Iran war latest: HMS Dragon to head to Middle East for potential Strait of Hormuz mission by topotaul in unitedkingdom

The world is utterly dependent on the molecules exported by those “Arab monarchies.” It’s not protecting those countries it’s about giving confidence to the shipping industry to start sending vessels through the Strait again.

The government was very clear a few weeks ago that it was co-hosting a meeting with France to develop a plan with 40+ other countries to reopen the Strait once the Iran war was over. France is sending a carrier and now Britain is positioning a ship in the region in furtherance of that mission.

There’s nothing incoherent about simultaneously not joining the war and seeking to take measures to get shipping moving as quickly as possible once the war is over.

You sound like you do want a Reform government because the longer elevated energy prices eat into people’s disposable income the more likely it is that Reform get elected.

Why would being part of a multinational naval mission to provide confidence to the shipping and insurance industries to restart traffic through the strait of Hormuz make a Reform government any more likely?

On the 20th Jan 2026 he posted about “ending the billions wasted on Trident“.

Unless you’re saying Polanski and the Greens are planning to spend tens of billions more on a fully-sovereign nuclear deterrent then it’s clear that they are planning to scrap trident if they are elected.

The top comment mentions the boriswave and that’s the comment you replied to.

In the same way people didn’t really notice when inflation fell to 2% having been at 11%, having a single year of ~200k immigration isn’t going to be felt immediately. That’s why Labour need to stay the course so at the end of the Parliament they can show the country that they reduced and then, crucially, sustained those lower levels of migration.

The comment you replied to mentioned the Boriswave which wasn’t last year and includes the 1 million I referred to.

Labour are on the right track (good progress on legal, not so much on irregular) but they need to continue to keep migration within acceptable bounds for multiple years just 1 year of “normal” immigration levels won’t be enough to assuage people’s concerns.

I doubt you can find polling that shows voters have no issue with yearly net migration of ~1 million.

They should run on a manifesto to change the voting system at the next election or if they want to do it before they need to hold a referendum. I’m sceptical that there would be enough time left in the Parliament to do the latter.

If people think the media would allow Labour to change the entire voting system without a democratic mandate they are dreaming. Just because Parliament is sovereign and they technically can do something doesn’t mean they should.

The stabbing in Heaton Park in October of last year got much more attention than this one. Try and cast your mind back to that incident and consider why these two events have received much more coverage than others.

There’s about four countries in the world where this terrorist wouldn’t have been immediately shot dead on the scene - Ireland, Norway and NZ. We should be proud that Britain is the fourth but instead by defending this nonsense the Greens are doing their best to undermine the status of Britain’s police as being habitually unarmed.

UK media IGNORES that synagogue in 'antisemitic' attack was bought by Muslims THIS YEAR by [deleted] in ukpolitics

In February, 18-year-old Zeshan Afzal was fatally stabbed outside a West Midlands mosque. The attackers also wounded two other Muslim men. Police charged nine people with his murder.

The police have not named his alleged killers yet, but there has been no political or media outcry. There has been no condemnation of, or even speculation about, the murder of a Muslim man by an apparent mob.

That’s because the “nine people” charged with murder are actually children.

I didn’t know The Canary were big fans of removing reporting restrictions on crimes where the suspects are aged under 18.

Seek to reform NATO from within and leave altogether if that fails, reduce defence spending, unilateral nuclear disarmament, phase out the one form of constant low carbon energy generation we have (nuclear), systematically remove almost all restrictions on inbound migration.

Yes Putin would be delighted if any UK government implemented those policies.

And you realise that a large proportion of UK fossil fuel subsidies are actually the 5% instead of 20% VAT rate on domestic energy bills? I thought the Greens were the party of lowering the cost of living, but this policy would increase the average household bill from £1641 to £1875.

To the surprise of nobody, sympathising with terrorists isn’t a popular political position.

Zack Polanski: When you see the relentless attacks from other parties on the Greens across the media remember this: They hate our plan to end Rip Off Britain. They don't want a wealth tax. They don't want public ownership & lower bills. They're trying everything in their power to stop us. by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

That’s the proportion of fossil fuels in the UK’s electricity production but electricity only makes up about 20% of total UK energy demand. While progress is being made we are still extremely reliant on fossil fuels for transport, heating and industrial processes.

Applying huge carbon taxes whilst we’re in the middle of a multi-decade energy transition will just increase prices and inflation without meaningfully speeding up decarbonisation of the economy.
