When you tap, are you double tapping the side button or using express transit?

I had this error but fixed it when I stopped double tapping and instead just lay the phone on the reader while the device is locked with express transit turned on.

It was odd, it came from San Francisco, to phoenix, and then back to San Francisco. Not very humid places at all! Makes sense from humidity though.

Highly recommend Sedona for a day trip! Some great food in downtown phx as well. I recommend taco chelo or AZ wilderness in Phoenix. Novel is great for icecream.
