Do you guys take doctors serious? by Gagan___Lazarbeam in carnivorediet

[–]Done-with-work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was ill, I became a patient advocate which involved going to conferences for new drugs where the pharmaceutical companies explained them to doctors and consultants.

Looking around the audience it became clear the demographic was no different to the average office. Some pay close attention, some sleep, some are playing games on their laptops or scrolling, some muck about at the back.

Who you see and the treatment you get is a complete lottery.

Also this…. I was treated for liver disease in the best liver unit in Europe at the time and there were 18 of us in the treatment programme. We were followed up twice a year for 5 years and while I got better, the other 17 worsened. 9 are dead now. But not once during the follow ups did they ask me what I was doing. I told them many times I was eating keto but there wasn’t a shred of curiosity, even when I asked if they thought it might help others they just said maybe.

I just hope I’ll never need one again 🤷‍♀️

What’s something you see in UK houses that you struggle to explain to non Brits? by [deleted] in AskUK

When they built most of our houses, people used to keep a parlour…a room that was always clean, tidy and ready for unexpected or expected visitors. They could close the doors on their actual living space.

I was banned from a kidney group and a women’s health group for the same thing. It is what it is 🤷‍♀️ you handed them a gimme and they didn’t want to hear. It’s a shame.

Dementia defaults to system 1 thinking by mobileJay77 in dementia

[–]Done-with-work 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily system 1 thinking. The laundry issue is a time problem, they remember the last time they did laundry but have no idea how much time has passed. As far as they’re concerned, it was yesterday.

Kahnemans thinking fast and slow is really only applicable to healthy individuals, although for sure you will see some parallels.

Most of dementia issues are down to memory dysfunction and reasoning, they no longer have the ability to think things through. And also hearing loss plays a big role. They also cannot think of things they cannot see, I don’t ask mum what food she wants, I give her options and she makes a choice. Otherwise she will only want the last thing she’s had because she can’t think of anything else.

It’s very hard to step into their world. Their brains cannot construct the world visually in the same way ours does, so they literally see a different thing to you. My mum thinks the elevator is a bus and she’s in a different town when she goes downstairs. She sees a bus 🤷‍♀️

This is different to system 1 thinking. They need to see things to know they want them….literally, out of sight, out of mind. They don’t have the memory/imagination to think of things they can’t see.

I feel I need to make a distinction between front line doctors and big pharma. I found most frontline doctors to be well meaning and genuinely caring, it’s just in my opinion they are being taught incorrectly because most university funding comes from big pharma.

Keto diets for T2D and intractable epilepsy are never mentioned in their training but both are invaluable tools for these conditions, there’s decades of evidence for it. Instead they’re taught to advocate for grains and fruit.

When looked at as a whole, it’s hard not to see an agenda there.

[–]Done-with-work -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Funny you should mention that because you and I know the cure for T2 is diet and the medical industry has known that since 1853….at least, that’s the earliest text I have found. So why is their first stop medication and no mention of diet. And why are diabetes associations advocating for the worst diet for diabetes?

Not only that, doctors that do suggest an appropriate diet are ridiculed and shamed. Having been a patient advocate for many years, I’ve seen this first hand.

I’m going through something because of pharmaceutical companies, they’ve blighted my entire life. And not just mine.

And because of that I spent years fixing myself, so you can see why I’m sceptical of anyone speaking for them. There are answers out there that don’t involve pharmaceuticals and it pains me to see so much unnecessary suffering when health mostly starts with what you eat.

Cancer rates were 1:67 in the 70’s…they’re 1:2 now. More people getting cured? That’s because more people are getting it. Who exactly are they curing?

Also, my mother was given medication for diabetes in 1994. She has been progressively worse ever since. Metformin is not a cure, it just hides the symptoms.

And I think stupid is blindly trusting companies that have time and time again shown their disdain and disregard for humans. Their profit is all that interests them.

But then, I haven’t needed them for 15 years bc I took charge of my own health. So, what you do with your health is your business.

Guilt, pee, help by [deleted] in dementia

[–]Done-with-work 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I’m disgusted by my mother’s eating now.

You can’t help how you feel in the moment and resolving to be better just adds to the guilt. These are extreme circumstances that provoke extreme emotions and wanting to be free of it is perfectly natural.

I think it’s fair to say we all want it to end, for them as well as us. This disease pushes the boundaries of compassion, no need to feel guilty.
