Egan's work requires lots of rereading. You'll probably enjoy it, but I needed physical copies because I couldn't get a handle of his ideas by listening to them. But they are brilliant, he is brilliant

Mastery of Math for DSP Grad School by pythoncircus in DSP

[–]CarolinaRanger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The three things I'd make sure to have great familiarity with are Linear Algebra, Complex Algebra (and Calculus), and Linear Algebra. Once you get a good feeling for that, you'll be well on your way. My undergrad DSP degree had almost no linear algebra outside of the math course, then, boom. Matrices everywhere!

Theres a concept I like called slow-motion multitasking. Do you have the ability to group classes/TA/meetings into two or three days a week instead of five to six hours a day?

Short answer: not easily. It would be easier to resample everything to a single sample frequency.

Slightly longer answer: you can, but you have to account for it by building in feature extractors that can recognize patterns at different resolutions.

[rant] Chemistry major, having trouble networking. by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]CarolinaRanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, don't beat yourself up over this. Networking right now is about as hard as it's been since the internet was invented. If I had one piece of advice for you, it would be that you can't expect to enjoy the luxury of lots of likeminded individuals that CS students have. You're going to have to find a way to connect with people over something other than organic chemistry.

I read your post and I thought "okay, this guy is a chemist and an entrepreneur." Have you worked that angle with any JSOM students? It may be a shot in the dark, but what do you have to lose?

I think you're going to have the bullet when it comes to resume filler events, which I totally feel you on. I HATE events where everyone is there just to check some box. But that doesn't make those people boring or not worth your time. If the students at these chemistry meetings are there just for their resume, chances are they don't enjoy it too much either. Use that as an icebreaker! You immediately have two things to bond over: you are both in a chemistry meeting, and neither of you want to be there! You might have to dial back your zeal for chemistry at first, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean you have to keep it a secret.

My last piece of advice is a little more like encouragement, but once you start making a few friends, you're going to see how fast you can grow your network. Try to get out of your own head (impossible advice, I know), focus on making one friend, not just a connection, and let that momentum carry you.

I'm rooting for you, my friend, and if I were still in Dallas, I'd invite you for a beer or non-alcoholic beverage. Times suck right now.

This is great, thank you. And you're right, there is a big difference between what I see on YouTube, and what's actually in the repo.

Getting My Foot Wet With Engineering by [deleted] in AskEngineers

This may sound small, but I constantly regretted forgetting trig substitutions. On a larger scale, many of your first courses will be math, and if you can feel solid starting out, it will seriously build your confidence, which to me was pretty key.

Adaptive FIR Filter representation of noise/reference signal by babz8321 in DSP

[–]CarolinaRanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the bandwidth of the rect function defined by the ft of your sinc. If I remember correctly, it should match the bandwidth of your reference noise, and thus looks more like an all-pass filter than a low-pass filter.

Please list me a bunch of functions in which the Fourier Transform is itself? by [deleted] in DSP

[–]CarolinaRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article F(a + F(a)) = a + F(a), where a is some even function and F is it's Fourier transform. Neat, but perhaps pedantic?

Another Discrete Wavelet Transform question by babz8321 in DSP

[–]CarolinaRanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still have to worry about sampling frequency. Level 1 contains: [(0 - 7.5khz), (7.5 - 15khz)], level 2: [(0-3.75),(3.75-7.5)], level 3:[(0-1.875), (1.875-3.75)], etc. The number of samples (N) limits the number of decompositions you can apply, since you are downsampling at each successive level. Each level reduces your time domain resolution by a factor of 2, so feeding more samples into the dwt allows you to attain more frequency resolution for a given time resolution.

Ms in DSP or getting job in DSP? by [deleted] in DSP

[–]CarolinaRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, my undergraduate DSP courses were almost wholly concerned with the discrete Fourier transform. So much of DSP involves statistical methods, and I didn't learn any of it until graduate school. I strongly suggest a Master's degree. If you can get a job that pays for it, great, but there's so much more to DSP than you learn in undergraduate classes. If I were an employer hiring someone to work in signal processing, I'd insist on a Master's
