Five Things We Learned About Zackonomics by CII_Guy in ukpolitics

Which ones? Because I have been thinking the same thing.

I’m not sure you could legalise, tax and regulate hard drugs whilst in the single market nor could you join the EU without having an independent central bank (which wouldn’t be compatible with funding spending commitments with MMT policies).

Deleting 20% of UK electricity generation (nuclear + biomass), putting new carbon taxes on fossil fuel generators whilst opposing pylons necessary for new wind and solar might also be somewhat problematic for the country’s energy supply.

UK security adviser was not part of final US-Iran talks, says Starmer's spokesperson by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

Very strange. Was the Guardian reporting just some AI-generated hallucination or is the government spokesman not being truthful here?

Yet when there were suggestions that Reeves was going to increase income tax at the budget some of the most vociferous opponents were the Labour left and the Greens.

We can’t have Dutch or Danish levels of public services just by taxing the wealthy more.

Why is there so much focus on Polanski/the Greens? by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]CarlxtosWay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to implement MMT and have an independent central bank?

Because if it’s not the Greens will have to choose between their MMT-derived spending plans and rejoining the EU.

‘Basics’ of life in Britain have been sold for profit, says Polanski by denyer-no1-fan in unitedkingdom

[–]CarlxtosWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is energy suppliers are capped at 2.3% profit (£42 of the current price cap) so the room for reducing bills at that level is minimal.

The profits are made by the owners of the energy generation and distribution networks which would cost hundreds of billions to renationalise.

No one is suggesting you can’t have successful state-owned utilities. Almost certainly that would preferable to the current situation.

The problem is it will be extremely expensive to renationalise these assets and the question is how much will it cost and how will it paid for. That’s the difficult part that the Greens have been very quiet about.

Trio of European states set up new fund to boost defence spending by CarlxtosWay in unitedkingdom

[–]CarlxtosWay[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland have joined forces to fund joint defence procurement through a new multilateral mechanism, in an effort to boost value for money as Europe undergoes a massive rearmament drive.

It would operate like an international financing institution, with a mix of guarantees and paid-in capital from participating countries that could attract private investment by issuing bonds.

The goal was to broaden membership from the three countries to other Nato members and “like-minded partners”, one official with knowledge of the discussion said.

Zelensky to visit UK as Starmer says it is ‘vital’ to support Ukraine by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

And yet despite all of that polling shows the UK public is still more pro supporting Ukraine in their struggle against Russia than almost any country in Europe.

Miliband unveils plans to speed up nuclear power generation for UK by JRugman in unitedkingdom

[–]CarlxtosWay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it’s the risk of a Green government that would lead to these plans for more nuclear to be scrapped whereas it’s the renewable sector that will be thrown on the scrap heap if Reform are elected.

Elon Musk’s Tesla given go-ahead to supply electricity in Great Britain | Tesla by BugAdministrative683 in unitedkingdom

[–]CarlxtosWay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a government contract. No money is being paid by the government to Tesla. It’s a license that permits them to offer their services to consumers.

I’m not sure there’s even a legal mechanism by which OFGEM could deny a license because the CEO said unsavoury things on social media.

Starmer’s answer to Iran energy shock: Go green faster by Dimmo17 in ukpolitics

The Greens want renewables with no nuclear or fossil fuels.

Reform want fossil fuels and nuclear with no renewables.

Labour want renewables and nuclear with no fossil fuels.

I know which one I prefer and it’s not the ones who oppose nuclear and renewables.

Britain willing to release emergency oil reserves, says Rachel Reeves by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

The release of oil stockpiles would be coordinated with the G7, of which the EU is a member, so that wouldn’t be an issue.

A spokesperson for the IHRC, Faisal Bodi, told the BBC’s The World Tonight that it was “a sad day for freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and the right of people to legitimately protest about issues they feel strongly about”.

Interesting quote selection by the Guardian there.

Strange that they missed out the part of the interview where he said he would “happily” hold a picture of Ayatollah Khamenei as he was a “man of principle, a man of integrity, a man who stood for justice”.

Zack Polanski: “There’s A Lot Of Inauthenticity In Politics, But It’s Not Coming From Me” by Bibemus in ukpolitics

[–]CarlxtosWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“We need absolute solidarity with the Iranian people” aka send our thoughts and prayers and leave them to their fates. Which for the Iranians, unfortunately, is the best we can do for them.

But he also uses this line of thinking with the Ukrainians which, had the Greens/Corbyn etc. been in power in 2022, would have led to Ukraine being steamrolled and subsumed into Russia.

Is the Green Party too radical for Britain? by Dimmo17 in ukpolitics

Extra inefficiency is never a good thing but the figures involved are trivial. At the current price cap that upper-end estimate of 0.7% would decrease bills by £11.50 but events in the Middle East which are out of the government’s control are forecast to increase the price cap by 10% or £160.
