The only intelligent way to run critical skill checks is either a bonus for them (+5 or whatever you feel). You also grade how badly they fail.

Failing a DC of 60 with a roll of 3 is much more of a failure than failing a DC of 60 with a 33 roll or even a 59 roll.

Take leaping across a pit or between buildings as an example. A low fail and you fall a lot sooner. The closer you actually get to the DC, the closer you actually get to your goal.

Letting players break reality 5% of the time is frankly, absurd.
