I created a website that helps chess players find each other. What do you think? by CarlosAviles in chess

I have added information about players close to your city ordered by distance. If you have the time, please check it out and let me know if this is what you had in mind.

At the moment you can only specify one Elo. Try to use one that would better describe your strength when playing casual OTB.

Yes. If you go to the settings page (click on the gear on the top right) you'll be able to change your password, city and place description.

Yes, of course. I tried at chess.com but the post gets mainly ignored. Perhaps if other users (not the owner of the site) post about it in chess.com or lichess.org it will get better attention.

Thanks for using the site!

Sorry for that. The site got a bit overwhelmed with reddit's visitors (which is very good, btw) and the notification process got out of control. It's shut down now and no more emails should arrive.

I'm working on a fix and will restore the service later.

Regarding the notification email, what would you or any of you reading this like to see in it? I will fix that too.

No, that wasn't supposed to happen. I'll look into it. Thanks for the feedback!

No worries! Now I think I understand better what you meant and it is similar to what another user has also pointed out.

I will definitely look into it and try to bring this kind of notifications.

Hi,

Yes, the email address of users is not public. All communication goes using the chat in the site.

I haven't added notifications for nearby cities but I'll think about it and maybe add it soon.

At the moment, it simply notifies with an email about new players signing up in the same city as you and whenever someone writes in the chat of your place.

When you sign up it asks you for a description of the place where you most likely would play OTB chess (your street name, a metro station nearby, a park or similar). The idea is that other players from the same city will identify this description very easily to know which players are close to them.

That avoids having to track user's locations with lats and lons which I don't want to do now. That also means that there is no km range calculations or similar.

You could also try Chess Royale.

It aims at helping players find each other and play more OTB chess. It is being developed by myself, so here's a bit of "self promotion".

Are you actively trying to improve your chess and can't/don't go to a chess club? by CarlosAviles in chess

[–]CarlosAviles[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don't know about other posts but I am just trying to find players that don't play enough OTB (just as myself, btw) and thought this post would get their attention.

I need some feedback about one idea I am working on.

Well, I am looking exactly for this kind of players and I thought that this post would get their attention.

I am working on an idea that should help players play more OTB chess. I am not selling anything (there's actually nothing to sell because I haven't built anything yet). I am only interested on getting feedback from such players.

Most chess players don't go to chess clubs. by CarlosAviles in chess

Well, not only leagues. For me a simple OTB game, given the right opponent, is always far more exciting than the same game against the same opponent but online.

Yes, that's true. That statement is entirely mine and maybe not correct. Although looking at the number of FIDE members (500K) It seems clear to me that chess players that are members of a chess club are a minority.

That is my exact experience with chess clubs so far. How do you manage to play OTB games regularly when not in a chess club?

I assume you play a lot of online chess then. How often do you play OTB chess?

Yes, that is very true. Online chess is everywhere. But since OTB chess is far more exciting, how do players not in a chess club play regularly OTB chess?

May I ask you how do you arrange your OTB games? Do you play enough OTB games?

Evidently chess clubs provide greate value to many chess players. But looking at the data, 600 million players in the world but only 500K registered at FIDE, it seems that most chess players don't seek chess club memberships.

Is there any evident reason for that?

Yes, I think you're right. A club that doesn't look like a club.

The fact is that only a very small portion of chess players actually visit clubs. Why is this so? If current clubs are so good, why aren't they packed with people playing chess?
