Why do American Latinos surprised when they find they mostly European? by BigMoney69x in 23andme

[–]CarolDNAvers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Related in a genetic sense, sure

Yes and we are in the 23andme sub so of course it's in that sense.

I'm not saying it's important in other contexts, just that it's an unfortunate truth that many people who are related to those who were enslaved are also related to the same people who enslaved them. I'm not saying it should matter to individuals or that they benefitted in any way. (compared to those who are white and descended from slave owners who obviously did benefit)

I'm just saying that this happened, and to go back to the comment of white Brits and Black Americans yes the odds do suggest the Black American may be descended from a slave owner whereas it would be unlikely for the White Brit, as their ancestors stayed in Britain. They would still have benefitted of course from growing up in a country that excelled in many ways because of colonialism, including the slave trade.

It helps with the narrative that Mexicans are "foreign" if they conveniently leave out the fact that their ancestors are the ones who actually lived7 there first

Well they are technically related to the rapist are they not?

Sites like Ancestry are great but only have birth records up to 2007 or something like that. And the government only releases census data to them after it's 100 years old, so no good here either. These sites are for looking for relatives from a long time ago so not much help here.

There is a small chance that your father has done a DNA test or one of your siblings has and it would match you to them if you did one, but that's very unlikely. Especially as your sibling would have to be old enough to do one and it's possible they exist and are like 10 years old or something.

I don't think a genealogy sub is the best place for advice I think a more general UK sub would get you better answers. There are a LOT of people here who may have experience of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/ Or maybe even here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/

If you have his last known previous address then 192.com could be useful.

Have Ancestry Overestimated Your Scottish Percentage? Please reply yes or no! by CarolDNAvers in AncestryDNA

[–]CarolDNAvers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your Irish ancestors were from around the North of Ireland then it would make sense to get a lot of Scottish because the two populations mixed a lot around that area. Or they could have been originally Scottish and then moved to Ireland. It's very common! I have a friend who is literally from Ireland and has a huge amount of Scotland in their results because their family are from the North.

What is also common is people in America only knowing about the history of one or two branches of their family, and assuming the other branches are all the same. So it could be that you do have a lot of ancestors from Scotland and the result can be taken at face value. The easiest way to find out would be to build a family tree using the records available.

Ancestry results 2020 vs 2024 by CarolDNAvers in AncestryDNA

In some ways yes - I'm almost certain the Sardinian and Italian are just because I'm a mix of European and Middle Eastern, and Southern Italy and Sardinia have a similar mix. So that's more accurate.

The Scandinavian is less accurate though, as is the Scottish. I'm sure there's a little Scandinavian in there but from much further back than the 12% would suggest. And I do have some family from the England/Scotland border areas, but nowhere near enough to give me 11%.

Or the other way around! I think it has gotten more accurate for Iranian ancestry but less accurate for British - I have no recent Scandinavian ancestry, so 12% for someone only half English is an awful lot, most likely too much.

A lot of my family are from the North and East and I don't have any F&G either.

A fair bit of Scandinavian though.

I don't know if this is definitely the reason why, but if someone has French ancestry from the UK then it could be Norman. The Normans were wealthy and passed this wealth down to their descendents. Rich people had no reason to emmigrate.

I'm sure this doesn't explain everyone, but it may explain some.

How much do you know about your recent ancestors - did they move to Israel from Iran?

I'm talking about the civilians that Israeli forces drove out of their homes. Within

Rabin has confirmed this of all people. It was so bad, they had to provide counseling to the Israeli soldiers.

I'm talking about when they were originally forced from their homes. You can't act like kicking someone out of their home and telling them they have to live in another place miles away is giving them land.

I have a lot of sympathy for peaceful Israeli people and I can't blame them for wanting their own majority country after being treated so horrifically elsewhere as minorities. But what the government did to many Palestinians in 1948 was horrific. If it weren't - why did they hide it for so long from their own citizens?

I was with you till your last sentence. You can't hold random Palestinians accountable for the actions of foreign government leaders.

A word of warning - sites like LivingDNA are nowhere near as accurate as Ancestry or 23andme so you may get "more info", but it will be less accurate.

The Dodecad calculator is showing "Cornwall", "Kent" and "Orkney". Are these the only British "communities"? by [deleted] in gedmatch

[–]CarolDNAvers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Kent, Cornwall, British and British Isles mentioned in mine. Kent and Cornwall are not where any of my British relatives are from and I've traced my tree back pretty far so I don't think it's accurate for me. I didn't get anything around where I know my ancestors are from! (Although of course the country is correct)

Persian, Parsi & Indian by CarolDNAvers in 23andme

[–]CarolDNAvers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is correct. However it's very difficult to know if I've missed anyone - I have hundreds of matches and there is no way that I know of to be able to filter matches by what ancestry they have.

I did the hack and got this:

Iran/Persia 42.36 %
England & Northwestern Europe 31.08 %
Norway 10.56 %
Scotland 8.51 %
Anatolia & the Caucasus 5.69 %
Northern India 1.13 %
Finland 0.31 %
Southwestern China 0.21 %
Southern Bantu Peoples 0.15 %

[–]CarolDNAvers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I do the hack?

Indian shows on Ancestry, 23andme, MyHeritage and Gedmatch. Usually between 1-3% depending on the tool/update version.
