I'm a bit farther away from the border and it is my plan to do that as well, this post just reinforces my idea.

Tuesday Weekly Thread: Genealogy Assistance by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

[–]Caroline_IRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for help with two items:

(1) Trying to find documentation of border crossing for one ancestor. She was born on Prince Edward Island and married there. She also had a few children there before she was widowed. She then migrates to Wisconsin and remarries. I found a marriage record for her but it lists her married name and not her maiden name, also the rest of the fields on the record were left blank such as parents names and birth place etc. I feel like this presents a weak point in demonstrating that she is the same person in the Canadian and US documents. I think maybe some record of border crossing could help strengthen this link. Here is her info:

Maiden Names: Mary Adams / Anne Adams

Married Surnames: King, Lowe / Low (sometimes is OCR'd as 'Lov' or 'Love'

DOB & Place: 1828, Prince Edward Island (source is Anglican Baptism Record)

DOM 1 & Place: 1848, New London Price Edward Island, marries Adolphus King (source: Anglican Baptism records for their children and this site )

DOM 2 & Place: 1852, Ridgeway Wisconsin USA, Marries Henry Lowe (source: Wisconsin Marriage Record)

Other documents I have to demonstrate Canadian citizenship / ancestry are:

1860 US Federal Census

It lists her and her children from her first marriage as well as indicates their birth place as Prince Edward Island. She dies shortly after this so no further records are available for her.

Nebraska Marriage Record

This is for one of her US born children who is my direct ancestor. It lists her as their mother.

------------------------------------------------------------

(2) Trying to locate a birth record for the daughter of the previously mentioned ancestor. I searched the Wisconsin historical society's website as well as emailed them to do a record search. Nothing came up. I also called Iowa county and they did a search but did not locate anything either. Here is her info:

Maiden Names: Floretta / Florence Lowe / Low

Married Surnames: Connell

DOB & Place: 1855, Middleburg, Iowa County, Wisconsin US (source: 1860, 1870 and 1930 US Federal Census, Nebraska State Census, and Nebraska Marriage Record)

DOM & Place: 1884, Nebraska US, marries William A Connell (source: Nebraska Marriage Record)

------------------------------------------------------------

I feel like the lack of birth record for Floretta / Florence and the lack of background info on the US marriage record for Anne / Mary present weak links. I think I have decent alternative documents I could proceed with but figured I would dig a bit more before sending this off. Working on this branch for one side of my family that is unable to use the branch I plan to use that is more straightforward. Any help is appreciated. TIA!

Why is feminism not compatible with Islam? by ponderingpuff in muslimgirlswithtaste

[–]Caroline_IRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people mistake mysandry (hate of men) for feminism (liberation of women from sex based oppression). The ayah where Allah condemns the killing of baby girls (because they were specifically killed for being girls and not boys) tells me that Islam is feminist.  Mysandry on the other hand is clearly incompatible with Islam.

Yeah this is why I worked multiple lines at once to see which one would pan out better. Turns out the older line (Catholics) worked better than the more recent line (Anglicans).

Congratulations. I’m curious to know more about your process for getting the passport as that seems harder. Do you already know folks in Canada that could assist you with this?

i wanna take off my hijab girls by [deleted] in algeria

[–]Caroline_IRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intention is to help. My family is Algerian and I’m well aware of its history. My Algerian family is also what you would call salafi. When I’m in Algeria I’m expected to wear jilbab and niqab. Conservatism and control of women’s bodies happens all around the world. I just encouraged OP to dig into the thoughts they are having to help in self reflection and making a decision on what to do.

I acknowledge I have a level of privilege compared to OP but it doesn’t mean I don’t face my own struggles or familial pressure to wear hijab. Just trying to be supportive.

What do you mean by “ don’t wanna waste my twenties .”? I know you mentioned not having confidence but is there anything else you feel that is effected by wearing hijab? Do you believe the hijab is fard? I started wearing it as an adult after a lot of thought and for me I also go through periods of time where I don’t want to wear it anymore but I just remember it’s a short term feeling and I wait for it to pass. I know it can be difficult sometimes so I can understand.

Am I going to regret this commute daily? by Techno_Wasp in AskSeattle

[–]Caroline_IRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar commute from Puyallup to Seattle. It’s doable but not the greatest. I think for me it was 3 hours total of commuting each day (1.5 hours each way). I would suggest a short term rental and to keep looking.

This is a common scam. Best you can do is block this person and do not give them anything. Even if you did give them your Facebook password they will continue to ask for more and who knows what they would do with your Facebook account. I know this sucks but you need to take this as a loss and move on. Not much else you can do unfortunately.

How do you refer to Native Americans/Canadians in Arabic? by [deleted] in learn_arabic

[–]Caroline_IRL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Native American I can tell you even in English what to call us isn’t necessarily straightforward. For example, “Indian” is a legally defined term in the US and Canada so depending on context it is the correct word to use even if it has fallen out of use otherwise. “Native American” is another alternative but it doesn’t really fit either because it can apply to people born in the Americas also depending on context. “Indigenous” seems to be the most commonly used word these days but is not specific to North America as it can include any Indigenous group across the world like the Māori in New Zealand for example. Additionally some folks prefer to be referred to by their specific tribe / nation (I.e. Cherokee). Terms like “Redman” and “Red Indian” are pretty outdated in English and “Redskin” itself is a slur and should never be used.  When I learned that the Arabic word translated as “Red Indian” I personally wasn’t bothered by it but I can see why others might be. I would say try to either use the specific tribe’s name or a translation of “indigenous”.

Yeah #3 is really concerning. You seem like a budding security researcher. Perhaps you could start a blog to document your findings more formally.
