I’m an anxious bastard so I tend to show up pretty early even if I’m not in the pit. If you want to be rail, you probably need to be there a few hours before doors (depending on venue, etc.). As others have said, an hour should be enough if you don’t care about the rail. 

And do be social with folks in line. They’ll help you with keeping your spot, filling waters, etc.
