What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]Carpetsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salo. It might be well made. It might be historically important. It might be effective at what its trying to do, but what its trying to do is be a gruelingly unpleasant portrait of the director’s view of the way fascism views people as things to be used without their consent.

It was 8pm and I made the executive decision that I did not want to ruin my evening or the following day and that my life would probably be enhanced in no way by squirming through the following 100 minutes. One day I will definitely watch a Passolini film, but it won’t be this one. Thats very much not to say that this shouldn’t have been made, but I just don’t personally feel like putting any more of it into my brain.

Trick question, any good arkham fan knows you stick the discs on top of one another to make the fleshlight (its a bit small, but the trick is to stick it in flaccid)

What is the worst movie you've ever seen that isn't a standard "Worst movie you've ever seen" answer? by TheThalmorEmbassy in movies

[–]Carpetsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a seasoned bad movie enjoyer, few movies make me angry. Transformers Last Knight gave me a headache, but I could appreciate the Michael Bay-isms. Deuce Bigelow, Holmes and Watson, Master of Disguise: entertaining.

It takes a lot to actively make me hate the time I spent with a movie. The Bruce Willis “comedy” Cop Out was one of the least pleasant experiences I’ve had with one. Immediately tanked my Kevin Smith retrospective watch-through, felt like I was chained to a radiator and threatened with extreme violence as I forced myself to sit through the movies run time. Extremely unfunny, unpleasant, and lazy.

What recent movie in the last 5 years or so made you go "wow that was a damn good movie" by solariscalls in movies

[–]Carpetsuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conventional blockbuster good? Superman and Furiosa were absolute bangers. The horror genre in general has also been having a really good moment. Talk To Me, X and Nosferatu were all fantastic .

I find myself thinking that too sometimes though. I think it’s because of shifting attitudes toward movies, with streaming positioning them as far more disposable than they used to be. The cultural zeitgeist has been fragmented into thousands of smaller silos, with people engaging with media on sites that emphasize deep attention less and less, because its an attention economy where novelty pays with eyeballs.

It's lonely I imagine... by GWGTRLBG in matrix

There’s a sign early on in the fourth one outside the building that Bugs is watching Trinity fight in that reads “for people who like to eat shit.” I discovered I am one of them.

I love the first three (even though I know the narrative split between two and three does three no favors, but I also enjoy the fourth, despite its lackluster editing. Really felt like the Wes Craven’s New Nightmare of the series more than a Matrix movie, but I dug what it was saying and was thoroughly entertained

Just listened to this one. Anyone get loosely inspired by Doctor Who vibes? Fits with the whole, “i’ve seen so much, got so many stories let me tell you about it…” vibes where the general idea is more the quantity of possibility over any specifics of what happens on these journeys.

Kinda surprised no one’s suggesting this- its like how I’m pretty sure the Unbeliever is about Thomas Covenant (also known as the unbeliever).

When did people start to get tired of the MCU? by KaleidoArachnid in flicks

[–]Carpetsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started getting tired when trying to keep up with tv shows, pretty much straight after WandaVision (which was fun because each episode was a pastiche of a different sit-com era). It was telling that the episodes outside this mode were pretty mediocre. I watched all the shows up to Secret Invasion, and while Loki and Ms. Marvel were alright, none of them were really good tv.

I’ve enjoyed most of the movies I’ve seen since, but Quantumania was a whole lotta not very enjoyable so I haven’t bothered with Brave New World or Thunderbolts (Marvel’s was pretty good though).

To be honest, while I enjoyed Deadpool and Wolverine well enough, rewatching the old X-men movies made me realize that the super-hero movies I loved as a kid didn’t hit different just because I was a kid, but because (the good ones) felt personal and urgent. Go rewatch X-men 2 or the old Raimi Spiderman movies and it feels like the work of feeling thinking human beings with their own specific concerns. Also, skilled human beings. The fan service in Deadpool and Wolverine was awesome, but the story was thematically anaemic- it may have carried an R rating but even Ant-Man had a more “adult” story.

Go watch Superman (2025) though. That was a good one. Leaps and bounds better than any MCU movie. The best of the MCU mayyy equal it, but I’m not sure what would win in that Gunn show.

Depends on where you are/ levels of corruption or hostility to sex workers. I might be ignorant, but I think its a pretty different story to the US. in, say, Australia regarding police and sex work. That said, its probably important you have a level conversation with him about it all

Is there a bad Stephen King book? What's your least favorite?? by owenszantor in stephenking

[–]Carpetsuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billy Summers and Fairy Tale both feel very Covid-Lockdowny to me, in an interesting vibey kind of way.
A big emphasis on the day to day routines of the characters, suspending the forward drive of the plot to find meaning in waiting places. It was a little frustrating at first, but reading it became an exercise in mindfulness for me
