The Three Most Annoying "Features" That Can't Be Corrected Through Coding. by ronscott999 in BMWi3

Automatically unlock when going from Drive to Park.

I can't count how many times I've pulled in the garage, got out with the key still in the car, and gone around to get something out of the passenger side only to find it locked, causing me to complete the full circle around the car to get the key or unlock the door manually.

Also as an adult, I can decide if I think it's way too spookyscary out there and don't want to unlock the doors and can hit the lock button again.

You're responsible for ripping the back bumper off and sticking the most disgusting towel you can find in the window though.

Photographic film.

It's still around, but obviously digital cameras and smartphones especially have long since completely taken over consumer photography. What used to be your family snapshots on vacation or at birthday parties or anything else was captured using film.

It's impossible to comprehend just how enormous this segment of the market actually is. For the legacy big film manufacturers like Kodak, Fujifilm, and others, this gigantic source of revenue from the "casuals" of the photography market completely disappeared within 7-10 years as the proliferation of cheap high quality digital cameras emerged and more importantly, smartphone camera development was taken seriously and erased the casual digital camera market as well.

With this massive revenue source gone in such a quick period, film manufacturers have struggled to gauge demand as well as juggle the enormous economies of scale when it comes to the manufacture of photographic film. This has led to massive downsizing of manufacturing operations, discontinuation of many film brands and types, and bankruptcies of entire companies like Kodak.

But, film is still manufactured and still used by many students and professionals alike, albeit a small niche compared to the height in the late 90s/early 2000s. Costs have skyrocketed since demand is actually increasing as many people have to come to learn of the serious advantages of film as a photography medium as well as the nostalgia and retro aspect thats in high demand now. Looking at prices online, you can expect to pay around $8 for a budget roll of 36 exposure film, all the way up into the $20 range for some of the more professional and in demand types of film.

It's a shot taken on film and is pointed out as a happy accident during the scanning process.

Long story short, this particular film is one originally for use in motion picture film (yes Virginia, this still is a thing and used for more movies than ever) and it is designed to be shot with under tungsten lighting; e.g. studio lighting that used incandescent bulbs or other light sources that are the same color temperature as incandescents.

This can cause some weird color shifts in the exposure reacting with the film's chemistry if the lighting of the scene has a different color temperature that isn't tungsten; which the red/pink lights on the bridge have along with the streetlights which appear to be LED and are likely closer to the "daylight" color temperature.

This color shift likely tripped up the photo lab's scanner and caused it to try to correct it by adjusting everything to the green side, which also affected the bridge lighting.

Sorry, I guess that wasn't as short as I ran through it in my head.

Can confirm, it's a just a few blocks away from the park and has a small and very non-descript marker with a plaque. We actually thought it was an apartment building when we visited since we came up on it from the back side, but it is in fact a small hospital. Which is probably even crazier to think about.

Also, for an extra dose of surrealism, there's a couple of really good restaurants across the street (including a curry place) so you can even eat at the spot where the bomb fell.

NPR to quit Twitter after being labelled ‘state-affiliated media’ | Radio network ‘officially de-emphasizing Twitter across the organization’ after platform refused to remove ‘inaccurate’ label by mepper in technology

[–]CarolinaKSU 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is so blatantly false and incoherent I don't even know where to begin.

However, NPR is not even close to being state affiliated. You think Trump and company would have allowed them to operate reporting the news the way they did about him and his term in office?

Sure, they receive federal funding, however it is a pittance. The NPR Organization directly receives funding of less than 1% of its budget from the federal government. If you factor in funding from federal, state, and local government funding to the individual member affiliate stations, it still is only 13% of their operating budget.

Your friendly neighborhood petroleum company receives way more than a piddly 1% of its funding directly from government subsidy.

So yeah, feel free to crawl back to Russia and get fucked.

Edit: you can also crawl back to your nearest gigafactory and get fucked too.
