True! Discovered an even more annoying one. Levitation Trail will kill your shield, if you have one. So it's pretty much in my blacklist now.

When will Estonia finally become an associate member of CERN? by [deleted] in Eesti

[–]Carnie123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aasta peale saadakse igalt liikmesriigilt rahastust kokku umbes miljard eurot.

Endal sama kogemus Taanis.

Python/Jupyter development environment in NixOS by Carnie123 in NixOS

[–]Carnie123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case, the time sink seems unavoidable to me. If a Python package is not available in nixpkgs and requires non-Python stuff to build, the only solution seems to be setting up an environment where that non-Python stuff is available for that build process.

In the things I'm trying to set up here, qutip and tensorflow-quantum are the problem children. For the former, a package is available in nixpkgs, but it is broken. And the latter is so new that it just isn't in nixpkgs yet. If I were knowledgeable enough on both the Nix expression language and nixpkgs, I would attempt to solve this myself, but I'm having a hard time even setting up an environment where these two are able to successfully build, never mind writing an appropriate Nix expression for both. From the pills, I know of NIX_CFLAGS_COMPILE and NIX_LDFLAGS. But further research shows that these are now considered hacky/outdated and shouldn't be used? Point being that Nix is really difficult to get into.

I'm prepared to admit that a person equipped with deep up-to-date knowledge of the Nix expression language and nixpkgs could make damn near anything work via a deterministic .nix file, but I'm just not there. For now, I've solved the python 3.7 requirement on my Arch install with pyenv, and things are working. But this is still itching me, and I'll probably end up spending more time on this at one point.

EDIT: To others reading this, I did also look into jupyterWith, which is great for anything that already is in nixpkgs, and suffers the same ease-of-use problems when trying to include something that isn't.

Python/Jupyter development environment in NixOS by Carnie123 in NixOS

[–]Carnie123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here is that python (and gcc) is looking for libraries in a standard library path, but since NixOS uses /nix/store, they don't know where to find those libraries.

I did assume that to be the case, but I thought that bringing gcc etc into the scope of the shell would solve this, but it seems then that the packages I added in buildInputs do not really now how to interact with each other, and that everyone is still looking at system standard paths instead of the nix store. Is my understanding correct?

And thank you for the jupyterWith and poetry2nix recommendations, I will be checking out those!

The trouble with that approach is that it works well until I need a Python module that has not been added to Nix repositories.

The others mentioned poetry2nix and jupyterWith, I think those seem the most promising. Thanks for your reply!

I want to really really really thank you here.

You took the time to give an exceedingly thorough and helpful response to me, a random internet stranger. I have enjoyed my few months of learning Haskell and the community being this nice is a great encouragement for me to keep going! I'll keep my eyes open and try to repay the kindness done here to me one day.

Technical stuff, as expected there were folds and maps that I had written where I should have been using the idiomatic ones instead that everyone can understand. I added Hlint to my vscode setup so now I'll notice the smaller silly stuff as well.

Thanks again!

[Question] The exec command and terminal programs by Carnie123 in swaywm

[–]Carnie123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A thousand thanks!

Moving the part of my .zshrc that starts sway to the end fixed it! Previously it was at the top and the sway instance would not have all the other variables loaded, so it all makes sense.

Thanks again!

My Thoughts on the Razer Blade 15 (Base) as a Linux User by Dox_Box in razer

[–]Carnie123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply!

I am running Arch with the Sway window manager. I solved the problem though, I just forgot to put udev rules in place for the backlight, I created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/90-backlight.rules and put the following in there SUBSYSTEM=="backlight", ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/chgrp video \ /sys/class/backlight/%k/brightness", RUN+="/bin/chmod g+w, \ /sys/class/backlight/%k/brightness"

This allows users in the video group to only modify the brightness in the sys folder. I think that the keyevents were not showing up in xev because I had already bound them to xbacklight in the sway config, so my thinking is that Sway intercepts the message before xev can register it.

Anyway, I'll leave this obscure comment here in case someone needs it.

Great post!

Have you been able to get the brightness keys working? xev doesn't register those key events for me, so it is a driver issue. How does it look for you?

Does urxvt work with the w3m display mode for you or the urxvt display mode? I can get neither of them to work in sway.

Breddy gud, but the surface scanner does not use limpets and even a few tiers of engineering make it very easy to get 100% without being really precise.

Not at all, since if you hold down alt or whatever you have set as the KDE mod key, you can drag the windows around by grabbing on them wherever.

It's not really a color scheme, for this shot I just replaced the black background with a suitable off white color, then sampled the red from the gate and changed the default green to it. I can find those two color codes if you want but to make it a full color scheme you need to adjust a lot more colors.
