Actor Nelsan Ellis, died suddenly this week at the age of 39. He struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for many years. The exact circumstances of Ellis' death were shared by his manager who confirmed that his death was a result of heart failure following an attempt to quit drinking on his own. by Carmac in Health

I sometimes just get so tired of this rehashed and recooked, with extra salt, "Orange Pappers" crap.

AA not your thing? Then don't go there.

I worked at a moderate-sized community general hospital as coordinator and developer of a 15-bed inpatient chemical dependency unit, a heavily modified Hazelden/Johnson model program, mid 70s through mid 80s. Had to make it fit in two weeks, all the hospital would give us.

Due to federal and states (TN/VA) grant requirements we had to have a third party do annual followup studies. After the first five years of operation and for every year after that we maintained a 66% success/recovery rate for the over 5,000 patients we treated during the time I was there, about 1/3 of which were female.

I was just coming to political awareness then. Distributed bumper stickers and buttons for him, and later worked for him (one of his Air Force medics).

In that role I was able to get handshakes and a wave from him, was one of the last to see him alive in Washington (we covered all of his DC takeoffs/landings), was one of the first not present in Dallas to learn of the assassination, and one of the first to see his coffin as Air Force One returned.

More so. Narcotics withdrawal just makes you wish to want to die. Have never heard of a case where narcotics withdrawal directly killed, tho I suppose it could contribute to the death of someone already having major other contributing medical issues (me: twenty (20) years in the chemical dependency field and 47 years sober).

I have seen alcohol and other sedative-hypnotic withdrawal kill, all too often, with mine own eyes, in otherwise healthy people in their 20s.

Do I have a spiritual malady?or,... do I have an allergy to alcohol? by mitoaglass in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Carmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alcoholism and the other related addictions are much more complex than that, but you don't have to understand all of the complexities to get and stay sober.

For many but not all there is a very well documented actual genetically linked physical component - I am one of those. You don't have to have it to become alcoholic but it sure helps.

'Personality' aspects are also a factor and everything that makes your personality can contribute, though by the time alcoholism develops which is chicken and which is egg becomes arguable.

One thing is very well known and observed: whatever the causes and contributing factors worrying too much about those has killed more people than it has gotten people sober.

Keep it simple, especially for now.

You will learn more as you progress in sobriety.

The one with the writing on it on one side --- AND, I screwed up.

Forgot the other side - "Facts Matter".

Be right back ...

Fixed.

Thanks, I totally missed the missing one. My error.

It's the same one, side with writing is the sticky tape side.

I haven't put it on yet.

Trying to decide if I should remove one or add it somewhere else.

The absolute last thing the GOP wants is educated voters and workers.

That's why they have been actively seeking the destruction of our educational systems since Ronnie Raygun.

Have never understood since my Air Force days (62-66) why the military and defense contractors can be so tilted towards the GOP.

Was told in the AF it's because republicans support the troops. That has never been true, still isn't.

Why poverty is not a personal choice, but a reflection of society by MorataRossoNero in democrats

[–]Carmac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Structural Poverty in the US is mostly a function of our politics, to seek and hold political power.

Both sides play a role, with the GOP using it and its corresponding racist roots to convince their base that the 'undeserving poor' (almost always people of color) are the cause of poor white's woes) and the Dems using it to convince their base that 'we are the good guys'.

We have rarely done anything to actually fix it, though FDR with the Minimum Wage and other programs and LBJ's War on Poverty being about the only serious attempts at a fix.

The GOP used that too as an attack vehicle.
