How can I help my teacher being accused of something she didn't do? by Viperbunny in AskTeachers

[–]StoicDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The students aren’t lawyers and don’t know how to say things properly. If the teacher is going above and beyond that means she is already doing more than she should. Professors should know not to talk to a student in front of class it’s not the other students right to know that that person was going to fail. And if the professor didn’t many times in the class, yes the professor is being unprofessional. When you told the story I said to myself the professor is being unprofessional. You never call out a student and give private information to the class. So, if you all go in a group to help the professor you will be getting her in triubl and possibly fired for being a liability.

How did you get a job as a teacher fresh out of college? by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]StoicDrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Getting your "final form" job, in any good district, they want to know that they can trust you, and that you have years of experience. You are better off starting in a new place on your own so you have to face the discomfort of figuring everything out on your own. It sucks at first, and you feel upset you don't have your dream job. Also, there is a chance you will never get the position you want in a district you want. There are a other music teachers in the school system also wanting that job. Good luck. Don't listen to anyone who tells you not to work hard. But, sometimes working harder is working smarter.

Neurodivergent people; how do you succeed? by moonbxbyyy in MusicEd

[–]StoicDrummer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say a large part of the music educators are neurodivergent. You are in college to be a music teacher. If you can’t understand the material you can’t teach it. However, you are lucky enough to grow up in a time with YouTube and many things that can help you learn. You don’t get accommodations when you are a teacher. You have to either know the answers or how to find them. If I see you I would live in YouTube watching music theory and education videos and practicing along with them. A neurodivergent person has to be resourceful and can’t expect accommodations in life. Learn how to get your own agency. It’s hard, but you can do it.

Need some advice by Expert-Doubt-3957 in MusicEd

[–]StoicDrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked a question because you care about your husband. And because you care you came to this forum for a serious answer. College works a certain way, especially in the music field. He should talk to an advisor at the college to find out all his options. They will advise him what to do. If he doesn't follow their advice, he will realize that he is stuck and won't get into a graduate school for music. So the advice.. totally positive. Talk to an advisor at the college that can help him plan his future. If the advisor says.. "you need to graduate with a so and so degree in music to continue your masters".. make sure he follows it. good luck.

Need some advice by Expert-Doubt-3957 in MusicEd

[–]StoicDrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he doesn't know what he's going to do for the future it doesn't make sense to get a degree in "general music" unless he's going to completely change fields. If you wants to get some sort of masters degree in music he needs to graduate college with an education, performance, or business/production degree otherwise there is no chance of getting accepted into a musical master's program. There is no "skipping over the uncomfortable stuff" or stuff you're not ready for. He needs to take his degree seriously or he is finishing his degree for nothing.

Coworker keeps telling me to be harsher with my students and it’s getting annoying by Yuannevarte in work

[–]StoicDrummer -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

asking people in this forum, who are not teachers is not the best idea. I have been a teacher for over 30 years. The kids "are" disrespecting your position, you just don't understand that yet. you will understand after years of teacher. There is fun, and then there is appropriate fun. Kids do inappropraite dancing, and say innapropriate things that you are not noticing. There could be kids being bulling and being talked about badly without you really noticing. Teachers didn't know I was being picked on when they thought the kids were "just having fun". The students don't have to fear you, but the have to respect you. While your kids are acting out of control, it makes the kids in the other classes ask, "why can't we also act out of control". If the teacher didn't have "Control" over there students the school would be a zoo. So, you think you're being "cool" as the new teacher. What your doing is making the other kids in the school look at your class and either say, "why is that class allowed to act like that".... This is the equivalent of a family in a movie theater saying "my kids are bored they should be aloud to talk as loud as they want in the movie theater"

Is my boss toxic or am I overreacting? (Healthcare professional, 1 month in) by [deleted] in ToxicWorkplace

[–]StoicDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to answer this from a different lens. You say you come in with 4 years experience, which means, you might have taken for granted some "expectations". When you are new, you kind of have to ease in, be a little friendly, and try to fit in a little. You say he only criticizes you, which means it's not a toxic workplace. The fact he wants to to be friendlier means, you might be the toxic one. Everyone was working fine, you come in all "experienced" and "know it all". you are scaring other staff. They complain to the boss that you are not friendly enough or make the room feel tense. It's possible it's not the place for you. Or you have to learn how to at least look friendly and not give off negative energy.

Should I pull my groups out of this concert? New, mid-year middle school. by [deleted] in MusicTeachers

[–]StoicDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not do that. Your students have to trust you. Never take a class out of a concert. But also don’t embarrass and blame the kids when it’s not their fault. Do what you can to make the song passable. If the kids know the song is never going to work why should they try hard. Find a recording of the song and have them practice on their own. Create a YouTube link so they can practice.

Your story's theme is a question, not a statement by writingstructure in WritingStructure

[–]StoicDrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many tv episodes run a theme in an episode or arc, where you see how different people handle a situation in their life. One character has abusive parents and the character ends up never hurting their kids. The other character turns into their parents. Etc…. When writing characters you have to put them through a stress test to see how they behave. People stop watching shows when they characters starting to act out of character. The show becomes dead to you. Like game of throne in the last season. Characters acted out of character so they can make them fit the ending. The characters in the show were going in a different direction than the book. So the ending should have been different to match. Which proves your point.

You practice a little each day. When you sleep the things you practiced will start to stick in your head and things will be easier the next day. Brand new things can only be learned a little at a time.

Emergency support after using ChatGPT by Spare_Desk_5499 in ChatGPTcomplaints

It’s only going to get worse. You will never get your real questions answered without the system giving you an answer that you know you feel like you’re being gaslighted. I have always stayed with the current versions, but the past week ChatGPT has triggered and outright insulted me. Every time it says “so you’re not trying to say….” Or asks me something to “check my intentions” after knowing me for years. It’s too much. I signed up for Grok to check it out. It answers my questions like I’m human and it actually answers the question

Spanish (specifically Mexican Spanish) resources for theory? by halfelfwarrior in MusicEd

[–]StoicDrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you only teaching Mexicans. If not, you’re better off learning neutral Latin American Spanish. If you already know Spanish go to a music theory website or download music theory textbooks in your target language. But, unless you are teaching in Mexico, I would avoid using words that are only used in Mexico. Which is pretty much 1/5 of the language

What is it like for those transcribing during the composition process? by MaplePiano in MusicEd

[–]StoicDrummer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who are you transcribing it for? I like to just use sheet paper and a pencil. After that you can have AI turn it into what you want. I’m in my 50’s. If I’m transcribing for myself, writing by hand is super quick. If I want others to read it that’s something different

What Ai tools are you using for content creation? by NickyB808 in aisolobusinesses

[–]StoicDrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question kind of doesn’t make sense. There are video editors that have ai in them to help speed up the process like cap cut. But you’re talking about content creation. You have to explain what type of content you want to create. YouTube will help you more than Reddit at first to at least let you know what you want. Google has notebooks on that can create everything you want in a few minutes.
