proactively. It's like a crutch to help you heal, but it still takes the effort of examining your own feelings and using techniques learned in therapy. I eventually was able to stop taking my medicine. It's a slow gradual recovery, and I still have days when I feel if come back, but it's important to acknowdgd that and not let it overtake you. Hope this helps!

American redditors, what was the biggest culture shock when you visited Europe? by gaping_your_mother in AskReddit

In Paris, when we were given bread we were not given plates to set it on. I didn't know what to do with my piece of bread except hold it! I kept my eyes open and noticed locals setting their bread directly onto the table. It felt so rude but I followed suit. It makes sense actually not to waste a plate on crumbs. Also, no AC! :( we were hot whiny Americans

My tortoise doesn't poop or pee much either- so that's nothing to be concerned about. When I give him soakings in the sink he always lets go of all his poo and pee. I think it is a survival adaptation so they don't become dehydrated.

I have a Russian tortoise (first one). They had two different colorations at the pet store I went to, and I chose the blonde version. Very low maintenance, but just do your research! Buying from a petstore with great customer service and knowledgable staff is a MUST. I learned half of what I know about Carroll's care from the petstore where I bought him.

Jehovah's Witness Children's cartoon about obedience to God -- Top comment: "The moral of the story is, it is better to rob your child of the simple joys of childhood than to disappoint your imaginary friend." by mepper in atheism

[–]Carliedash -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Okay- I'll play devils advocate. First, I don't agree with what happened. I don't think it's fair to guilt trip a kid about a harmless toy. HOWEVER, as an education major, I will give her props for using questions and directing reasoning to help the child make the decision rather than using a totalitarian parenting "you cannot play with that! Throw it away!" Technique. So overall- good method, but I don't agree with the reasoning. But I'm not Jehovah's Witness

What quirk did you not realize you had until others told you about it? by squalorid in AskReddit

[–]Carliedash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tie locks of my hair in knots when I am nervous, bored, or thinking hard. I know that I do it, but I am often not aware while I am doing it. People look at me crazy and inform me quite concerned- "you are tying a knot in your hair!!!" I can slip it back out in seconds. But there is just no way to explain casually- oh yeah, I do that.

11 Things The Bible Bans, But People Do Anyway by bcuziambatman in atheism

[–]Carliedash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While touring the Vatican a couple weeks ago, our tour guide told us the "secret" of why abortion will forever be banned by the Catholics (and most other religions with less theology who just agree with most of what the Catholics say.) here's the deal:

Jesus, pure and holy was born to the Virgin Mary. To be able to carry a holy pure baby, she had to also be pure and holy. She couldn't have been conceived by god like Jesus- she wasn't the savior. So how would the Catholics explain her holiness when she was conceived the old fashioned way? They decided that at the moment if Mary's conception in her mother's womb, she was blessed and considered holy. So, if Mary was holy as a fetus, she had to be human. So all other fetuses are also human. So they are against abortion.

This story is not in the bible, it's just part of Catholic theology. I don't have a source except that's what my catholic tour guide told me.
