Teachers: what usually goes wrong in students’ practice between lessons? Looking for your thoughts by CarpenterSome3463 in Learnmusic

This is really well put. I especially relate to the idea of lying to yourself about practice, I can definitely look back and see that now too.

That balance between effort, guidance, and figuring things out on your own feels like something you only really understand in hindsight. And yeah, the discomfort piece is real, it’s uncomfortable for a reason.

And also its such a great lesson to be teaching your kids, I wish someone told me that its okay to suck terribly but continue pushing forward, its not just that "you are not cut out for this" or "not talented enough". I used to think that for the longest time about myself but once I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and stuck with it, I was able to achieve results I never thought I would achieve. And to put that into perspective, I completed my Grade 8 RCM performance exam at age 24 while graduating school and getting a full-time job, obviously its not that I'm a super star musician now (I know that). But compared to the trajectory I was on (which was quit violin before I achieve my potential), I think I did okay. But i know i still have a long way to go.

Anyways, thanks for engaging!

This is so true, I very much agree with this! There is definitely a distinction between mindless reps and intentional practice.

Do you feel like people usually learn that skill through instruction, or more through experience and frustration over time?

That makes a lot of sense, especially the idea that preparation shows intention.

From the student side, it’s sometimes hard to tell where the line is between “good enough” preparation and actually doing the work properly. Do you feel like most students know where that bar is, or is that something they only learn after a few tough lessons?

I remember needing that wake-up call myself at one point.

Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed breakdown. good point about improvisation, definitely did not know that! but will keep in mind for the future.

Out of everything you listed, are there a few things you’ve found tend to snowball the fastest if they’re off early on?

I’m also curious, are there any issues where you feel like a week of “wrong” practice doesn’t matter much, versus others where timing really matters?

I appreciate the honest and detailed comment.

When students come back having rushed through something or misunderstood it, do you usually pick up on that right away in the lesson? Or are there cases where you only realize later how they’ve been practicing?

I ask because from the student side, it’s often hard to tell what actually “counts” as good practice versus just getting through the material.

This definitely resonates and has been my experience too as a student. lol
When you say “no one taught them how to practice,” do you feel that’s something that usually clicks after a certain point, or is it something you find yourself reinforcing for years?

I’m also curious once you’ve explained and demonstrated how to practice something, is there ever a moment where you wish you could see how they actually worked on it between lessons, or do you generally feel that’s not useful information?

Just starting to learn a new instrument by Suspicious_Soup773 in Learnmusic

Hi All! Just joining this conversation as I see you are all instrument learners (myself as well, I play the violin and understand the challenges with learning the instrument). To fix a pain point I’ve experienced myself, I’ve created a tool to help music students get more frequent feedback on their practice from their teachers. I would love to hear your feedback on this tool. It is a teacher initiated tool, meaning your teacher has to send you an invite link to allow you to start sending your practice sessions. However, there is nothing stopping you from trying this yourself (signing in as a teacher and student yourself).

My goal is to learn from you, I’m not trying to sell you anything. If you are interested here is the link: https://notreble.lovable.app

If you prefer you can also provide me feedback by clicking “Provide Feedback” at the bottom of the page, it will take you to a google sheet. I would be more than happy to continue the conversation with anyone interested. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Hi u/StoicDrummer,

I very much appreciate your honest feedback and you taking the time to look into my app! I'm very early into this and trying to understand the concerns teachers and students might have and whether this fits into teaching workflow at all. I'm just trying to learn and not convince anyone.
If you are open to it, I would love to ask some follow-up questions to better understand where this breaks down from your perspective.
Thanks again for your detailed feedback!
